Examples of school policies stating trans people allowed to use opposite sex spaces

Hi all
I recently saw a post this week where someone posted a school policy where it stated a male pupil identifying as a girl should be allowed to change with girls, and if any girls feel uncomfortable, then it is the girl who must be removed. But I can’t locate the thread this policy was on.

I am looking for examples of such policies in school, colleges and universities so I can raise this issue with my community and social media groups I’m on. Thanks in advance.

It looks like lots of these policies have the same wording. Teachers are busy, copy and paste existing policies saves writing your own. Does anyone know where it originated?

I think a useful question to ask is "why are there single sex facilities in the first place?" If there is legitimate reason to exclude males from a female space then there is also a legitimate reason to exclude males who identify as female.

@Whatdidisay

As sex is a protected category under the equality act and GI is not, surely it is against the law to banish a girl from the girls changing areas/toilet instead of the male boded child? Why is it suggested that the complaining child/parent needs re educating and gaslit in to believing that just because they are male bodied they are a girl in all other respects?
Yes it is. The was why the Oxford trans policy was considered likely to be illegal and the complainant was granted the right to judicial review (and then Oxford pued the guidelines)
Whatsnewpussyhat · 12/06/2021 19:12

There has to be a legitimate purpose for excluding the trans individual. For example. an open changing room where everyone is naked in front of each other. Which is rare in this day and age at schools

A legitimate purpose is to uphold the sex based protections of the female pupils for their safety, privacy and dignity. The exemptions can, and should, be applied.
Female pupils should not have their boundaries forcibly removed to appease any male pupil. Basic safeguarding. Unfortunately most have been Stonewalled into believing they must let the male pupil in.

Gender identity IS NOT a protected characteristic. Sex is.

Toilets and changing rooms in schools should be separated by sex.
Gender is irrelevant. Female facilities are for females not anyone who performs femininity.

The Crown Prosecution Service had some particularly anti female guidelines for schools stating just this - with the addition of some intimidating commentary about it being a hate crime for girls to raise any objections to the presence of a male self identifying as a female when they are undressing for activities like swimming. They withdrew it rather than allow it to be subject to legal scrutiny but the link is an analysis of it from Sarah Phillimore:

I can see many girls.identifying as non binary just to get this special privilege. No girls like changing in front of the others. That solution will only work until they have to deal with en masse non binary.

It wouldnt let me quote it properly, but as far as I can see it is neither only to get this privilege nor has it been a big influx of girls insisting on private changing spaces, but tbh, if thats what a girl desperatly wanted - somewhere private to change for PE, then it would a damn shame if they had to go so far as to reject their gender in order to do so

How about we change the tradition of children getting naked in front of each other when so many find it very uncomfortable? Private cubicles for everyone.

Or do what they were originally doing to be covid compliant, which was allowing kids to go in to school in their PE kit on PE days. Both my kids preferred this and saved loads of time
thirdfiddle · 13/06/2021 15:50

I have an email from school stating that as their policy. They don't put it in writing on their website, perhaps because they know it will generate outrage. I don't know if it may be individual cubicles, DS is y7 so they've been doing the come in PE kit thing since he started.

Funding, space and safeguarding. Locked cubicles pose their own risks.
BilindaB · 13/06/2021 16:01

I didn't mention locks There are private cubicles in the lavatories, is that unsafe? Yes it would cost some money. Tax some billionaires.

BilindaB · 13/06/2021 16:07

And as a gym user, same there please. As one of the scare stories is the hypothetical male self-identifying as a female so they have access to seeing girls and women change, what's going on in the male changing rooms? Some male predators like looking at little boys genitals, what's stopping them from doing that right now, or if there are laws making trans people use the room that correlates with their birth sex? Nothing. Cubicles for privacy, cubicles to thwart creeps.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 13/06/2021 16:19

Cubicles sadly don't thwart creeps.

One example. There are more I'm sure.

Branleuse completely with you on going to school in PE kit. Would have saved my son hours and hours at primary school.
And remarkably this year (he's at secondary now) I have not had to replace a single piece of expensive branded PE kit because he can't lose it if it's on his body.

MouseyTheVampireSlayer · 13/06/2021 16:24

Cubicles for privacy don't work in schools. Even something like a curtain can create an illusion of privacy that could be used for drugs, self harm or abuse.
Teachers responsible for a class need to be able to check all is well. Toilets aren't the same as any child in the.loo for a long time is generally checked on. (Although most secondary schools have removed bag hooks now so they can't be used to hang themselves)
I imagine all gyms would need to considerably size up to accommodate what you envision.

Tibtom · 13/06/2021 17:01

A friend was talking about swimming lessons when she was a school 20 years ago. They were at a pool which still has a unisex changing room with cubicles. The boys would peer over the top or underneath. After the first lesson she always made up excuses not to go to swimming lessons and never learnt to swim.

BilindaB · 13/06/2021 17:33

I can think of countless ways to stop that being possible.
