50:50 Parliament Campaign to Encourage Women in Politics now have TWO Transwomen on the Panel

I saw 50:50 women tweet to Sue Pascoe Chair of the Conservative Women’s Organisation some time ago on their #askhertostand, but then I couldn’t find the tweet and thought maybe they’d realised their mistake (can you guess?) and deleted it.

However, how wrong I was! There are now two people that have extremely limited ‘lived experience’ as a female (Sue was a married father and successful businessman and Master to Foxhounds until a few years ago). The other person has said hi on here recently.

I don’t mean to be rude but surely the whole point of encouraging women to stand for Parliament is to help overcome the barriers women face in entering politics. Any barriers that trans people face are rather different. It is also interesting that on a panel of three for their ‘Encouraging LGBT+ Women to Stand’ campaign, there us only one person with actual lived experience of being a woman (I am hoping that Mandu Reid of the WEP was born female at least...??)

I have no interest in how someone else wants to define themselves; that's entirely up to them. If you try defining me as an extension of yourself then I'm going to insist you stop it, because I'm not part of you, I'm a person too with equal rights, and your autonomy stops at the end of your own body. You have autonomy but so do I. So does everyone. If you tread on other people's toes they are going to get annoyed with you and insist until you stop it. They are not mistreating you by doing this. In fact just extend to me the same values you expect from me - and we'll get along fine.

Saying no to you and claiming my own identity is not 'defining you'. Pointing out the harm you are doing in appropriating is not 'defining you'. That's a phrase being employed to distract from the real issue there. If you stop trying to define me in order to help yourself and your own intent, again, we will get along fine.

It's one thing to claim you 'feel' like a woman. It's quite another to claim to speak for people i.e. women when you've not shared that experience.
Yet another example of 'wokeness' denying women's actual experience.

ANewCreation Thank you for your insightful post. I think this thread might have degenerated into farce a little - but ANewCreation's post is definitely worth reading.

I hope Robin Moira remembers to thank Jaz for turning up here in support. I'm sure it was much appreciated.

Darcinian · 17/02/2021 12:03

Hopefully Robin is quiet because she is getting on with some work today given the tight deadlines. I genuinely hope she brings her best arguments to the upcoming court cases. Sunlight.

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/02/2021 12:03

Yes, thank you @ANewCreation for that excellent post.

RedToothBrush · 17/02/2021 12:09

Imagine Theresa May or Yvette Cooper will twitter profiles like that.

Or Liz Truss, Priti Patel, Suella Braverman, Arlene Foster, Angela Rayner, Lisa Nandy, Emily Thornberry, Stella Creasy, Leanne Wood, Nicola Sturgeon or Ruth Davison.

Do you think they'd have been invited on a village fete committee never mind any kind of parliamentary one?

I'm actually amazed that Jaz was a PPC in 2019 given the declarations and vetting the party supposedly do and when those posts date back to.

(I will check up on what the actual process of becoming a PPC for the LDs is supposed to involve shortly).

It definitely is a post that reflects my experience simply at local level.

The institutionalised sexism is appalling and raising it results in abuse.

One of my 'friends' in my close circle regularly does so. The only reason I don't tell him to fuck off to the far side of fuck is for the harmony of the group. But I'm getting closer and closer.

He is a liberal democrat councillor.

He's the single biggest sexist pig I know.

We were talking on Zoom the other week about what FB ads we all get, cos I've been having some hilarous ones lately. He admitted he had been getting ones advertising sexual services or something. None of the other men in the group had, had similar.

It did tell me a lot about his online browsing history...

The great irony is that this movement will be well and truly scuppered if men become transwomen and count towards the female figures! Or maybe they'd judge that to be a success?

Sophoclesthefox · 17/02/2021 12:29

@lifeturnsonadime

That Pink article confuses me.

So Jaz has come on here and said she is a woman (not a transwoman just a woman) , no debate, yet has left the 50/50 because she doesn't believe it supports transwomen.

That makes no sense, if she is a woman why would she need to leave the committee?

This from earlier is very succinct.

Both of these things cannot be true.

I also liked the otters.

Hilly twin skins are more durable than 1000mile socks, IME.

Bimbo pills is one of the most repellant phrases I’ve heard in a while, and I’m doubly nonplussed if it’s referring to progesterone, which for my money are far more likely to be HULKSMASHBLINDINGRAGE pills than anything else.

I'm fairly sure its in two self-declared parts - one that you don't disagree publicly with any party policies, amd two that there is.nothing in your past that could cause the party embarrassment, or bring it into disrepute.

Indeed. And when people realise that the objections to content like that is called 'transphobic', it's little wonder that the word often provokes such ridicule.

Sal Brinton of the LibDems said at a Fawcett / 50:50 event ages ago that a single-sex parliament would be fine as long as the genders were sufficiently mixed.

@Ereshkigalangcleg

We are being trampled over by people who have absolutely no connection to material reality, people who talk absolute nonsense.

These people have always existed with different beliefs. Rarely have they been pandered to and indulged to such a degree as we are seeing with this particular group of male people.

Yes, this is what terrifies and offends me. Politicians pandering to people, including groups of young men, whose idea of what it is to be a woman is like that of Andrea Long Chu even if they don't all say it quite so crassly.
