Hasbro rebrands Mr Potato Head

Mr Potato Head is no more. He has been given a gender neutral name, he's now just plain old Potato Head.
Presumably Mrs Potato Head has been given the chop too.

I wonder what accessories they will come with now.
And I wonder what toys will be next.
Any ideas?

I don’t get it. My kids had this over 20 years ago. We bought a big bucket of ‘Mr Potato Head’, and it had several heads and heaps of accessories including things such as feminine eyes with eyelashes, lips with obvious lipstick, female handbags, feminine hats, flowers where the hat hole is etc. Branded Mr Potato Head but you could have made full on female potato heads if you wanted. No idea why they would need to rebrand......

They are just dropping the Mr from the company title. They are selling a Mr and Mrs potato head still.

And Toy Story isn't real

But it is, toys really come to life. I am always guilt ridden about the toys in the loft.

I had a Woody toy as a kid that I left out in the garden on accident. Of course it rained that night, and it ruined his talk box thingy so he started talking on his own (without us pulling his string) in a distorted, robotic manner.

I was terrified of him in the films after that and made my dad check my room before bedtime every night to make sure Woody wasn't hiding in there 😱

Can you imagine the story line for toy story 5 FFS 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've just spotted a good blog post from Debbie Cameron on this.

Main points (hastily summarised by me):

1. This is mostly about how companies are trying to score points by appearing to be on trend progressive, without that actually meaning anything in material terms.
2. The pieces provided with the Potato Head toys are still stereotypically gendered e.g. black bowler hat, pink handbag, and the change of language won't change how children play with the toys because they still inhabit a world in which gender differentiation and androcentrism are the norm.

Excellent point about guess who. How do those who insist being a man or a woman is all about the feelings play that do we think?

Concern over, actually makes sense in a way, given they do Mrs Potato Head and Mr Potato Head.
