Anyone from Ireland?

I posted on here not long ago asking for some pointers to help me understand the whole trans debate and I got some excellent references and links etc.

I'm Irish living in Ireland but spent a long time living and working in the UK, hence I feel quite at home on Mumsnet and other British sites which is great as I haven't really found anything comparable that's 'Irish'

I was delighted to read of Maya's victory today and registered with the sex-matters organisation but then started wondering if there's a similar group/movement in Ireland. I'm so upset to realise that our government have listed 'gender' as a protected characteristic rather than sex Sad I've been trying to find an Irish group that I could follow for more local information but am struggling to find one that is GC. The National Womens Council seemed like a good fit, I liked their manifesto which begins with the line "Feminism NWCI is a feminist organisation" until I got to the bottom line which reads "By ‘woman’ we refer to any person who identifies as a woman." Confused

So I find myself on here again, asking for pointers! Thanks Smile

Try The Countess (didn't fight for this).

Also LGB Alliance Ireland.

I'm not in Ireland but there have been threads in this before so I would recommend having a dig about and connecting with other MNers.

From threads and comments on FWR it looks like Irish Women's Lobby are worth following.

Their web site doesn't look like its been updated since their IWD event, but from all accounts it was great and videos availalbe irishwomenslobby.ie/speak-up-for-womens-rights/ (sorry there is new info on home page irishwomenslobby.ie/)

And also on facebook www.facebook.com/pg/IrishWomensLobby/posts/?ref=page_internal and twitter twitter.com/Irish_WL

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/06/2021 16:03

Thank you both, I will check them out and also do more digging on here later.

Women’s space Ireland
The Countess
Radicailini
Irish women’s lobby

DeeKavCoffee · 10/06/2021 17:46

There's very very few of us in comparison to UK but keep digging!!

FYI a lot of the LGB Alliance Ireland followers are Brits, which is disheartening

Surely it’s a similar proportion or percentage of the population in both countries?

FYI - DeeKavCoffee makes a lot of strange comments that don't seem to be consistent. I'm not sure what they mean when they say 'very few of us', as this implies they themselves are GC. On another thread they said that BeLongTo, a trans lobby group that supports transitioning for kids, do great work. I'd treat any of their comments with a small mountain of salt.

@Mermoose i heartedley apologize for not following the party line, i mustn't have got the memo, but BeLonGTo have done great work and their bullying campaigns have been excellent for LGB students around the country. i'm not for targetting and disbanding every lgbt charity that lobbies for trans things. i'm not going to sacrifice lgb rights and continued effort on that just for quick wins against the trans lobby.

anyone can see that the LGBT Alliance Ireland page is followed by a lot of bots and Brits, which i guess is fine til it builds momentum and gets more irish followers but that's the reality of the situation right now.

to be honest i'm here in good faith and engaging with the debate in the UK for the first time (although had some good convos with friends here in Ireland) and all i've gotten is snarky comments when i've disagreed with someone.

MnaWoman · 10/06/2021 18:44

I keep misreading the name as KeevaCoffee for some reason Confused

aha no its my first name and surname then my DS realised it sounds like deecaf one day...i was delighted Grin
Mermoose · 10/06/2021 18:48

@DeeKavCoffee I've read you saying or implying that you're GC while posting things that seem the exact opposite - such as that Maya Forstater shouldn't have won her case - and I wanted the OP to know this so she could judge your comments with this in mind.

Anyone from Ireland?
DeeKavCoffee · 10/06/2021 18:51

@Mermoose my understanding is that GC is a broad church. i dont have to agree with everything you say and certainly don't expect the vice-versa. Maya's tribunal win was good for us but I don't think her conduct was particularly helpful, and im not going to gullibly accept her as a saintly martyr just because part of our politics aligns.

Mermoose · 10/06/2021 18:55

Great. Let's see, from your comments on various threads today you believe:

  • that Self ID was widely discussed in Ireland before being introduced
  • that pronouns in a teacher's emails are fine and no sign of any particular viewpoint
  • that Maya Forstater shouldn't have won her case
  • that a charity that lobbies for child transition should get money from An Post charity stamps

In what way are you gender critical?

DeeKavCoffee · 10/06/2021 18:59

@Mermoose i dont believe someone can change sex, nor do i want men in womens bathrooms. i think gender is a made-up concept that's trendy amongst those who consider themselves liberal.

thank you for your interrogation, did i pass? can i claim the GC badge or do i need to go to one of your training seminars?

sorry if you feel threatened by my asking questions. if you want an echo-chamber then maybe a whatsapp group (or a mirror) is the way forward for you.

Mermoose · 10/06/2021 19:03

I don't feel threatened by your asking questions - in fact, I don't think that you did ask questions, I did. and I'm perfectly happy to disagree with people and have a good discussion with them.

The problem isn't that we disagree. The problem is that you are making claims (that Ireland had a good discussion about this, that there are currently 'very very few' gender critical women in Ireland) which are untrue, and making them as someone claiming to be gender critical, when in fact all your posts suggest that you aren't.

DeeKavCoffee · 10/06/2021 19:05

@Mermoose i find it very hard to think that someone looking at my posts would not think i am GC. I didn't realise it was a club that requires total allegience uber alles.

you say that i am making claims 'that are untrue' yet my experience tells me otherwise, and i haven't seen someone give me evidence to disprove them, so it seems the problem that you have is that i am bring things up that you don't like.

enjoy your night, i am done with talking to zealots.

Mermoose · 10/06/2021 19:12

@DeeKavCoffee - someone on another thread asked you for evidence of your claims, and you reacted with 'i didnt realise i had to provide written testimony to any effect'. As for evidence that there was no debate here, evidence was provided - the Denton's report and a blog by a trans person.

I didn't realise it was a club that requires total allegience uber alles
Pointing out that you have made several dodgy claims and said that Maya Forstater shouldn't have won her case is requiring total allegiance? Nice Nazi reference too.

Enjoy your night too.

Hmm There’s loads of us in my experience; what makes you state there aren’t? If you want to get involved there are a good few groups mentioned on this thread and there are others too, I can PM you?

I would also have to disagree with you re: Self ID was widely discussed in Ireland. Even activists who were pro Self ID have said it wasn’t widely discussed at all.

You were quick to throw the echo chamber and zealots remarks at the other poster too Confused

Mermoose · 10/06/2021 19:24

Comparing feminists to Nazis, just like ... oh wow, just like TRAs do.

DeeKavCoffee · 10/06/2021 19:27

@roobytuesday thanks a PM would be great! i'm in sligo so maybe there's none over in the Wesht Grin

I dont think i was quick to throw it around tbh (at least not in the context of MN in general) because any time i ask good faith questions on here (and i have posted a year or so ago with another account) i am given snarky responses and emojis as if i should either know it already or just blindly accept it. @Mermoose was the worst i've had though, interogatting my 'credentials' as GC.

DeeKavCoffee · 10/06/2021 19:28

@Mermoose not everyone who disagrees with or questions you is a TRA petal, now maybe go for a walk and crab suas.

MiddleMary · 10/06/2021 19:30

And if you are on twitter, @stellaomalley3 is def worth a follow.
