Gov't Equality Adviser quits.

Cailleach1 · 11/03/2021 00:43

So, this person quits. Sounds like a bit of an ideologue who didn't get carte blanche, I think. Gave the usual spiel which makes it clear they are only about the T.

"I don’t believe that they understand LGBT people, particularly trans people."

I don't think their remit was only to be the Trans Adviser. Have they nothing to say about equality in relation to any other group of people? Disability, race, belief, SEX, childbirth and maternity, etc. etc. They talk as if anyone who isn't a trans ideology is a right wing evangelical; usual attempts to smear there. Oddly enough, many regard the trans ideology as rather anti-gay when it puts lesbians under pressure to regard their sexuality as not being related to sex. That is why alternative LGB organisations are having to be set up in so many countries. A big cuckoo has taken over their nest.

I'd imagine it is good riddance and don't let the door hit your bum on the way out. They don't seem to have any interest in equality per se; never mind balancing different rights. Only about entrenching this single ideology.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have an Equality Adviser who took a broader view than Trans activism?

It would make a most refreshing change to finally get an equality advisor who was passionate about equality for all protected characteristics.

Can't say I feel anything but relief that Grima Wormtongue has decided to leg it.

Melroses · 11/03/2021 01:17

The job ends on the 31st - a bit of a rush to get the resignation in on time Grin

NiceGerbil · 11/03/2021 03:06

I think it's going to be a bumpy ride.

The approach when this started coming to the fore more was to piggyback onto existing causes. First LGB (trans is not a sexuality) then women's rights. Both of these groups are starting to say, hold on a minute.

Also have co-opted DSD as somehow linked to trans identities (even with pushback from the start). The comparisons with segregation in the USA are particularly offensive.

The fact that there is really starting to be pushback means they will pull all the stops out, whatever that looks like.

DaisyWaldron · 11/03/2021 04:56

I don't know why you are saying she's all about the T - I've been following her on social media for years as a lesbian activist in church circles fighting against religious discrimination against lesbians, gay men and bisexual people. She's never been an advocate for just trans people.

Who are these “right wing evangelicals” that are always mentioned? Most of the groups I follow that campaign for LGB rights and representation apart from T, and women’s sex-based rights, are led by prominent left/TU/Labour and ex-Labour activists, or politically undeclared. There are a few notable exceptions (and as feminism should be fighting for every woman, even those with whom we disagree - what is that quote? - obviously that is fine!) but ‘evangelicals’? It sounds like someone c&p’ing something from the USA. Is there even a significant Christian evangelical movement in the U.K. at all, let alone one that is lobbying the govt on LGB or transgender rights issues? Who are they?

Tibtom · 11/03/2021 07:15

Evangelicals in the uk vary - most will be nothing like those from the US right. Many would be very much on the left. But they generally hold very much to the bible - which means whilst they think gays and lesbians are very much children of God and to be loved like anyone else, homosexual sex is a sin (as is heterosexual sex outside marriage) and that marriage is only between a man and a woman. So, in other words, very unlikely to be funding any LGB groups. Z

Tibtom · 11/03/2021 07:18

But surely this amounts to 'stirring up hatred on the basis of religion' so a hate crime?

oldwomanwhoruns · 11/03/2021 07:20

What on earth did the gvmt think it was doing, employing this person with any sort of Equalities brief?

If a person is to advise on Equalities why choose an obviously one-issue person?
We wimmin can tell
Actually, anyone could tell, looking at the pictures on a quick google Sad

Tibtom · 11/03/2021 07:22

I think they sat on an LBGT panal?

SultanaSofa · 11/03/2021 07:27

Just heard James Morton being interviewed on the Today programme about this. Lots of sighing and repeated statements about the government not understanding/ listening to the trans community (especially the young ones), I didn't hear a concrete explanation of what led to the resignations. Would have been good if the BBC could have included an interview with FPFW/ Transgender Trend etc for balance.

justawoman · 11/03/2021 07:33

If you mean that Jayne Ozanne is trans - she definitely isn’t. She’s a lesbian (the old-fashioned female kind). She comes from an extremely conservative Christian background and spent years being told she needed to exorcise the ‘sin’ of her lesbianism and going through various thoroughly nasty and abusive attempts at conversion therapy for it. She now campaigns vehemently (and I would say somewhat misguidedly in her methods) for LGBT equality in the church and beyond. She’s another Ruth Hunt type - an actual lesbian who’s drunk the coolaid on trans rights. But it’s unfair and untrue to state or imply she’s not a woman.

AppleJane · 11/03/2021 07:38

She's on GMB right now and used the phrase 'same sex attracted' and not coming across as all about the T tbf.

AppleJane · 11/03/2021 07:40

I take that back, she's now saying trans are right at the heart of it.

Didn't imply anything of the kind.

I didn’t mean you

AppleJane · 11/03/2021 07:43

I think justawoman was referring to a pp talking about google images.

I was reacting to oldwomanwhoruns:

Crossed posts, AppleJane

WeAreJackieWeaver · 11/03/2021 07:47

I heard James Morton too. In brief they said Liz Truss is a meanie and won’t do the things we want.

What these activists don’t realise is there a conversation to be had in government about their demands. Sometimes they are reasonable demands and sometimes they aren’t, but LT not agreeing with them doesn’t mean she’s not interesting in LGBT rights, it’s just she’s listened and disagreed to some of their points. Grown ups know this, childish activists don’t.

AppleJane · 11/03/2021 07:48

I'll be honest, I did look her up while watching GMB because I wasn't sure but then I realised she was as you described her Justawoman.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 11/03/2021 07:49

Further discussion about this on this thread. The roles were due to come to an end this month:

Govt LGBT+ advisors quit - criticising Liz Truss www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4188623-govt-lgbt-advisors-quit-criticising-liz-truss

Cailleach1 · 11/03/2021 07:51

Actually, even if she was on the LGB T panel, she shows no awareness of

(i)what is happening to children (who are effectively being 'converted' by being told they need to change their bodies) and
(ii)Lesbians who being deemed bigoted when they make clear that they are same sex attracted an not same 'gender identity' attracted.

No outcry about that!

Even if their remit is only LGB and T, any decent person would acknowledge the rights of others need to also be balanced.

Griefmonster · 11/03/2021 07:54

Have you linked to the wrong article and interview clip? She is talking about her frustration on lack of action on banning conversion therapy. That was the final straw for her. Doesn't mention centering T

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 11/03/2021 08:04

I think this is more about Liz Truss than anything. There have been repeated calls for her to go. The main frustration is her stance on the trans issue. Both her and James Morton have singled out Liz Truss. Crispin Blunt has previously gone for her as has Stonewall's chair. They want her out of the equalities role. We know this is motivated by wider frustrations around self-ID etc. I may be being cynical but it has long been a tactic to tag trans issues to wider lgb lobbying when they are not always compatible. Action on gay conversion therapy is presumably stalling because it's been complicated by the addition of trans people.
