New Reddit employee Aimee Knight (née Challenor)

Many popular Reddit pages have gone private today, protesting against what they believe to be censorship on the site. Subreddits ranging from r/Music to r/AmongUs have now become a private community due to their belief that the company is censoring mention of one of its employees, following the removal of an article mentioning former British political figure Aimee Knight (née Challenor) from the r/UKPolitics subreddit.

Over 200 subreddits have gone private as a result of Reddit’s alleged censorship, as communities with millions of followers have shuttered their doors for an indefinite period of time. When users attempt to visit one of these subreddits, they will instead be pointed to a message from user u/Blank-Cheque outlining the reasons for the protest.

I do love the internet sometimes.

Jesus Christ. One ten second look at the Wikipedia page and it’s horrifying! I can’t believe Reddit could have been unaware of this even without doing much vetting.

AfternoonToffee · 25/03/2021 07:19

Oh so this was what my 13 year old was talking about last night. He was not impressed, but it was late and he generally just launches straight into the middle when telling me something (ASD) so I struggled to keep up.

Chrestomanci3 · 25/03/2021 07:23

It has now been mentioned in The Times today (apologies, cannot post a link).

AppleJane · 25/03/2021 07:33

How many more Aimees are there working for these organisations whose names we don't know? You're labelled a conspiracy nut if you start to talk of rings and networks but I just don't see how this person can obtain these roles alone. It stinks #itneverhappens

StanfordPines · 25/03/2021 07:35

Reading about it on Reddit there are so many trans people who are shocked that this person is being seen as representing them. And they are right to be shocked and upset.
We have been saying this for years but whenever we mention it there were cries of transphobia and no one listened.
And Reddit are saying ‘oh sorry, we didn’t vet her properly.’ What, you couldn’t use Google for 2 seconds?

oldwomanwhoruns · 25/03/2021 07:51

And all the Stonewall policies which are guiding the actions of our civil service, our police etc were written under the rule of someone whom Reddit now agrees is not even fit to be a moderator.

Can we get the gvmt to revisit all these policies and guidance, and quickly? Before more people get hurt?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 25/03/2021 08:14

Nobody is buying the "we didn't get them properly" excuse. Reddit obviously knew about Challenor's background or they wouldn't have started the automatic modding rule deleting and banning any mention of Challenor at the start of March.
Now they have to clean house as I bet Challenor isn't the only one with a past that can be described as "murky".

CigarsofthePharoahs · 25/03/2021 08:15

Get? Vet!

porridgecake · 25/03/2021 08:18

I think it is pretty clear that Aimee and Reddit are pawns, not the master. The master(s) have been discussed many times on FWR. What is really difficult is how to shine light on the whole picture, such is the level of collusion/ capture. It is depressing.

Lordamighty · 25/03/2021 08:20

AC will be the tip of the iceberg as far as Reddit mods/admins go, there is already a lot of discussion about others.
Just came to update that they've sacked Aimee Challenor and redditors are rejoicing
www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/mcisdf/an_update_on_the_recent_issues_surrounding_a/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
There are numerous claims in the comments that Challenor's partner is a mod on the teen forums.

NecessaryScene1 · 25/03/2021 08:31

Aimee's partner is far more powerful as a Reddit mod than Aimee was. Moderator of "lesbian" forums and head mod of r/LGBT.

Some groups that are able to have already booted them, but as head mod cannot be touched apart from by admins.

(Which in turn was why Aimee becoming a mod was a huge deal - gave them the power to directly push people out in favour of people like their partner).

NecessaryScene1 · 25/03/2021 08:31

Aarrgh - "Aimee becoming an admin was a huge deal", I mean.

I understand that if someone hasn’t got a conviction then it is hard to pick things up by background check but why provide this level of protection and clout to someone when this information is so freely available in mainstream press?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2021 09:03

I don't think it's in the app version, not sure if this link from the browser version will be paywalled

I've found it in the app now - just a short piece, presumably written before the denouement

I've been looking at Aimee's LinkedIn to try and work out what her special talents are that make her so attractive to employers. I wonder if these people will want to rethink their endorsement at some point.

"Insightful and mature perspective". Hmmm.

littlbrowndog · 25/03/2021 13:31

Yes sunset. I see the irony there totally

StillFemale · 25/03/2021 13:56

Isn’t it interesting how quickly Reddit react when men protest..

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2021 14:11

If someone really wanted to help challenor, I'd suggest finding them a nice quiet techy job doing something completely uncontroversial. They might need to do some formal training.
