SerendipityJane, the UK passed the Equal Pay Act in 1970. We didn’t join the EU until 1973. So I don’t think you can give them the credit!

Yes, the EPA came in 1970. However it took a court case to the European Courts to flag up some serious deficiencies in the UKs law and the UKs obligations under the EEC treaty. (I think it was to do with pensions ..). I'm not a lawyer but a European and I know that it was one of the first cases where the Law Lords held that since parliament signed the EEC treaty, in cases where the treaty conflicted with existing law, EEC law too precedent.

I'm tired and frankly cba to try and recall the names. It was 1975 I think. The one thing I do know is a lot of Brexiteers were eagerly looking forward to dumping it so that we could go back to (their words) "paying women what they're worth". A sentiment I think we could all agree Nadine Dorries would be first to champion.
