Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

US "left"'s mask increasingly slipping

Saw this via Ovarit, and it's quite jaw-dropping.

This is some reasonably-high profile American YouTuber/streamer called Vaush - I don't think he's particularly mainstream in what passes for the "left" there, but he is certainly part of it.

Here he is reacting to some video featuring Selina Soule - Connecticut student athlete who's fighting a legal battle for female-only sports.

And - oh my god. You do associate this sort of thing with America, but 20-30 years ago it would have been some right-wing shock jock type like Rush Limbaugh.

Now some on the "left" sound... exactly like that.

I offer this as maybe a companion piece to the other thread "Does anyone ever have a "are we the baddies" moment?"

@nauticant

If you want to know why these people make these videos, apart from indulging in hatred and getting supported for doing it, it's because of the money:

socialblade.com/youtube/channel/UC1E-JS8L0j1Ei70D9VEFrPQ

If you watch the way the money comes in you can see that once someone starts doing this, they need to keep the hatred flowing. That's their business model and it's youtube's too.

Over £200K a year to be a complete douchbag!?
nauticant · 20/03/2021 13:16

Yes Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud, douchbag creates videos of hatred, uploads them to youtube, they attract lots of views which translates into advertising revenue, youtube takes most of the money passing on a portion to the douchbag, and as a result youtube makes money from distributing hatred and ensures that the generators of the hatred get their cut.

MadameKali · 20/03/2021 13:18

I can't even watch that to the end. What kind of grown ass man speaks like that about a female high school student??

The sheer vitriol is jaw dropping. Fuuuuuck.

HeadPain · 20/03/2021 19:17

I've come across men like this who jump to defend transwomen and let all of their hate towards women flow out. One said that women/feminists (GC feminists) hate men so much that we still hate men "even when they cut their d*ck off", that's still "not good enough" for us. So a MRA, incel thing.
(Let's just ignore that most don't even have that op)

HeadPain · 20/03/2021 19:19

To clarify my post, it's not just an incel thing

HeadPain · 20/03/2021 19:40

E.g. There's a movement called "MGTOW" , I'm not sure if people here know about it, Google it if not.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men_Going_Their_Own_Way

I don't know how reddit really works so I'm not sure what wiki page means about their page being quarantined, I don't know if their reddit is still there to view, when I looked at it (or a similar one) before it was very disturbing the way they hated and viewed women.

There are probably things written about it if we search online, don't know how much. I can't remember where I first read about it. There was another such movement and reddit sub mentioned, but I can't remember now.

PigeonPants · 20/03/2021 19:52

That's a virulent misogynist, straight up. I don't care if he calls himself "left", he's against liberty and equality and equity and he hates women as a group. He can fuck off.

And it has nothing to do with transwomen or trans people in general (who generally do not agree with this kind of nonsense; it's always some wildly sexist and rape apologist non-trans "ally" pushing it). He's just a pernicious sexist that wants to occlude or remove women's rights. And while he primarily hates and targets women, he also will make trans people collateral damage in his anti-woman campaign.

How such arseholes gained such influence across political parties UK- and US- wide is the question we should be asking. The parties who say they are left/for equality and yet show their woman-hating arses to the world are the ones who should be reviled, not women trying to speak for women. Vote those parties the fuck out!

MedusasBrandyButter · 20/03/2021 20:14

Wow. Such frenetic hatred is going to give him a heart attack. Some of the audio was clearly speeded up for effect (so he could mock the high-pitched voice, which he faked), but he's seriously gabbling as though he's out of breath and having palpitations.

Unhealthy mind in an unhealthy body. Ugh.

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 20/03/2021 20:16

He (Vaush) also claims to be an expert on Judith Butler... Curiouser and curiouser...

@nauticant the whole thing stinks. He gets excited at being able to curse and slur women.

Childrenofthestones · 20/03/2021 20:51

On the bright side, that's a nice basement his mum has.🙂

Delphinium20 · 20/03/2021 21:11

That is so vile...but just listening to him use words like cunt and bitch tells me he can never be mainstream left. Never. The word cunt is sooo bad that when Americans hear UK people use it, it's a total cringe even though we know you don't have the same intensity behind it.

Frankly, I love that I can write "fuck" in a sentence on MN...there are few mainstream social media group in the US where those swear words are allowed. The south in general has large amounts of people who see "cussing" as something immoral like cheating on your spouse.

Hibari · 20/03/2021 22:01

Vaush isn't even remotely respected by any lefties I know.

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 21/03/2021 07:09

@Hibari

Vaush isn't even remotely respected by any lefties I know.
Why's that?
Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 21/03/2021 07:11

He's got 100s of thousands of subscribers, so he must be giving a lot of people what they want to hear... Which is apparently hearing slurs being able to be freely given at women whilst feeling righteous.

NecessaryScene1 · 21/03/2021 07:16

Yes, I don't think anyone's saying this is like the mainstream Democratic party or anything.

We're just suggesting that all the "lefties" who go on and on about right-wing "hate" and "extremists" might like to look at the beam in their own eye rather than seeking the mote in others'.

This is happening openly on the left, and apparently some can't manage disapproval beyond "not remotely respected". I've heard harsher criticism of Chomsky.

Yes I knew that and was ready to comment if people disingenuously said it wasn't that bad, which I thought they might.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/03/2021 09:12

Can't bring yourself to condemn the unhinged misogyny of a popular leftist YouTuber and his leftist fans, Hibari? I know plenty of his ilk exist on the left as I've come across them abusing women they don't agree with on social media.

Xpectations · 21/03/2021 09:15

@WarOnWomen

I'm torn between wanting to view for my own evidence and not wanting to give him clicks. I think I shall believe you lot as I don't want to add to his views.
King Critical reacts to his videos so you can watch both his videos and KC’s GC-influenced response.
Delphinium20 · 21/03/2021 16:34

I agree there is the left's brand of misogyny. I might have supported Bernie Sanders as I felt he shared a lot of my politics, but interacting with Bernie Bros back during the Hillary Clinton campaign reminded me why I couldn't stomach them. It went beyond the run of the mill mansplaining - many used veiled rhetoric that was often threatening.

This paper may result it's own thread- but the title! I think that it is a good analysis of incels

@headpain

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 22/03/2021 21:46

Hope writing the title is allowed:

"“I Don’t Hate All Women, Just Those Stuck-Up Bitches”: How Incels and Mainstream Pornography Speak the Same Extreme Language of Misogyny"

From the paper:

"Lewis et al. (2017) have highlighted further similarities between offline violence and online abuse against women, such as the fact that both have the effect of instilling fear into women, and silencing them, especially through the threat of sexualized violence, but also through exclusion, disdain, or discrediting. This policing of women’s behavior functions as a reminder of who is in control and who dictates the boundaries within which women are free to move (Megarry, 2014), while men’s freedom remains unrestricted."
