Apparently.

Nadine Dorries: low pay for nurses OK as their husbands pay will make up for it

@PurpleWh1teGreen

I assume Ms D would be happy to be an unpaid MP then so that her male colleagues can support their wives.
I don't think anyone on this thread gets it yet.

Ms. Dorries does not include herself in her pronouncements on what you should do. Why should she ?

That's why she can spout this guff without a hint of self awareness. It doesn't apply to her. And when you stop to think about it, you realise she's right. It doesn't.

GrimDamnFanjo · 11/03/2021 15:53

Isnt she a former nurse?

PurpleMustang · 11/03/2021 15:54

So in her world all nurses are women with partners. So non are single women, single mums, male nurses. Oh and none definitely where both partners work for NHS. Right

SerendipityJane · 11/03/2021 16:00

@Meredithgrey1

Why bother paying any women anything then.
I hear a penny dropping;

many decades ago, female teachers weren’t allowed to keep their jobs if they got married.
My DM worked in the civil service, and didn't get married until she was in her 30s. She was livid that she had to give up her job. She got a lump sum as a "marriage gratuity".

But what was ND's exact quote?

Meredithgrey1 · 11/03/2021 16:04

@SerendipityJane I was being sarcastic

mouldygrapes · 11/03/2021 16:06

Not the quote but this is what I could find

It is remarkable that today, in 2021 in the real world, Health Minister Nadine Dorries told BBC Radio 4 Women's Hour (23 mins 20 in) that a nurse manager of a vaccination centre told her "we have two children in our house; there are two of us: two wages coming in and one mortgage going out. If we had to choose between my husband being furloughed until the autumn or a pay rise, I would choose e my husband being furloughed any day because now we have the security that our mortgage can be paid".
The Health Minister went on to say that furlough for nurses' partners was the justification for making the NHS pay offer only 1%

Meredithgrey1 · 11/03/2021 16:06

But what was ND's exact quote?

She was talking about how nurses would have partners, and so they’d rather the government keep the furlough scheme which these partners could benefit from, than have an NHS pay rise.

Don't snipe at me. Snipe at the people who would see your suggestion as a pretty good one. Plenty of those in the UK. Starting with Nadine Dorries.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 11/03/2021 16:08

Mea Culpa Serindipity of course. It's about other people.

Meredithgrey1 · 11/03/2021 16:18

@SerendipityJane I wasn’t sniping. I was clarifying. Your response to my comment was that you thought you heard a penny dropping. I was making it clear that my comment was not a genuine question about why do we bother paying women at all.

MingeofDeath · 11/03/2021 16:19

@ Disgusted

Slight derail, but are you THE Disgusted of Manchester who posts on the Times comments section?

Iceskatingfan · 11/03/2021 17:07

I’m genuinely so gobsmacked that a current MP in this day and age would say this!! And some people think that feminism has no battles left to be fought.

ChattyLion · 11/03/2021 17:09

WTF. Nadine Dorries is not just any random MP, she is a junior HEALTH MINISTER... what are the RCN saying about this?

SerendipityJane · 11/03/2021 17:10

Not sure how anyone can be shocked. Or even surprised.

Who - who the fuck - imagined we lived in a country where this couldn't happen ?

(I've put both my arms down, for the record).

Just when you think you've seen it all, this kind of breathtakingly moronic and offensive comment appears, bringing you back to reality with a bump.

SerendipityJane · 11/03/2021 17:20

@ChattyLion

WTF. Nadine Dorries is not just any random MP, she is a junior HEALTH MINISTER... what are the RCN saying about this?
What does it matter ? The only place it seems it's being discussed is here and Twitter. Not in the real world.

@Gerla

She won't mind taking a pay cut then.
This.
fallfallfall · 11/03/2021 17:24

very 1950's view sadly.
so few people marry and judging by MN so few consider their income as joint.

toomanyspiderplants · 11/03/2021 17:26

@Beamur

Same Nadine Dorries that didn't realise leaving the EU meant that the UK would no longer have European MP's. She must represent a seat so safe they could put up a stuffed toy and still win.
Sadly her seat is extremely safe
Babdoc · 11/03/2021 17:29

SerendipityJane, the UK passed the Equal Pay Act in 1970. We didn’t join the EU until 1973. So I don’t think you can give them the credit!

AlexaShutUp · 11/03/2021 17:31

Surely women's earnings are just pocket money, no? I don't know why all those nurses are bothering their pretty little heads about such trivial issues. I'm sure that, if they ask nicely, their husbands will be happy to top up their housekeeping money.

Hmm
fallfallfall · 11/03/2021 17:32

@AlexaShutUp "pin money"

Thelnebriati · 11/03/2021 17:33

What women really need is a nice little part time job, to keep them busy until the kiddies arrive.

AlexaShutUp · 11/03/2021 17:34

@fallfallfall yes exactly.
