I just came out as GC at work, to the big boss and I feel a bit sick

I have NCed for this. I have just outed myself as GC in work to the big boss (and some others cced in).

I was asked to sign off on something that I just couldn't and I said so, and explained why.

I literally feel sick. Like I have put a big fat GC target on my back. My org is totally woke. I wonder how many times my response has been forwarded already.

@SweetPetrichor

You don’t ‘come out’ as GC. If I worked with you, I’d be reporting such behaviour for further education and disciplinary action. I reported similar behaviour relatively recently and it was handled very well. I don’t think you have anything to be proud of here and I hope any decent work place will remind you of company policy and/or professional behaviour.
Bloody hell. George Orwell foresaw it all!

I'd take action against anyone who tried to discipline me for the crime of suggesting risk assessment and the use of clear language Hmm

Who would be doing this 'educating'?

sanluca · 15/04/2021 14:44

You do have to wonder why someone should face disciplinary action and education because they alerted their boss (not social media, not newspapers, their boss) that a lack of risk assesment could harm the company....

Yeah, I'll bet you would.

SweetPetrichor
I find your stance terrifying. It’s authoritarian and dangerous.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/04/2021 14:48

I hope that post is left up.

JustcameoutGC · 15/04/2021 14:49

@MarieIVanArkleStinks I don't know what to say to you other than Flowers. Your experience is horrific. I hope you get your voice heard.

Well done op.

UppityPuppity · 15/04/2021 14:50

Well done OP. I have also come out as GC at work and am actively trying to ensure sex as opposed to gender is properly considered. FlowersFlowers

It's not down to you to decide what people to decide to come out as. You may have got a good response from your workplace. You wouldn't get such a good one from mine if you tried to dictate how others identify.

FlyPassed · 15/04/2021 14:52

Well done, and thank you @JustcameoutGC Flowers

OnandOnforHoursandHours · 15/04/2021 14:52

Petrichor, are you seriously suggesting that it’s better to make people afraid of speaking about issues that affect them, their clients and their companies?

I couldn't disagree more, and if I worked for a company that "handled something like this well", I would leave such company as soon as a sensible opportunity presented itself.

Conflating gender and biological sex is not professional.

Amazing isn't it.

The levels of intolerance from the tolerant, the levels of liberty allowed by the liberal, it is totalitarian and history of full of the horrors that result from this.

HollowTalk · 15/04/2021 14:54

If anyone spoke to me about re-educating me they'd get very short shrift. I'd also assume they'd never read 1984.

Erkrie · 15/04/2021 14:54

I'd be taking legal action.

DontBeRidiculous · 15/04/2021 14:55

in my professional view there is a reputational risk of our company being associated with exclusive gender neutral language such as cervix havers or chest feeders as well as the risk of confusing the people the material is aimed at.

Definitely! I would be extremely unhappy with this type of language, and if I had the option to go with another company that was less extreme in their language, I wouldn't think twice. You did them a favour by bringing to light that not everyone will smile and think how wonderful and "inclusive" they are.

DialSquare · 15/04/2021 14:56

Adding my support too OP. There are far more of us than the "further educators', no matter what they'd have you believe.

Dontcallmewifey · 15/04/2021 14:57

@OnandOnforHoursandHours

Petrichor, are you seriously suggesting that it’s better to make people afraid of speaking about issues that affect them, their clients and their companies?
Yes, that is exactly what they are doing.

Because according to this ideology, submission to the ideology trumps every other concern, safety, fairness, inclusion, justice, evidence, facts. Nothing else matters but submission to the ideology.

QuentinBunbury · 15/04/2021 14:57

Can you use your companies bullying and harassment policies to help here? That sounds terribly unfair

RedDogsBeg · 15/04/2021 14:57

Oh and well done, OP, you should have nothing to fear, how appalling that you do.Flowers.

PumpkinSpiceWoman · 15/04/2021 14:57
@FidgetWonkham

GC = gender critical

I’m guessing OP couldn’t sign off on something that was conflating sex and gender. In these instances there is often a contravention of the Equalities Act, so therefore should not be signed off on by anyone who wants to keep their job.

Of course, this is just my guess and if I was OP I’d be careful about giving out further details due to protecting my identity and confidentiality at work.
Except y'all ("gender critical" people) made such a big deal about asking whether English law used the terms interchangeably. When you found out it does indeed use "sex" and "gender" interchangeably, y'all have frantically pretended that didn't happen!

oakleaffy · 15/04/2021 14:57

@nocoolnamesleft

Gender critical - recognising that a woman is an adult human female, that women and girls are discriminated against because of their biology, and that gender is primarily a tool of the patriarchy used to oppress women.
Ah, this makes sense.

But what on earth is wrong with that?

Women are indeed ''Adult human females''

Can someone be sacked for saying this?
