Wants to be the first transgender MP. Well, good luck - but will Eddie be taking a place on an all-woman shortlist?

I wonder if it would be Eddie in girl mode or Eddie in boy mode as an MP. Or perhaps it would change according to the audience or constituent issue.

HermioneWeasley · 31/01/2021 16:22

Agree, Eddie doing lots of high profile campaigning would be excellent for our cause

Less good for Eddie’s constituents should Eddie be elected though - as another poster said, being an MP isn’t exactly glamorous.

SuitedandBooted · 31/01/2021 16:48

Ah, Eddie being "girly". What an eye-opener that will be for the wider public.....

Cheers mate!

Saltovinegar · 31/01/2021 17:04

If my cat stood as the Labour candidate where I live he would be elected, it's a totally safe seat. We have a female MP as does the adjoining ward. I hope we won't be used for Eddie's political ambitions but it wouldn't surprise me.

Justhadathought · 31/01/2021 18:14

I sensed this was coming........It is all grist to the mill as far as I'm concerned.

Imnobody4 · 31/01/2021 18:17

I don't think Eddie is actually that popular in the party.

Mollyollydolly · 31/01/2021 18:24

Well we all saw that coming. Failed as a man so try again as a woman.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 31/01/2021 18:31

Colour me sgivje

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 31/01/2021 18:31

*shocked

RadandMad · 31/01/2021 18:55

Whenever I see Eddie these days I just get Magdalen Berns in my head saying 'Oh, fuck off you wanker'.

RadandMad · 31/01/2021 18:56

@JoodyBlue Maybe Eddie will take a leaf out of Pip Bunce's book and be in girl mode for some days of the week and boy mode for others.

AdaColeman · 31/01/2021 19:15

As to being an MP isn't a glamorous job, I'm sure Eddie will have the feelz that it is, so long as the right colour beret and nail varnish is worn...bright pink obviously! Wink

AlfonsoTheSensible · 31/01/2021 19:22

Eddie's platform seems to be about being trans but not any other issues. Odd, that.

Jared O'Mara was such a triumph for identity politics.

If Eddie wins a seat I would not be quick to dismiss the impact he could have.
He will make friends. He will play the game. He will do favours for favours. This is not a stupid man, this is not an idiot, or buffoon, or blue blood playing at politics.
And every politician he charms at a lunch, or fundraiser, or on committee, or over drinks etc will be one more person who feels a reluctance to put their hand up, to speak up, to be the party pooper when the hard questions need asking. It's so much easier to 'be kind'.
You don't think one disparaging tweet from a celebrity trans MP won't direct waves of vitriol towards any politician who dares to defy the mob? And it will be women, of course it will, who will bear the brunt.
IMO Eddie winning would mean self ID.

You did see him during the Referendum?

He did not go down well with the public. He had a total lack of self awareness and had a tendency to get people's backs up.

And that was people who were supposed to be 'on his side'!

OvaHere · 31/01/2021 21:06

I'm of the opinion that following the last four years people in general might be a bit more wary of electing that celeb off the telly.

RedToothBrush · 31/01/2021 21:08

Thats something I'm less convinced of tbh!
OvaHere · 31/01/2021 21:10

Red maybe I should have phrased it 'should be wary'!

donquixotedelamancha · 31/01/2021 21:16

I don't think Eddie is actually that popular in the party.

Indeed. There are seats where momentum would have the power to get Eddie elected but that wing of the party despise him as a Blairite traitor. Most moderate seats probably have the sense to block an attention seeking celeb from parachuting in.

He's talked about wanting to be an MP for some time but I'm not sure he's ever done much about it.

I think he's actually quite a pitiable creature. He's highly talented, creative and hard working but he seems unable to stick to any one career long-term or to hold down serious relationships. The way he approaches the marathons isn't healthy. I think it must be very sad to be pushing 60 and still be so driven by need (presumably at least partially related to his mum's death).

I would agree that he lacks some basic skills which would bar him from front line politics, except then I remember the current cabinet:

DeRigueurMortis · 31/01/2021 23:29

I think that would be an own goal for the LP but given they (even post Corbin) so lost on this issue I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

More sunlight and all that....

Truth is Eddie can, as we know, be a highly engaging speaker, but that's using a very different style of engagement, topics and lack of controversy than you would expect from an MP.

When Eddie goes into political mode the absence of Eddie's stage presence, relevance/experience and general charisma is palpable.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 31/01/2021 23:55

It's fascinating to me that so many people with gender differences land up being professional transpeople.

Interestingly, that youtuber who came out said that there hadn't been a trans MP, and then Eddie says "oh, I'll have a go at that"

MerchedCymru · 01/02/2021 00:29

Eddie came to Wales on behalf of Labour to encourage us to support a Brexit No vote. Lots of us lefties turned up, along with some anti-EU but pro Eddie types and a smattering of don't-knows.

His speech was totally incoherent. Dumbed-down slogans, patronising appeals to Welsh history, no clear arguments and a complete inability to answer any of the questions.

In normal times I'd be surprised if he made it onto the shortlist. But it's not normal times of course.

CountessFrog · 01/02/2021 00:36

I used to love Eddie. Whatever happened to his ‘total clothing rights?’

I’d love him as my MP.
