@Morred

I just can't get my head round why "menstruators" is acceptable for people who menstruate but "breastfeeders" isn't acceptable for people feeding from their breasts. If a woman can have a penis, surely men can have breasts?
I think you need to ask some of the around 400 men a year who have breast cancer in the UK.

Swim England were captured several years ago

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5357509/Swim-England-guidance-trans-swimmers-slammed.html

I believe the person at swim england who was in charge of drawing up those guidelines is now at sport england in a similar role...

littlbrowndog · 10/02/2021 12:53

The money spent on this and so many people and time on this

Where is the same money and time being put into the outcomes for black women in pregnancy and birth

@Covidcorvid

The news story has hit the daily mail now and from reading that they say it’s an extra word. So the term will now be breast or chest feeding. They will talk about woman or birthing person depending on the individual. They will add alternative phrases to their policies, etc. But they won’t remove original terms. Which seems a lot better.
If that is the case than that is fine. Deal with each individual and respect them and their wishes.
merrymouse · 10/02/2021 13:10

@prisencolinensinainciusol2

Where is this coming from?

Do we know who came up with the brilliant idea to call breast feeding "chest" feeding?

I want names.

Yes. They need to explain why it is acceptable to tell women (who are likely to be struggling after child birth, because who doesn't?) that Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust endorses both disassociation from your unmentionable female body and the idea that the concept of breastfeeding is innately disturbing.

Should you identify with wearing a pinny, cluttering up the pavement and being basic, you may tell your Health Visitor that your pronouns are she/her/breastfeeder.

Toseland · 10/02/2021 13:11

I’m so upset by this I’m almost in tears. I breastfed my child for 2.5 years as did my Mother and my Grandmothers before her.
We know this isn’t about ‘gender inclusion’ as there are already gender neutral words for breastfeeding that could be used e.g. ‘nursing’. Whomever is behind all this just want to take women’s words away and this chills me to the core. What does this mean for women in the future?
Every time I see the word ‘inclusion’ I take it to mean exclusion for women and girls.
This is pure evil and I will now fight this with everything I have. Utter bastards.

merrymouse · 10/02/2021 13:12

Deal with each individual and respect them and their wishes.

I don't think it is just about dealing with individuals though. The impression I got was that they will be talking about breastfeeding/chestfeeding in all communication - otherwise why announce a policy at all?

Nameandgamechange123 · 10/02/2021 13:15

I was also about to post this article. I'm outraged. When will people wake up. This is out of control wokery. Someone needs to stop this madness.
To the fraction of humans mad enough to make a fuss about their feelings being hurt when scientific language is used..... Please.... Please.... Sort yourself out.

littlbrowndog · 10/02/2021 13:15

These are the new words in the renamed perinatal services. I don’t even know what perinatal means and why should I. What’s wrong with maternity?

Euuurgh!
I thougt they may try to tap into the circulatory or pulmonary systems and create a new generation of vampires.

highame · 10/02/2021 13:19

We wanted sunlight, well here it is. If you're woke and thought this could all be done quietly and maybe we wouldn't notice, needs to have a bit of a re-think.

My advice, don't upset mothers or a tsunami will be on its way. Anyone who thought they were in for a quiet day in our many government departments should be having a bit of a wake up call.

Doesn't matter what the intentions were or any amount of ah but ah but. It's out now and this particular genie wont be put back in the bottle. Smile I needed cheering up, well done Brighton NHS

tinylittleyou · 10/02/2021 13:22

I’ve mentioned it on the other thread but do they still use the term ‘MSM’ at std clinics? Biological sex is also a factor in std transmission including HIV and they’ve always used that term, but it sort of becomes useless if everything is gender rather than sex

merrymouse · 10/02/2021 13:24

Some of the information in the policy is wrong/misleading.

"Some staff may voice objections towards treating trans or non-binary service users on the grounds of their religion or beliefs – this would be classed as discrimination. Managers must be prepared to deal with this in the same manner as for any other similar objection (for example on the grounds of sexual orientation), in line with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy."

This paragraph talks about discrimination, but when you actually check the Equality/Diversity and Inclusion policy:

"5.12 Providing for Cultural and Religious Needs
Where a member of staff has particular cultural and religious needs which may conflict with existing work requirements, the Trust will consider whether it is reasonably practical to vary or adapt these requirements to enable such cultural/religious needs to be met."

dottiedodah · 10/02/2021 13:26

This is beyond anything right now isnt it? Saying "Chest milk" FFS! Really stop telling midwives/women what to do .Most pregnant women and lactating women are called "Mothers to be " and Lactating Mums in my book!

QuiltingABook · 10/02/2021 13:29

chestfeeding Is that where the baby feeds on the birthing parent's liver or lungs or aorta? Sounds yum. Hmm

AMK42 · 10/02/2021 13:29

Morred, “menstruators” isn’t acceptable, at all. ONLY women menstruate, although not all do, so the word is “Women”. Men CAN’T menstruate. If they’re bleeding from their nether regions they need to see a doctor - they’re ill.

IsabellaMozzarella · 10/02/2021 13:35

I have a question, which I hope I can pose clearly. I'm currently chestfeeding my DC so up all hours.
What are they doing in countries where their language uses feminine & masculine, like in France? Or is the UK being ridiculous in isolation?

prisencolinensinainciusol2 · 10/02/2021 13:39

That is a bloody excellent point.

Who is in charge of our language these days? Creeps.

Littl- neither did I. I had to Google it. It's an umbrella word covering the ante- natal and post- natal period.

The agenda is being pushed all over Europe but I don’t the specifics of language. You’d think that the French term allaitement/allaiter would be neutral however it seems clear as with chest feeding that new “inclusive” terms are being created for the sake of differentiation whether or not they make sense.
Igneococcus · 10/02/2021 14:22

The German word for breastfeeding is "stillen", it doesn't really refer to any sex.

Trans men can mestruate.
