English teacher tells class that JKR is transphobic

QpopTYUIop9 · 25/03/2021 17:41

Just that really.
I'm absolutely fuming.
30 kids now "hate" JKR apparently.
This is an abuse of influence surely, not to mention a worrying lack of critical thinking.
I've printed out the "transphobic" tweets so my Y7 child can make up their own mind. With a lot of ranting from me in the background Angry.

foxhat · 26/03/2021 22:12

I think we all owe it to our children to challenge that sort of misogyny. I hope the school respond appropriately as to do otherwise creates a very anti-female culture.

DdraigGoch · 26/03/2021 22:35

@PintPot

Also what is this shameful 'item of Hogwarts merchandise' that the teacher now no longer wears? A sorting hat? An invisibility cloak?
Wrackspurt siphons. According to Luna Lovegood, wrackspurts float in through your ears and make one's brain go fuzzy. Siphons keep them out...
gardenbird48 · 26/03/2021 22:36

@ArabellaScott

Ah, they are male, gardenbird. They get a free pass.
I see my error. Sad

Totally agree Foxhat - since I discovered what was going on, I haven't been able to look away and I will do everything I can to sort this whole situation until it is sorted. I am not leaving without my daughters having a better deal than they seem to have now!

RowanAlong · 26/03/2021 22:46

That’s atrocious. Definitely complain!

Hibari · 27/03/2021 04:45

@Helmetbymidnight

poor Hibari who believes feminists in the UK are all Christian Conservatives. Grin
If I said "no feminists in the UK are christian conservatives," I'd be pulling a 'no true Scotsman.' A bunch of conservative christians in the UK definitely identify as feminist....should I call them FICCs? Grin ...and a bunch of women who claims to be feminists merrily work with American conservative christian groups to try and erode trans rights - potential fallout be damned. Looking at Bell's case and the effect it could have had on kids being able to access contraception for example - her lawyer legitimately admitted this was part of his end goal.

Funnily enough, they weren't able to quote anything from JKR directly to support their claim. Perhaps you can?

She's been analysed to death by people all over the internet. Yes she's transphobic.
I'm not going to dig up a million links for you as most of it is really boring. Here's a video of someone explaining it without being hugely boring.

...and to save you some time: I suffered through the "refutes," videos and they all reek of MRA/Alt-light. The King Critical one I got linked in another thread literally has Carl "Sargon of Akaad" Benjamin (a failed UKIP politician and proud misogynistic anti-feminist) as a guest.

WelcomeMarch · 27/03/2021 05:37

Oh come on, Hibari, she’s jaded about male behaviour.

Are you saying that’s the same as transphobia?

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/03/2021 06:31

So if trans people should decide what is transphobic, how come women are told they have no say and can’t decide what is woman phobic?

If I were a pupil there I'd be tempted to print out what JK's piece, stick it on the wall next to English class (just before lunch time when the teacher's not there), and put another sign next to it saying 'What JK actually said'.

NecessaryScene1 · 27/03/2021 07:15

Yes, I think that's actually a pretty fair representation. "Analysed to death".

As opposed to being listened to and responded to.

JustSpeculation · 27/03/2021 07:35

I'm about 10 minutes into the contrapoints video, above, and I'm getting really bored. Does anyone know when the substantial arguments come in? I'd like to skip straight to them, if possible.

EdgeOfACoin · 27/03/2021 07:41

Hibari I presume you have actually read JKR’s essay for yourself rather than just read/listened to a bunch of other people’s opinions on it?

Feelinghothothottoday · 27/03/2021 07:42

I love the way the penis is still trying to tell us women how to behave and if we disagree we are transphobic.

adviceseekingnamechanger · 27/03/2021 08:05

I don't think we'll get anywhere with people like hibari because in summary:

Biology is transphobic
Sexuality is transphobic
Women's rights that don't centre men is transphobic
JKR asserting that trans rights are human rights and acknowledging that the majority of trans people pose absolutely no risk is transphobic

Safeguarding is transphobic
Not wanting children to consent to irreversible drugs and surgeries is transphobic
Trans people whose opinions aren't mainstream are transphobic.
A vigil for a murdered women that doesn't include trans people in its activism is transphobic
Debate/questioning any of this is transphobic
Pointing out that no trans people have been murdered in the U.K. in a couple of years but plenty of women have is transphobic

And we're all allied with actual transphobes/homophobes on the alt-right.

Wake the fuck up. This is patriarchy 2.0 aka shut up women and accept what we tell you. And don't have the audacity to discuss it. Ever. Because that's transphobic too.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/03/2021 08:31

Good luck with that Grin

eurochick · 27/03/2021 08:32

"I'm not going to dig up a million links for you as most of it is really boring"

Why would you need a million links? Only one link is needed: the one to her actual essay.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/03/2021 08:46

Why are followers of gender identity ideology always so unable to articulate what they personally have a problem with in what JKR wrote, and engage in reasoned discussion about it, that they have to link to interminably dull TRA blogs and videos?

This is a discussion board.

JustSpeculation · 27/03/2021 09:04

I see what you mean. I watched a fair amount of the video, and didn't get the impression that she was ever going to get to any kind of point.

I have a Saturday to get on with.

midgeswithnofingernails · 27/03/2021 09:10

Somethings are complex and take time to explain , although even the hardest quantum theory often has a succinct and sufficient analogy

And sometimes people dress things up as complex and in depth by taking a lot of time to not explain

As an absolute minimum you need a short pitch that makes people think it's worth hearing you out . "Witch" isn't it however

Helleofabore · 27/03/2021 09:10

@Mummyoflittledragon

So if trans people should decide what is transphobic, how come women are told they have no say and can’t decide what is woman phobic?
I think we need to keep on repeating this.

Maybe people will start to realize the utter hypocrisy of what they are saying.

Then again, I doubt it.

It is all about purity spirals isn’t it? Oh, that person who has a interview platform based show covering all topics of life had that person on. So they are poisoned for ever from having any credibility.

People are so busy looking into feminists and those who incidentally align interests into some feminist issues yet diverge on many other topics, they forget to look at what activists are actually saying now and the background of those activists that are clearly misogynistic and about lowering boundaries for women and children to suit their own purposes. Boundaries that should not be lowered.

Recently, we have seen links posted to a prominent activist’s blog site across several threads running at the moment as an ‘authority’ source on trans issues. The author of the blog was heavily involved in sexually harassing a woman online. The author of the blog, who it seems also discusses how well trans people ‘pass’, tweeted mocking comments about female toilet habits and noises along with another prominent activist. Iirc that was on IWD. (And if you can’t see the problem with that perhaps no one can help you) Those incidents were only from this year so far.

So... will the hypocrisy be seen? Doubt it.

Zinco · 27/03/2021 09:15

...and to save you some time: I suffered through the "refutes," videos and they all reek of MRA/Alt-light. The King Critical one I got linked in another thread literally has Carl "Sargon of Akaad" Benjamin (a failed UKIP politician and proud misogynistic anti-feminist) as a guest.

Your comment here says next to nothing about the quality of the response videos. I personally wouldn't care about the guest he had on... who cares?

It's quality of argument that matters, not what freaking guest he invited!

If you don't understand something this basic, I can only imagine you aren't competent to be trying to assess any of these videos for yourself.

TheBuffster · 27/03/2021 09:31

When I was at school arguments about writers generally involved.

  1. Actually reading the text.
  2. A close reading of the text
  3. Reading criticism of the text that uses quotes and primary sources to illustrate a point.
  4. Reading a variety of takes and viewpoints from verified sources (Wikipedia not allowed)
  5. Forming your own argument using quotes from the text.
  6. Reinforcing and contrasting your argument with other critics' views.
  7. Writing a conclusion that would sum up your argument in a few concise sentences. For the top grade you'd indicate questions or new readings your own take had thrown up. Put simply, point, evidence, explain.

Now it appears to be:

  1. Read someone else's criticism of a primary text that doesn't reference the text, rather relies on strawmen and character assassination.
  2. Link above.
  3. Argue it's super obvious and anyone asking for your primary evidence, own take or a summary is wrong, stupid and bigoted.
  4. Say you're too tired/world weary to concisely sum up the main points.

God it must be easy to get the top grade today.

Helleofabore · 27/03/2021 09:33

But zinco, purity spirals!

If a person who has consorted with a problematic person and listened to what they said (not necessarily agreeing in part or whole), they are not credible. Even if they personally have come across with integrity and balance on this issue.

Whereas, a person who supports the ideas of the pp, must be credible, despite that commentator having said and/or misogynistic and frankly shameful things themselves. As long as they hold the correct (group-think) beliefs.

It has been such a common theme of late it has been comical to see who they propose as ‘authorities with credibility.’

doublehalo · 27/03/2021 10:26

'People all over the internet say....'

That's fab then. No need for you to think about anything. Just parrot some other dumbo who also hasn't read what JKR wrote.

And why is Christianity the only religion that it's ok to bitch about?

Rules for Thee but not for Me

NotBadConsidering · 27/03/2021 10:38

Fewer than 5% of the world’s population is on Twitter. More than 80,000 people “liked” her “people who menstruate” tweet.

I strongly suspect there are no more than 10,000 vocal antagonists on Twitter who think she’s transphobic.
