POLICE Scotland faced anger and ridicule after a clampdown on stickers from a feminist group opposed to the relaxation of gender self-ID laws.

The national force was accused of a “chilling” attack on free speech after announcing it was probing the matter as a “hate” crime.

Fife Police urge people to report ‘hate crime’ stickers – then say they are not illegal

Police in Fife urged people to report stickers said to be related to a hate crime – before removing a tweet after it was found no laws had been broken.

So much time and resources to waste on this shit; so little interest in real actual crime Angry

Just for clarity. A sticker saying women won't shut up is hate speech? So women should shut up Fife police? For clarity.

DeRigueurMortis · 24/05/2021 01:48

In bold for extra clarity - if I'm allowed by the police of course Hmm

All this Twitter stuff is bizarre.

Serious orgs saying silly things.
Then deleting them if there's negative reaction.

Where are the grown ups?

Zinco · 24/05/2021 02:26

There was probably a thread on this at the time, but a few months back...

thetab.com/uk/edinburgh/2020/11/27/more-transphobic-stickers-have-been-found-on-edinburgh-uni-campus-68683

More transphobic stickers have been spotted on Edinburgh University Campus.

A fourth year Edinburgh student saw the stickers on two lampposts around uni, by 40 George Square and the other two just outside Brewlab on South College Street.

One sticker read “Seahorses ARE horses. Hotdogs ARE dogs. There is no debate. #WarOnWomen.”

Is this like a deliberate troll campaign against the police?

What's the most innocent thing you can say that they will still overreact to?

When dictionary definitions of words are hate speech, it's all gone a bit Clockwork 1984 Brave New Farm, hasn't it?

I was thinking the same.

I realise that they have been trained into overreacting, and the situation has been complicated by the confusing application of “non-crime hate incidents” and the failure of the press (and others) to separate out those from the category “hate crimes”.

But activists must be triggering these incidents and the police fall for it often enough for it to make them look very foolish. There needs to be a top-down drive to prevent it, but likely the problem is coming, at least in part, from confusing messages from that very source.

And of course, we have seen recently that Stonewall may have been offering incorrect legal advice to universities. Given that a number of police forces and police bodies are also taking advice from Stonewall, it seems quite plausible that the same is happening to them.

Iamhangingin · 24/05/2021 06:02

I live in Kirkcaldy. I am have in my possession a rather lot of controversial stickers which obviously I'll be handing into the police station as contraband. Thank God it's only stickers they are worried about, I'd hate to get rid of my controversial T-Shirt collection or my very practical adult human female tote bag.....

FindTheTruth · 24/05/2021 06:14

What would Fife police say about shoes?

Don't be daft!

Women have more important and pressing concerns that to be spending time trying to wind the police up.

On the other hand, people who have little better to do than reporting little stickers which say "women will not be quiet", are surely the trolls.

Quite. real crimes should be the priority for our police not being the arm of a totalitarian ideology

MiladyBerserko · 24/05/2021 08:25

The Police were no doubt briefed by one of the many LGBT advisors groups.

I attended a conference by The Scottish Trans Alliance/Equality Network, where, in one of the workshops, the presenter from STA repeatedly told the delegates, mainly from local government and unions, to report all incidents of stickers as 'hate incidents'. James Morton of the STA is also in record on Twitter encouraging people to report stickers to police, saying " we need the stats".

Little wonder the police are confused.

SoapboxFox · 24/05/2021 08:32

Maybe someone will report the police to themselves, for harassing women who don't think men should define what a woman is!

Tibtom · 24/05/2021 08:33

Can I report any 'vote SNP' stickers or placards left up? I think that is very contrversial. Obviously 'yes' stickers too especially as they often have anti-English overtones?

334bu · 24/05/2021 08:42

Love the " There's been a sticker!" tweet.

Yeah I just want to reiterate that particular part

When hate crime laws have such broad language as "perceived" and "or by any other person" then anything goes.

*written from memory, I'm not looking up the exact wording at this time of the morning.

MiladyBerserko · 24/05/2021 08:57

Tibtom

Rhiannon Spear, poster girl of the SNP, revealed her colours this weekend.

To be fair, she mostly confirmed how dim she is.

A non crime hate incident right there! Where do I report it?

Eyesofdisarray · 24/05/2021 09:06

People are 'furious' at finding these stickers? Really?
I can think of lots more stuff to be furious about.

Eyesofdisarray · 24/05/2021 09:07

Love the shoes thing

Eyesofdisarray · 24/05/2021 09:08

Rhiannon doesn't seem very sharp for someone with a name like 'Spear'
