Apologies to the user who made this come about, but the thread with this in seems to have disappeared.
The OP wrote to the newspaper about misrepresentation of a male defendant as female and the paper responded with this opinion piece.
I forgot who the original op was, but thanks for spreading sunlight.

More light is always good. Anyone in Scotland asking the candidates their position on this? How’s it going?

AMCoffeePMWine · 15/04/2021 20:39

Thanks for posting this, and thanks to the original OP for sharing. I just looked up Lucy on Twitter and she is on it! This really is starting to get covered.

Thank you @BuffyTheSlavishIdeologySlayer. I usually tend towards cock up rather than conspiracy, but the more I read, the more horrified I get.

And thank you too @UnderHisAye.

What a brillint article

Kara Dansky discusses pronouns and the influence on the way judges respond - plus the impact on sentencing and crime statistics: in some very sensitive areas:

It matters because this kind of imprecise, inaccurate reporting is at odds with our basic perceptions about men and women. Enough of it will lead us to believe that the perceptions themselves are wrong. The danger of this is two-fold. Violent men will be treated more leniently than they have any right to expect and women will be saddled with the reputation for violence that men have earned for themselves. Not only will men have succeeded in appropriating the mantle of womanhood but they will remake it in their own distorted image.

NB: I was transcribing from a video - I haven't seen the full piece - around 21min mark.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 16/04/2021 10:41

I may be wrong about the author - of the above piece - sorry, I'm relying on subtitles.

Well done to The Courier (also very good for football news) and @UnderHisAye. Jute, jam and journalism indeed.

WarriorN · 16/04/2021 13:13

Fantastic @UnderHisAye !

UnderHisAye · 16/04/2021 16:37

This sentence is just chilling @EmbarrassingAdmissions

Violent men will be treated more leniently than they have any right to expect and women will be saddled with the reputation for violence that men have earned for themselves.

It was recently reported in England that the number of women convicted of child sexual abuse had nearly doubled in the last five years.

But it turned out that no-one could say how much of this increase was because the authorities have begun to record cases as female that in the past would have been logged as male.

Well let me hazard a guess 🙄

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 16/04/2021 17:05

This sentence is just chilling @EmbarrassingAdmissions**

Isn't it just. That and Not only will men have succeeded in appropriating the mantle of womanhood but they will remake it in their own distorted image.

It captures what is happening so well. Because I've seen people comment as if they believe there's a huge uptick in the previously under-recognised phenomenon of female perpetrators of sex crimes, violent crimes, and more. - Readers/SM commentators are not picking up the nuance, and, even if they do, some people are commenting from their cognitive bias of misogyny or internalised misogyny rather than consider what is happening as a misrepresentation with a potential for wider harms.
