Apologies to the user who made this come about, but the thread with this in seems to have disappeared.
The OP wrote to the newspaper about misrepresentation of a male defendant as female and the paper responded with this opinion piece.
I forgot who the original op was, but thanks for spreading sunlight.

Twas me, thank you for sharing!

I think I'll email the editor back with a thanks - encourage him to keep going.

I did suggest the Scottish HCB and the mixed-sex prison estates as two possible angles for him to investigate...

poorsole · 15/04/2021 15:46

Wow, result UnderHisAye, well done!

UnderHisAye · 15/04/2021 15:49

Ah, I seriously doubt it was me, I actually wonder if they've been waiting for some pressure to be applied to justify wading in.

ChateauMargaux · 15/04/2021 16:20

Great to see this being reported. Thanks to @UnderHisAye and thanks to Lucy Hunter Blackburn for a straight talking piece.

ArabellaScott · 15/04/2021 16:23

Great to see these questions being asked. I mean, mindblowing that nobody apparently considered the implications of recording 'sex' as 'self ID'd', but anyway ...

Biscuitsanddoombar · 15/04/2021 16:24

Excellent piece!! As we’ve said many times, most people haven’t a clue this is going on

Edna311 · 15/04/2021 16:44

It is a good piece. I've been thinking about this recently (and talking to people who, as previously noted, were completely unaware). Yes, it changes the stats. But to what end? Is it simply the law of unintended consequences?

The article talks about how the reporting changes the perception of women as a group and that is a good point. But I wondered if it also be used in future to argue that since women are (apparently) committing more serious offences, there is less need for single sex spaces? I am a relative newcomer to this debate so I may be behind the times.

UppityPuppity · 15/04/2021 16:54

Well done! Flowers

Outbutnotoutout · 15/04/2021 17:00

Great piece.
Sex is real, and sometimes it matters, a lot.

CrossPurposes · 15/04/2021 18:19

Well done my former local paper for publishing this!

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2021 18:33

@ArabellaScott

Great to see these questions being asked. I mean, mindblowing that nobody apparently considered the implications of recording 'sex' as 'self ID'd', but anyway ...
Or worse, that someone did consider the consequences and either didn't care or thought they were good.
SunsetBeetch · 15/04/2021 18:38

Brilliant!

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 15/04/2021 18:50

An excellent piece. The more sunlight the better.

BuffyTheSlavishIdeologySlayer · 15/04/2021 20:23

Yes, @Edna311, it's a two pronged attack. Chip away at the statistics for crime so that women appear in more instances of violent and sexual crimes and the crimes of transwomen melt into them so are insignificant and hard to pinpoint.

Of course, if you point this out there's always the odd Rose West case that gets quoted, but such crimes are not only about as rare as hen's teeth- they are so unusual everybody knows about them in detail- but they are also usually partnered by a violent patterned man.

If it were truly about proving that men who transition into women were as statistically safe as them, they'd want the data kept pretty discrete as evidence.

It must be horrible if you are actually trans and your wishes have been bulldozed by the relative new activists, as there's an awful lot of crimes creeping in by individuals suffering an identity crisis, at the same time softer sentencing and criminal housing options have opened up for said individuals. Imagine that.
