Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The cognitive dissonance from 'TWAW' women

I've seen a few things today on social media which got me thinking: How do "liberal" feminists square up the argument that being a women is a feeling vs the experience we all know?

  1. The awful disappearance of Sarah Everard has led to an outpouring on twitter of women highlighting how they are essentially bound by a curfew all the time (and not just when the police "helpfully suggest" it) and feel the fear of being followed/harassed/assaulted by men in public constantly.

  2. Kamala Harris posted a video on Instagram about the 2.5million women how have left the workforce in the US (similar stats on Guardian about the UK) and it's driven by women being in lower paid work and not having access to childcare when schools close.

  3. This scene from Fleabag appeared on my Facebook feed where Kristin Scott Thomas gives a powerful speech about how women are constantly affected by their bodies through the start of menstruation to menopause. Lots of positive articles from the time it aired:

And yet these same women would call others bigots for saying biology matters and instead that feelings are more important to being a woman than anything else?
That to dislike finding myself in an enclosed public space with someone visibly male is phobic, and that our reproductively system has a huge impact in our lives and why women are still discriminated against?

Argh. I'm just sick of being the only one in my friends group that seems to see the hypocrisy.
They say JKR is a nasty transphobe but equally complain about the patriarchy and how childcare costs put women put of work Hmm

If you feel you need a [some] qualifier before the word men, I personally think you're very much part of the problem.

What's the cinematic term for this? Where women's roles are largely supporting and the lines that they have are to move the men's roles forward?

So every discussion around this has to include qualifiers and centre someone's concerns that are other than your own or those related to the topic.

It's built-in disruption before a topic even begins to be aired. It's wretched.

Are you meaning the Bechdel Test, Embarrassing?

Ignoring crime statistics showing that transwomen are just as likely to be sex/ violent offenders as any other group of males can perhaps be understood if they are taken in by the gaslighting of TRAs who pretend that female crime is just as serious as male crime. However, when it comes to transwomen competing against female athletes, they are then actually denying what they can see with their own eyes and this I find mind blowing.

Back up a sec.

Did someone say that the risk of pregnancy as a result of rape should never be mentioned because it's offensive to infertile women???!!!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/03/2021 16:45

Watched the PP video. Extraordinarily powerful, she's at her best and most articulate when she's angry.

Yes, thank you.

I'm part of so many food conversations that I couldn't get bechamel out of my head (but knew it wasn't that).

Warning: you are in danger of derailing with recipes 😊

@Rubidium

twitter.com/gracepetrie/status/1370362995721789444 So close to getting it. SO close.
One of the responses (seemingly by a man or former male) : "Good thing I don’t identify as a bloke anymore so I’m no potential threat"

Can you imagine if you felt scared of a male- bodied person only to find out they didn't identify as male? Awk-ward!

334bu · 14/03/2021 17:22

I know there was talk that it might have been staged but does anyone have link for the man in female toilet telling women to get lost because he was a woman?

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 14/03/2021 17:40

does anyone have link for the man in female toilet telling women to get lost because he was a woman?

Do you mean Eddie Izzard bragging about scaring two teenage girls who challenged him for being in the women’s toilet?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/03/2021 17:44

Or our Canadian friend?

Or that sword carrying one?

Or the one that chased an 11 year old girl, until she reached her dad outside?

Or the one in a supermarket?

Or any one if the others I can't immediately recollect?

CardinalLolzy · 14/03/2021 17:44

I know the link you mean, it's nothing to do with Izzard. Looked pretty setup and not any different to the brief conversation you might imagine would happen if you assumed a tw in a ladies' loo was male.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/03/2021 17:45

Oh! Maybe you mean the man, dressed as a man, stood up pissing as a man, in a cubicle in the women's loos, with the door wide open.

He certainly had a lot to say for himself. And it was more recent.

MaudTheInvincible · 14/03/2021 17:51

Yes NiceGerbil, someone very much did say that.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/03/2021 17:52

@MaudTheInvincible

Yes NiceGerbil, someone very much did say that.
And went on to defend it too!

Yes there was much talk about it being staged and little talk about how this could really happen.

I saw that one. When challenged he said ‘how do you know I’m not a transgender’ (his words).

I think he illustrates the problem precisely. He may or may not be ‘a transgender’ but he knows that male people are now unlikely to be challenged by security staff for using the women’s toilets. He fancies using the women’s toilets for some reason so feels perfectly entitled in going in there regardless of the feelings of the women. He may or may not be a predator at this point - who knows?

My teenage DD is going to a concert for her birthday treat (when restrictions are lifted obvs) - if this venue is one whose door/security staff have been trained by a Stonewalled organisation and annoying young men feel that they are entitled to go into the ladies for whatever reason there is likely to be a problem.

Many shopping centre/pub/bar/club staff are now told that if they see a man go into the ladies they are to assume he is a transwoman and entitled to be in there (I can’t find the link now but a major door/security staff regulator had this approach). If they ignore that instruction and the man claims to be trans they could lose their job.

Can we see any potential problems with that?
