What the fuck is this now?

We cant call ourselves women but we have to refer to our genitals as pussy, a la Trump.

For cervical cancer?

Fuck me, this is fucking HILARIOUS now

I have shared a nice evil cat on twitter.

I don't want to lose my friends by sharing covert references to my pubic hair either.

newyearnewname123 · 24/01/2021 07:31

They are now congratulating themselves that their "cheeky campaign" got us talking.

mobile.twitter.com/myGPapp/status/1352941882129711104

Fuck this shit.

Why couldn't they just run a normal campaign saying "don't worry, nurses don't care what your pubic hair looks like".

EdgeOfACoin · 24/01/2021 07:47

What an offensive advert.

However, the underlying point seems to be important - thanks to pornography and the now-common expectation that all women should be hairless below the eyebrows, some women are too embarrassed to have a smear test because of the presence of public hair (probably more of a problem in lockdown). I once read about a woman who waxed her bikini line while she was in the early stages of labour so that she would be suitably presentable for the birth.

I see the issue, but this advert misses the mark.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/01/2021 07:50

horrible, pornified crap.

as for the "3/5 women are missing their smear because they havent been waxed" - its out of women who 'regularily use professional waxing services'- theyve just extrapolated that onto all women. 🤷🏼‍♀️.

i just feel sad for my dd when i read stuff like this.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 24/01/2021 08:14

It's not even that 3/5 who regularly use professional waxing services are missing their smear, but that they "would put off" their smear if they couldn't visit a salon. The poll was taken in Jan 2020 (before any salons closed). No idea how many woman that equates to actually therefore missing their smear because of lockdown.

The more concerning stat is that 28% of women do not attend smears and that for a 1/3 of them the reason is embarassment. So around 1/10 of all women are not attending smears due to embarassment.

Well yes.

The idea that the majority of women wax in the first place is questionable.

peak2021 · 24/01/2021 08:26

Should it be a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority?

peak2021 · 24/01/2021 08:26

What's the image for it is absolutely none of your business?

ArabellaScott · 24/01/2021 08:45

I thought the stat sounded iffy. So where did they even get it from, was the study commissioned by beauticians, or what? As far as tone qoes it's on a par with those fucking breast cancer memes about pants or handbags. Who are these people?

PaleBlueMoonlight · 24/01/2021 08:50

It looks like it was a poll commissioned by them (myGP data). It was of 500 women age 25 to 65 who regularly attend a salon for professional hair removal. The poll was performed by 3Gem.

ArabellaScott · 24/01/2021 08:54

Thanks, Pale. Is it just me or is that a really very odd demographic to survey? Especially in this context? Why not women with dysmorphia or women with social anxiety? I am struggling to follow the thought process.

ArabellaScott · 24/01/2021 09:02

'We behave well, always

Our raison d’etre is the betterment of society; not the worsening. We will not employ business practices or engage with partners who undermine the trust of our customers, other partners, or the broader communities in which we operate.'

From the mygp app's FAQs

Helmetbymidnight · 24/01/2021 09:06

and now rachel riley has tweeted it:
57% of women are putting off their cervical screening because the beauty salons are closed so they’re not professionally groomed. 😱

how mis-information spreads Hmm

Rachel Riley? Isn't she from Countdown? Confused

You'd think she'd be stronger on statistics.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/01/2021 09:20

i know! just a quick check would have sufficed in the time it took to do a selfie with her cat.

ArabellaScott · 24/01/2021 09:20

88% of stats are bullshit.

HecatesCats · 24/01/2021 09:29

Tried to find a recent survey on waxing nethers. I've only come up with this article referring to a survey which found that half of UK women don't groom there at all. It's not 57% of all UK women by any stretch. Also makes you wonder if they did any analysis within that group? Are young women more likely to groom, do they need to be targeted? Aren't older women - esp if they've pushed out a few kids - less like to give a shit? Agree with Arabella, it's a strange demographic.

For some reason the link by the pp didn't work, does this one?

PaleBlueMoonlight · 24/01/2021 10:04

Thank you!

More interesting stat (from same survey?), is that a similar proportion of these women admitted to having missed their smear, but it doesn't put the two things together (ie did they miss their smear because of the lack of waxing? Forgot but went later? What is the missed smear statistic for women more generally?)

Nomnomarrgh · 24/01/2021 10:14

I’ve yet to see a cat that looks like my nether regions, thank God.

wellthatsunusual · 24/01/2021 10:20

That whole campaign is absolutely grim.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 24/01/2021 10:33

So unutterably tired of the sexualisation/pornification of a basic health check.

NoCureForLove · 24/01/2021 10:56

They make it pretyy hard to complain. Can't see any contact us bit on the website... Twitter cites the endorsement of Loose Women. Says it all.

Melroses · 24/01/2021 11:16

Well it has galvanised my resolve to do something about the process of opting out, at last.
