Is anyone else genuinely fearful that their GC views will become public and they will face disciplinary in their job?

I’ve just had a frantic panic where I stupidly followed a link from my Twitter account to sign up for a professional webinar giving my work email address. It would not take anyone any time to link my GC Twitter views to my work.

Can’t believe how stupid I was!

But it’s crazy. I’m sat here panicking that I could face being sacked or receiving a serious ticking off (publicly) because I want women’s views and voices to be heard.

Now I know it’s unlikely to happen (I’ve deactivated my account) as it would take some effort. And I don’t know if the link to signing up to the Webinar would link it to my Twitter account.

Am I the only one who genuinely is fearful of their views coming out?

Also I’m sorry I’m not as brave as other women and men who are openly public about their GC views. I just love my job.

Not only you. I have had furtive, coded conversations with a couple of close colleagues, so I know I’m not alone.

But the issue is always when people who are new to the debate wade in with poor understanding

OhDear2200 · 20/03/2021 18:06

@Springchickpea not spoken to anyone at work but I’ve notice the recent ‘guidance’ on adding pronouns to our emails has quietly been ignored by all my team mates.

I'm so sorry, OP. I know that I would almost undoubtedly lose work over it. May already have done so.

bourbonne · 20/03/2021 18:13

No, but then I don't work for a large company or public sector org with an LGBT network or Stonewall membership (and I now never would - funny how the word "inclusivity" works out in practice). I can't imagine that my company's leadership would fail to understand the issue even if they hadn't given it much thought yet. I suppose it helps that I don't have a public-facing role at all.

Never, ever use a 3rd party app to sign into something. That's basic security advice - I don't know if you saw this ID theft thread that caused some problems recently for a MNer (looks like it was because she used a FB app to sign onto something).

The above said, if the above was just a link from Twitter rather than logging-in with the app that's different (the above still stands).

OhDear2200 · 20/03/2021 18:43

@EmbarrassingAdmissions oh God I know! Don’t know what I was thinking.

It is an established organisation, say for example “Gardners Alliance” webinar on how to teach people to weed. It was a link to get a ticket for a webinar.

Feel such an idiot.

What's GC?

Scepticaltank · 20/03/2021 18:50

What have you done that is gross misconduct OP? Its usually theft, violence, assault, sexual harassment or something equally severe, to justify sacking. Signing up for a webinar doesn't qualify, sorry.

A ticking off? I would laugh if anyone in work with tried to give me a "ticking off" for anything. Dear me, its work, not the playground.

gardenbird48 · 20/03/2021 18:50

It is so scary isn't it? Thankfully I am self-employed but I had a major panic when I liked a gc post on social media from an account that had my business name on it. I had to shout to the kids to help me delete it Hmm. Now I am totally locked down and anon as much as poss.

I have a family member who works for a major woke company who has felt that he genuinely can't say anything when his daughter was bumped out of a championship squad in her sport by a biological male who was allowed to compete with the girls.

This major injustice has happened (and is likely to happen again) to his daughter and he cannot speak out because he feels that his job is at risk. How wrong is that??

OhDear2200 · 20/03/2021 18:55

@Scepticaltank

Genuinely if my views came out they are ‘against’ our code of conduct.

What I mean by a ticking off is an investigation into my conduct and it being on my record.

Don’t you believe this would happen? Because there are many examples of it happening.

Scepticaltank · 20/03/2021 18:55

Yup, I think I would be disgusted that my dad was so timid.

Scepticaltank · 20/03/2021 18:56

What views are against your code of conduct?

OhDear2200 · 20/03/2021 18:58

Thank you for the supportive comments

I work at a Stonewall champion. I tread very carefully.

BellsaRinging · 20/03/2021 19:02

Yup. My organisation is super-woke. My views would not be acceptable to them.

bourbonne · 20/03/2021 19:03

That must be maddening. Really hope the tide is turning and this stuff will be challenged more, loosening the grip. It does feel like with each legal victory, a few new pronouns sprout, so it may be two steps forward, one back... But if challenged, you've got a few solid verdicts and examples to lean on.

ValancyRedfern · 20/03/2021 19:37

I'm very open about my views at work (a school). I have had some disagreements with another member of staff but nothing disciplinary. Most people haven't thought about it much but when they do they agree with me. We're not a Stonewall Champion School though.

I do think if we all started speaking up it would make a difference; we would start finding allies we didn't know we're there, and also find other people agree with us when it's out in the open. I know it's not that simple though if you're scared of losing your job.

Erkrie · 20/03/2021 19:40

No not anymore. I work for a university and have decided enough is enough. So if there's an opportunity to slide in my thoughts, then I do so. I did used to be worried. But I have every right to my opinions and speaking the truth. If they tried to push me out as a result of that I would certainly take legal action. I will no longer lie.

Scepticaltank · 20/03/2021 19:44

How do you lose your job though? Walk me through the disciplinary procedure that starts with an employee registering for a webinar and ends with sacking for gross misconduct?

I genuinely think it would be helpful for all the feminists scared into silence to understand how this happens and what is written down in your company policies that sets out that this is going to happen.

Or is it more feminist to simply write here about how terrified everyone should be?

Viviennemary · 20/03/2021 19:50

You shouldn't be using your works email for any kind of personal stuff. I thought everyone knew that.
