New Reddit employee Aimee Knight (née Challenor)

Many popular Reddit pages have gone private today, protesting against what they believe to be censorship on the site. Subreddits ranging from r/Music to r/AmongUs have now become a private community due to their belief that the company is censoring mention of one of its employees, following the removal of an article mentioning former British political figure Aimee Knight (née Challenor) from the r/UKPolitics subreddit.

Over 200 subreddits have gone private as a result of Reddit’s alleged censorship, as communities with millions of followers have shuttered their doors for an indefinite period of time. When users attempt to visit one of these subreddits, they will instead be pointed to a message from user u/Blank-Cheque outlining the reasons for the protest.

I’ve just been reading about this.

Everyone is acting all ‘who the fuck is this and why haven’t they been stopped’.

Am I alone in rolling my eyes?

What I don't get about Aimee Challenor is how they just seem to keep popping up everywhere? Green, Lib Dems, now Reddit? Why do they seem to have so much power, particularly considering their father and boyfriend? It's weird.

FightingTheFoo · 24/03/2021 22:11

Been watching this all day - it's incredible.

Btw Reddit apparently recently hired a CFO because they plan to go public this year. I believe Americans are pretty small c conservative. Can't really imagine them wanting to buy stocks in a company that employed someone with so many links to paedophiles.

MarieDelaere · 24/03/2021 22:15

It's even made it into the Metro.

MoltenLasagne · 24/03/2021 22:19

What the hell? The first I heard of Challenor was their threat to launch an attack on the Bullring in 2013.

Since then Challenor has only increased in notoriety and yet somehow this isn't an impediment to getting a rare employment position moderating Reddit. Makes you wonder what does act as a blocker...

SunsetBeetch · 24/03/2021 22:19

There have been a few videos on YouTube about this. Rose of Dawn has said she's going to make one.

I don't know who this guy is, but he has 1.09 million subscribers.

StanfordPines · 24/03/2021 22:22

If they wanted to make sure they hired a cross section of the community and had lgbt representation then why the fuck did they land on Aimee. What is Aimee bringing to the party? I’m sure there are a billion trans people with actual skills etc who are not married to nonces.
It’s very damaging to the trans community.

But why is Aimee getting so high up in so many organisations when two minutes on line will show you that this is not the kind of person you want anywhere near your PR.

Juliesipadwillcallyouback · 24/03/2021 22:29

Yes, what is it about Aimee that makes them so appealing to have on board? There must be lots of trans people who have a good skill set for these sorts of roles without the... Um... Baggage!

Or just people who are right for the role and happen to be trans.....

Maybe Reddit would have been better informed if they hadn't deleted all the gender critical subreddits 🙄

Sounds like challenor is getting plenty of publicity though which is great.

porridgecake · 24/03/2021 23:08

I am sure there are lots of people in influential positions due to nothing more than having knowledge/information about other people in influential positions.

Certainly, but this is just blatant.

Just came to update that they've sacked Aimee Challenor and redditors are rejoicing

Indeed. I think the current environment encourages over confidence.

stumbledin · 25/03/2021 00:00

It doesn't explain how Aimee was already employed at RPAN(?) to begin with.

Dont they take up references, and in fact, as even old fashion stuck in the mud companies do it, why wasn't a social media search done?

By the way I wasn't aware that the thead about Julie Bindel was about this. I thought it was just them censoring something for being "transphobic" because she has written something about women's sex based rights!

Challenor has gone. Well done, redditors.

Well, it was a day ending in y!
Cwenthryth · 25/03/2021 06:34

When I started to other thread I was very unsure about mentioning AC relation to it (I did mention in the first post but kept the focus of the title on the immediate spark of users being banned for sharing Julie Bindel’s article - which btw wasn’t even about AC just mentioned the name in passing - but obviously things snowballed quickly in the last few days and now everybody knows who it’s all about anyway!

Although, we do need (I think) to keep our focus on the wider issues that this situation highlights - the censorship, lack of safeguarding practice etc, and not make it all about one person. One person is never the whole story.
