Is anyone watching this? With the really upsetting and unarguable against video footage I can't see how the defence can build a case. Also the baiting by the defence lawyer of the female EMT witness was horrendous, as was the judge telling her off. She held her ground though, as did the previous child (female) witnesses.

And yes there are Southerners who protest against racism Hmm

But I totally agree the important thing is to keep trying to make progress on addressing racism ... all over the country.

Minutes before the verdict was read a black girl was shot and killed by police in Ohio

I've just watched the verdict being read . He showed no remorse what so ever . He didn't react at all . I'd love to know what his lawyer said to him outside the door .

NotTerfNorCis · 21/04/2021 09:48

His eyes were darting about. He looked panicked to me.

Bedsheets4knickers · 21/04/2021 10:01

He's always been twitchy tho . Do you think they already knew the outcome ? Surely his lawyer must of known this hadn't gone well for them .

It isn't over is it, there are 3 other officers who will be going to trial next I think.

Yes, in August I think. They must be scared now

@CousinKrispy

Branding, I'm not sure about that....I'm a fellow Southerner, and I went to school with plenty of kids who bragged about family in the Klan, and I moved to Texas right before poor James Byrd Jr was dragged to death behind the car of three white supremacists. And of course Sandra Bland and Botham Jean were both in Texas as well. (Yeah, I realize Texas is kind of its own world, not officially part of the South, but it certainly isn't part of Up North .... The Charleston church shooting is a little closer to home).

I do think the North tends to look down on the South, and pat itself on the back for being less backwards and racist, while actually still having plenty of entrenched racism that it needs to deal with.

What you say is true. I should have been more specific that I was talking about police incidents.

It's massively encouraging that this could happen; that the 'blue wall' was breached - well, flattened - and a jury was unanimous in convicting an officer.

After all, every system delivers what it is designed to deliver, even when this differs widely from its stated aims. And a just verdict, or rather verdicts, was delivered, so we know the justice system isn't actually broken, nor is it unfit for purpose, it's just been bent or twisted too many times in the past.

More needs to be done to consolidate this sound result, including changing the law around partial immunity for police officers and doing some defending so police forces are not gleefully stockpiling military grade equipment that they then itch to take into battle against those they are sworn to protect. 😕

Protection for whistleblowers and an obligation on everyone to speak up instantly if things go wrong on the job, even if it means challenging a superior officer, need to be put in place, too. If Lane or Keung had pushed Chauvin a bit harder on rolling Mr Floyd into the recovery position, there's no doubt he could have emerged from the encounter alive.

And, hell's teeth, let's see some effective de-escalation go into officer training! If someone had sat Mr Floyd down on the doorsill of the squad car and just said, "Take a few deep breaths, then tell me what the issue is with getting in, and we'll work out what's the best way forward together," what a difference that could have made!

NewlyGranny · 21/04/2021 16:15

Defunding, not defending! And it doesn't mean cutting off all the money, just spending it wisely according to a sensible plan instead of, "Ooh look, the army is selling off used HUMVs at bargain prices!"

CousinKrispy · 21/04/2021 17:20

Those are all great ideas, Newly.

Delphinium20 · 21/04/2021 18:08

Well said, Newly!!

Of all the things proposed in the George Floyd Policing Bill (which the Republicans pretty much rejected everything) de-escalation training was the one thing that they agreed upon and seems likely to go ahead.
NewlyGranny · 24/04/2021 16:29

Trouble is, perhaps it's not a training issue at all. These kind of massive escalations leading to homicide don't happen much to white Americans, so clearly police officers already know how to de-escalate and behave as if people's lives matter. I wonder whether it's an irrational but overwhelming fear of black people that makes them trigger happy? After all, we have Chauvin's justification that Floyd was a 'sizeable' guy and 'looked like he was on something.' Right there is the myth of superhuman black strength which the prosecution so ably dismantled.

But how to address that?
