Is anyone watching this? With the really upsetting and unarguable against video footage I can't see how the defence can build a case. Also the baiting by the defence lawyer of the female EMT witness was horrendous, as was the judge telling her off. She held her ground though, as did the previous child (female) witnesses.

I didn't like how Chauvin portrayed himself today . I hope the Jurors have seen enough . He came across so arrogant . I only caught a minute or two today but he enraged me .

BananaMaltLoaf · 15/04/2021 21:43

Good to hear that a summings up takes place 🙏.

NewlyGranny · 16/04/2021 08:26

Both sides sum up on Monday, then the jury is sequestered for as long as it takes for them to reach a unanimous verdict. A majority won't do, apparently. And if they can't agree there has to be a re-trial. 🤦🏼‍♀️

MyPatchworkQuilt · 19/04/2021 21:59

Anyone watch the prosecution summing up?

Only watched half but I thought the Prosection have done a good job talking to the jury from a human perspective.

I also thought it was helpful to remind the jury that this isn't the State versus the Police, it's the State versus Chauvin and that we trust the Police on the whole. The point he was making is that officers who don't follow their training, values etc are not good for the Police. I agree with all that.
That doesn't convince me there isn't a systemic problem that needs addressing though.

Do we know when the verdict is due?

chilling19 · 19/04/2021 22:50

I watched it and thought it was a good summing up from the prosecution. Just got to wait for the jury to come back now.

I missed the prosecution's but I watched a fair bit from the defence . It was very long . Left me feeling slightly unsettled . It was like he was finally showing what he was good at. I just hope the prosecution have done enough . I want this to be the start of a change in heavy handed policing in the USA.

MissSM9102 · 20/04/2021 20:38

Verdict is in. Expecting announcement at 930pm GMT. Really unsure what this means with being so quick.

Delphinium20 · 20/04/2021 20:43

So on edge right now. Just wanted to say thanks to the non-US posters who have been watching with those of us who are closer to this trial. We really appreciate your concern-please send a little good karma our way that Chauvin will be convicted. Can't stomach another week of riots.

MissSM9102 · 20/04/2021 20:57

I can’t even begin to imagine what the Floyd family must be feeling right now but my thoughts are with them and I truly hope their strength is a step towards a change.

@SmellsLikeWineIGuess

In the Grace Millane murder trial, the jury convicted because after enough time with his hands around her neck, preventing her from breathing, she did indeed stop breathing, but he didn’t remove his hands, so of course she died.

It’s the same thing. Too much time elapsed after Floyd stopped resisting, and then stopped moving, and yet the knee stayed. It stayed on his neck until he died.

However, I will not be in the least bit surprised if justice isn’t served.

My perception very much is - the US is a lawless society. People carry guns and use them willy nilly. Police routinely get away with murder.

From what my kids see of the US in the news - it’s akin to what I used to see growing up, in countries like Northern Ireland, Beirut.

I am being somewhat provocative.

But my point is - the US is not the idyllic, promised land of my youth. It doubt it ever actually was, but these days it absolutely is not. It’s no longer somewhere people look to for any kind of leadership - but certainly not for moral ideals on things like ‘justice’ and ‘democracy’.

If Chavin walks free, America’s standing and respect from the world will continue to plummet.

Absolutely this!
PaterPower · 20/04/2021 22:05

I wish the politicians over there would shut up - would it have killed them to wait for the trial to be over before potentially giving him grounds for an appeal?

HmmmmmmInteresting · 20/04/2021 22:09

GUILTY!!!!!!!!!

Biscuitsanddoombar · 20/04/2021 22:09

On all charges!!!! What a relief

CousinKrispy · 20/04/2021 22:20

I can hardly believe it! What a relief, if a very bittersweet one.

Delphinium20 · 20/04/2021 22:24

Guilty on all 3 counts!!!! Thank god! We're crying in joy and relief!!!

chilling19 · 20/04/2021 22:25

Justice is served. RIP George Floyd. ❤️

Thank god for this result. It’s reported that Joe Biden talked with George Floyd’s family on Monday, and the President will comment on it today.

I remain gutted for George Floyd’s family. Justice for them would be to have George still with them.

Bedsheets4knickers · 20/04/2021 22:35

I'm so happy for you all in the USA . Justice is served . Please let this be the start of change . I've been on tender hooks all day .

SunsetBeetch · 20/04/2021 22:39

Wow. My stomach has been in knots over this. Great verdict.

BrandineDelRoy · 20/04/2021 23:16

I don't think this will change anything, but Chauvin will be a sacrifice to the system. I was appalled when the cop who shot Philando Castile went free years ago.

But, as a citizen of the American South, I do find it interesting that almost all of the country's racial issues come out of the North.

MyPatchworkQuilt · 20/04/2021 23:38

Wow. Just that. I put this to one side as I imagined a jury would deliberate for a week or so in a case with so much evidence...came back here for comments and was amazed to see it was 9.30pm. Went straight to BBC and there it was on the front page. I actually stared at for a good moment then I think I did a cry/joy reaction. It's the best and the worst. Justice, faith, and sadness that it ever happened. But relief for his family I am sure. What happened will never be forgotten, we have to never forget. George Floyd, may his soul rest in peace.

I sadly think you are correct
lboogy · 21/04/2021 04:36

Thank goodness for the result. Justice server finally.

I do wonder what the defence could have done differently though. Maybe call character witnesses? The evidence was too strong so maybe the answer is nothing.

Delphinium20 · 21/04/2021 04:41

But, as a citizen of the American South, I do find it interesting that almost all of the country's racial issues come out of the North.

This is quite a bizarre generalization. Minnesota now is one of the first states to actually hold a police officer accountable for killing Black people. Minneapolis elects far higher numbers of Black legislators compared to their population (80% white, yet they send Keith Ellison and Ihlan Omar to Congress). Northern states fought the south to END slavery, never had Jim Crow and currently welcome far more African immigrants than any southern state. Racial issues aren't coming out of the North - it's much easier to argue that the North is addressing them - the protests last May against Floyd's murder were majority white people (based on population ratios, in part)...Minneapolis citizens called out the injustice and led the movement-I didn't see Kentucky starting protests when Breonna was murdered-a woman too!

I'm sure it sucks to be from the south and always be labeled as the region that fought a war to keep Black people slaves, but racism is all over this country so maybe we just focus on ridding it wherever we find it.

CousinKrispy · 21/04/2021 06:49

Branding, I'm not sure about that....I'm a fellow Southerner, and I went to school with plenty of kids who bragged about family in the Klan, and I moved to Texas right before poor James Byrd Jr was dragged to death behind the car of three white supremacists. And of course Sandra Bland and Botham Jean were both in Texas as well. (Yeah, I realize Texas is kind of its own world, not officially part of the South, but it certainly isn't part of Up North .... The Charleston church shooting is a little closer to home).

I do think the North tends to look down on the South, and pat itself on the back for being less backwards and racist, while actually still having plenty of entrenched racism that it needs to deal with.
