Has the GENDER question changed on the Govt Covid test reporting site?

I don't know if I am remembering it wrong. I have been filling the online reporting form out for my DC for weeks. I have got to the point of doing it on autopilot. I am pretty sure that when it came to the "sex" question, they always asked for "gender" instead. I remember the irritation.

This morning, when I filled it out, there was no mention of gender. Or sex for that matter. It asked:

"Which of the following is on your medical records?

Male
Female
Neither"

I am 99% sure that wasn't the question I answered when I last filled this form in on Sunday.

Anyone else notice this change? Or was it ever thus and I have a false memory?

Interested I this - I thought it had changed too but not sure of exact wording.

NancyDrawed · 22/04/2021 09:43

I noticed this too and inwardly cheered, although in the summary page it still comes up as 'Gender'

A small step in the right direction, I yhink, although the 'neither' is a bit of a fudge.

CatChant · 22/04/2021 09:43

Yes, it has. I noticed it last week and was so pleased.

Like you, I always muttered in irritation when I came to it and it asked for 'gender' instead of sex.

The tide is turning.Smile

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/04/2021 09:47

Yes I nearly started a thread about it but things were a bit crazy on here so I held off.

It still conflated sex and gender though.

I'm.sure it said what gender is on your medical records and the summary still says gender.

Not good enough. Sex is whats relevant..more men are dying after all.

IloveJKRowling · 22/04/2021 09:49

The gender question annoyed me too to the point that last time I considered not bothering testing and just isolating for 10 day!. It's bloody annoying when there's no option but to tick a 'gender' box (and also, incidentally, quite transphobic to non binary people when they only present two options - so clearly conflating gender with sex).

When it comes to medical stuff like this it really should be sex.

I hope it's changed (not done it recently).

Screenshot from 14th September.

I was so irked I saved it for posterity.

Phew, glad I wasn't imagining things!

I guess it is a step in the right direction, but they are still not going to get the right answer in some cases, are they? I assume some trans people will have both the words "male" and "female" on their medical records.

So frustrated at the Government pussy footing around an important question that the vast majority of people do not find controversial. It's just pathetic, actually.

Weird options. What if someone has both on their record 🤔

MagpiePi · 22/04/2021 10:18

Who would have 'neither'?

NancyDrawed · 22/04/2021 11:49

Actually I've just done one of these for school and that question is now:
other/not specified/I don't know

So I suppose if you are reporting for someone else, you might need to give the third response.
But in reality, we are all either of the male or female sex regardless of our identity so for clarity (and data collection purposes) surely it would be better to have those two options only?

aliasundercover · 22/04/2021 12:50

I’ve been doing weekly tests since before Christmas. Every week I pointed out that the question should have asked about sex rather than gender. I assumed they would just ignore me, but maybe somebody somewhere was actually reading?

GreyhoundG1rl · 22/04/2021 12:53

The mind boggles at the "I do not know" option 🤯

TheNumberfaker · 22/04/2021 12:54

I did actually complain about it saying Gender months ago using the feedback form. I can’t remember what I put though. I guess a few others have too.

I noticed the slight change on Sunday. I’ve got all my details defaulting in for me, but have to input them for my daughter’s results so noticed then.

persistentwoman · 22/04/2021 13:01

I suppose it's becoming increasingly embarrassing to have so much factual world wide data about the different reactions of the 2 sexes to the virus (death, serious illness etc) yet to have the NHS's fantasy categories being used?
Maybe the Stonewall grip on one of our national institutions is slipping and they're having to confidence to disobey? Grin

Novina · 22/04/2021 13:05

Yes, my daughter commented on the change last week.

Crumpetstoday · 22/04/2021 13:33

Yes. I actually complained (which I never do) through the feedback when I first started using it in March, so was ridiculously pleased when I saw that it had changed.

R0wantrees · 22/04/2021 13:51

This question is not at all easy for many people with limited literacy skills to read:

"Which of the following is on your medical records?"

There is no way this would have been signed off by NHS in the past.

Leafstamp · 22/04/2021 16:16

I also complained and was pleased to see it had changed. But I also agree that the new question is an example of the ridiculous knots organisations are tying themselves in to ask what should be a simple question, and as R0 says, being less accessible to some in the meantime.

In fact, I may complain again!

zzizzer · 22/04/2021 16:38

Last Thursday I had another option on the test and twice booking service though I can't upload a screenshot for some reason on the android app.

It said "which of the following describes how you think of yourself", followed by male, female, in another way, prefer not to say.

MazekeenSmith · 22/04/2021 16:39

Yes
It's slightly better than before but still problematic

Goldensyrupissticky · 22/04/2021 17:53

Spotted that two but thought I had become so jaded after what seems like endless hours filling in these forms. A positive step.

highame · 22/04/2021 17:54

Definitely getting rid of sex then! If they ask for gender somewhere else on the form, but not using the word sex then whilst there is acknowledgement that sex is needed for many reasons they are not going to use the word sex because it will offend. What's changed? Anyone have an answer, cause I'm really hacked off

Deliriumoftheendless · 22/04/2021 17:56

@NancyDrawed

This is what I saw last night, but in the summing up it still states gender.
nothingcomestonothing · 22/04/2021 18:37

The consent form for the covid vaccine I got at work had the following options:

Gender (circle selected option): Male Female Indeterminate Non-Binary Prefer not to say

I crossed them all out and wrote 'none'. The nurse checking the paperwork asked if it was 'one of these' gesturing at the area of 'indeterminate, non-binary' and I said 'I don't have a gender, which is a made up social construct. I have a sex, which is female, but it didn't ask that, so I'm not ticking it'. She looked at me like I might bite her.
