HmmHmmHmm I don't know what's worse here. 'Anyone with a cervix' (so presumably including infant girls??), the complete absence of the word women, or the #dropyourpants hashtag.

It's dehumanising to refer to people only by their body parts.

And the TRAs say that it's feminists are obsessed with genitals? Hmm

OVienna · 07/06/2021 21:16

@HermioneWeasley

I had hoped that the extensive coverage of Stonewall’s batshittery would have made people think again about this sort of language. Alas, not yet

Yep this

Gumbomambo · 07/06/2021 21:26

I’ve read several threads recently that’s says the use of this language never ever happens and if it does it isn’t that important either. I also find the “drop your pants” nonsense pretty shitty. It sounds a bit like “get your knickers off” which has unpleasant connotations for me and I would imagine many Women.

Gumbomambo · 07/06/2021 21:27

Just to clarify I do think the word woman is hugely important when discussing things that effect only women.

I Hope you don't mind, Horizon, I have copied your post onto another thread, to illustrate the sexism.

TofuDelights · 07/06/2021 21:39

Thanks Purgatory, this whole thing is so shocking. And to think this has all been paid for with public money. Heads really should roll for this one.

That makes no sense.

The definition for male refers to all living organisms that are male.

Because medicine.net decided to genuflect to the doctrine of gender identity, it removed the matching definition for all living organisms that are female and replaced it with a definition for female that explicitly applies only to humans.

So now we no longer have a matching set of definitions even though being divided into two distinct and mutually exclusive sexes is a universal truth for all species of living organisms that create new organisms through sexual, anisogamous (requiring the forming and then combining of two different gametes) reproduction.

For a science website that is a serious error.

(Of course this set of definitions tells us much about the direction and nature of this debate. Who is defining and who is being defined.)

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/06/2021 21:50

@CharlieParley - Of course this set of definitions tells us much about the direction and nature of this debate. Who is defining and who is being defined

The fact it is only changed for female is really all we need to know. Transmen don't count. Women don't count. XY chromosomes are all that counts.

WoolOfBat · 07/06/2021 22:02

So looking at that definition transwomen are both men and women unless they have had complete bottom surgery and removed their testicles?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/06/2021 22:06

@WoolOfBat

Nope. They are both male and female. They don't provide definitions for man or woman.
NiceGerbil · 07/06/2021 22:07

I just looked at the definition...

They are using FEMALE. not woman, girl. That many say oh they've always been about social stuff (which is bollocks) but female is still for sex.

Erm.

'Female: The traditional definition of female was "an individual of the sex that bears young" or "that produces ova or eggs". However, things are not so simple today. Female can be defined by physical appearance, by chromosome constitution (see Female chromosome complement), or by gender identification. Female chromosome complement: The large majority of females have a 46, XX chromosome complement (46 chromosomes including two X chromosomes). A minority of females have other chromosome constitutions such as 45,X (45 chromosomes including only one X chromosome) and 47,XXX (47 chromosomes including three X chromosomes).'

Sooooo....

FEMALE can mean anything.
Why the massive ramble about genetic disorders I have no clue.

I suppose to make the ?scientist ?doctor who wrote the first bit feel a bit justified in. Redefining human sex of female to mean... Anything.

Bloody hell.

MsFogi · 07/06/2021 22:08

I wonder if they employed the equivalent wording for testicular cancer/prostate cancer screening.....Hmm

NiceGerbil · 07/06/2021 22:09

Ochon yes.

They are male because sex that produces sperm.

They are female because gender id.

Leaving literally no words to classify the two sexes as discrete groups in humans.

What are they thinking??!!

Theunamedcat · 07/06/2021 22:10

I'm on my period I was always told to avoid a smear at that time so no we are not all smear ready

NiceGerbil · 07/06/2021 22:11

MsFogi they never do.

Men are men. Men have penises, prostates, other things.

No people with penises. No those with testicles.

Which is ironic because unlike much of female reproductive stuff mentioned, if you've got a dick and balls it's quite apparent.

Prostate less so I suppose.

Eaumyword · 07/06/2021 22:37

That 'campaign' is exactly what a 6th form Young Enterprise group would come up with and then have to be quietly reminded how desperately inappropriate it is and why Shock
I'm all for a giggle in life, but those hashtags are vulgar and unpleasantly sexual for a medical procedure. Not funny. Or encouraging.
By the way, I agree with the pp that suggested we don't call them smears. I personally prefer cervical screening.

NiceGerbil · 07/06/2021 22:42

6th form boys

Drop your knickers and spread your legs ffs

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 07/06/2021 22:44

At least it stops the weirdos turning up at the surgery, saying I'm a woman can I have my smear test please. The ones who fish out used pads from the sanitary bins 'to see what it feels like to be a woman'

Triphazards · 07/06/2021 22:54

Anyone with a cervix would look at me,
And know I dream of you.

NiceGerbil · 07/06/2021 22:55

I doubt that happens much at all in real life.

Most trans women are not areseholes.

It's the orgs that are pushing 'on their behalf' to remove our language.

And loads of women need clear obvious language.

If you're a woman aged X to y please get a smear it detects certain cancers early so they can be treated.

If you are worried in any way please contact your surgery and discuss it, they will do everything they can to make you feel as comfortable as possible, and you can have a woman do the smear if you wish. You can request this when you book.

The transmen stuff is not why this is happening. Transmen know they are female. Periods breasts etc.

Individual records can and should record gender id as well as sex. So the letters go according to sex but it can be to Mr d. Jones. And the medics they deal with should respect that.

At an individual level.

Obfuscating the message for ALL women. Referring to us by body parts. With drop your pants.

No. Just fuck off.

OnWednesdaysWeWearMink · 07/06/2021 23:54

How did no one involved in this campaign spot what a terrible idea this was?

Did they speak to any medical professionals? Did they speak to any women who are reluctant to get a smear? Did they speak to any trans men who are reluctant to get a smear?

They could have devised a campaign that sensitively addresses the reasons why women and trans men don’t come for a smear. They could have educated them on who should come. They could have created ads for trans men letting them know that they will be welcomed. They could have tailored messaging for victims of sexual abuse, drawing on expertise from doctors who know what to say.

Whoever came up with this isn’t not qualified to be a marketing professional.

Spidey66 · 08/06/2021 00:00

I don't have a cervix. It was removed when I had a hysterectomy. I'm stiĺl a woman though!

ancientgran · 08/06/2021 00:08

@UppityPuppity

I always understood that men had pants and women had knickers. Still I suppose there's a pair of y-fronts there too

Yes - I’ve never worn pants - only knickers, and I don’t drop them when I have a smear, I take them off.

Such utterly revolting language has been made up by a juvenile and will only put women - if they know that they have a cervix - off.

Looking forward to their campaign for prostate examinations - no doubt it will be ‘get your cock out’

I'm a woman and I don't have a cervix so I don't need a smear test anymore, no one does after having their cervix removed and I've had to remind them of that at the surgery more than once.

I don't think getting their cock out would be much help with a prostate examination.

ancientgran · 08/06/2021 00:08

But women without a cervix don't need a smear test. I think that is being clear.

Individual records should record that as well as I've been chased for a smear before now and it could actually be very upsetting for a woman who has had to have hers removed. Fortunately it doesn't bother me.

The drop your pants is unnecessary, I think most women (with or without a cervix) know what happens.
