Are they Gender Critical or not?

OP posts:
persistentwoman · 21/03/2021 22:29

They had one job - and they blew it.

LoveCauliflowerCheese · 21/03/2021 22:32

(Sorry that's a stupid question!)

But if not then honestly what is the point of them?

OP posts:
NewAndImprovedNorks · 21/03/2021 22:34

They make me so cross.
“Stand up for women” is the whole point of them, and they blew it

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 21/03/2021 22:34

Nope Hmm

Soontobe60 · 21/03/2021 22:36

They are of the TWAW stance.

gardenbird48 · 21/03/2021 22:36

@LoveCauliflowerCheese

(Sorry that's a stupid question!)

ummmm.....

they are about as helpful to women as the 50:50 Campaign imo Hmm

(the one that platforms people to speak for women who have extremely limited experience of being a woman)

There is no point whatsoever in a women's party which cannot define the women they seek to champion and defend. They're currently highlighting the impact of Covid on women, but fail to explicitly say this is because of women's reproductive capacity and caring responsibilities (which is not the same as the things that affect transwomen - that should be ok and sayable). They are highlighting women's vulnerability to male violence and rape, both in the domestic sphere and without, this is because of men's physical strength and male socialisation. If the only women's party cannot speak of biological differences, for fear of insulting a tiny minority of its potential base, then it makes itself irrelevant before it has even gained sufficiently widespread national attention.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/03/2021 22:51

My thread might help answer your questions, OP.

The Big Lie - how the WEP was always about gender rather than sex www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4058470-the-big-lie-how-the-wep-was-always-about-gender-rather-than-sex

LoveCauliflowerCheese · 21/03/2021 22:54

So very disappointing.

OP posts:
NiceGerbil · 21/03/2021 22:55

No and they are very wishy washy generally as well.

A huge disappointment.

Excellent post Rabbit Flowers

It's a party ostensibly for and about women which prioritises the wishes of men who would like to be women.

I was a founding member and still have my card as a salutary reminder of what women behind kind leads to.

MarieDelaere · 21/03/2021 23:03

I won't be voting for them, no.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 21/03/2021 23:04

Thanks Persistent 😊

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 21/03/2021 23:06

The WEP is a total waste of time. Very disappointing.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/03/2021 23:14

They're a disappointing irrelevance.

NiceGerbil · 21/03/2021 23:18

Just looked at their site.

They've been a few threads on 'white feminism' recently and how the focus is narrow and doesn't consider the needs/ experiences of lots of women.

I've posted on those threads my opinion but tbh I tend to just post on here, read the news (and try to find stuff outside the UK Al Jazeera is good) to see what women are facing around the world.

That's it really.

Just looked at WEP home page:

'About the Women's Equality Party
Equality for women isn't a women's issue. When women fulfill their potential, everyone benefits. Equality means better politics, a more vibrant economy, a workforce that draws on the talents of the whole population and a society at ease with itself.'

Wow.

So economy and jobs (yes they matter and there is plenty to discuss from a feminist perspective) and some vague nice sounding words and... That's it?

Fucking hell.

Ok now I know the sort of thing the posters complaining about white feminism are talking about.

How utterly fucking useless.

This is the kind of thing I used to post on the internet, aged 19, because I thought the key to helping women across the world was getting men on side. My reasoning was that if I got men on side then they wouldn't feel threatened by the word feminism and then wouldn't disrupt threads on DV and would support feminist initiatives.

In retrospect, using a female-dominated site like mumsnet and seeing older women handling "so why isn't this site called dadsnet" threads in aibu without apologising to the men was incredibly good for me. No wonder people hate mumsnet.

NiceGerbil · 22/03/2021 01:24

These people are supposed to be grown ups though.

They aren't 19.

PotholeHellhole · 22/03/2021 01:33

I know. It's embarrassing.

NiceGerbil · 22/03/2021 01:41

Just remembered and checked.

I did a levels with one of their v senior people.

She was always a bit of a dick tbh.

EdgeOfACoin · 22/03/2021 06:02

They're having a consultation on what a 'woman' is.

It's not a great look for a party called The Women's Equality Party.

RedDogsBeg · 22/03/2021 11:02

@EdgeOfACoin

Oh dear, wonder what prompted that, all the recent court cases, the fact that the demographic they are supposed to be advocating for aren't flocking to them and they are a busted flush?

What's the betting that the consultation will come back with A woman is anyone who says they are a women and so hasten their embarrassing slide into obscurity for which women will be blamed. Get ready for shouts of "See we set up a party for women and women weren't interested, it's women's fault they have no representation."

NiceGerbil · 22/03/2021 11:52

So their aim is lots of nice jobs for everyone.

Fair enough.
