Transgender footy star sues AFL

HM is to sue the Australian Football League. Australian Rules Football is a similar game to rugby in that the ball is held and thrown and there are high impact tackles.

It is reported below that HM was unable to play in the senior league because they did not meet the lower testosterone level requirements for the women’s teams and also that they refused the offer of their own changing room.

It looks like HM wants to play in a lower women’s league (as opposed to an LGBT or mixed league)

While I’m sorry they don’t feel they are being taken seriously, I’m not sure the safety implications are coming across and I’m concerned this is just to set the precedent to later move up the women’s leagues, regardless of the impact on other participants.

Yes, if you draw the line at a skill level, you're just going to end up with a bunch of aggrieved people like Mouncey unable to move upwards.

So then what? If they don't sue, or fail to win, then do they make do with the current setup? Does the division below end up having loads of Mounceys unable to move up? They make do with being a "big fish" in a small pond? Maybe that's enough for their ego (McKinnon for example seems satisfied winning masters cycling).

Then any female wanting to reach the fabled "female-only" higher divisions first has to run the gauntlet of the mixed-sex lower division, full of bigger, stronger male players who could physically compete at higher "female" level but are prevented.

The "female-only" higher levels become reserved for women prepared to play mixed-sex. Any women who does not want to play with males is excluded.

If it's anything like rugby, having males playing is arguably even more dangerous at lower levels because of less specialist coaching, less experienced referees, etc.

This is a great thread (if you're quick enough to read it before, you know...)

Very true. Players perhaps having poorer technique will lead to higher injury levels too.
