I don't know if this has been shared here before, but it doesn't feel right! :/

It's totally unacceptable, and if it's official University policy, it contravenes so much of the Equalities Act, I don't even know where to start.

I'm afraid the management of the University of Edinburgh has been captured. Hopefully, not all the academics, who actually do the stuff (teaching & research) which is the central activity of any university (whatever management bods like to think ...)

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 16/01/2021 14:59

Love the photo - maybe the picture desk at the Scotsman are secretly a bit "terfy"?

The university's comment is just stupid - essentially they are saying: "you are free to to argue for your beliefs, but if you think women should be allowed rights, we officially brand you a bigot and your colleagues are free to openly harass you"

nestoftables · 16/01/2021 15:32

Ooh good to see this getting coverage. The university says they want us to be able to 'openly contest ideas we oppose', and even 'feel protected in doing so'. But any attempt at discussing this respectfully on campus has been shut down. Hmmm.

This is a very good response. xxnetwork.co.uk/2021/01/16/response-what-is-transphobia/?fbclid=IwAR1zW6vAkHmcidN1GyDIGPB4NKoOy6y6h2jcEMnO7xBfHtXlKNT0_if_OCk

"We are concerned that students may reasonably conclude that this information has been fact checked and approved by the university given its publication on the official website. We would recommend that a disclaimer is added above the article clarifying that the views expressed belong to the author and do not reflect the official views of the university. We also suggest that university managers investigate how the article came to be published in its current form, and take steps to prevent a re-occurrence."

That's the very least the uni should do. They should either remove the whole thing and issue an apology that it was ever uploaded, or make it very clear that it's the opinion of the authors only, and upload this response document alongside it.

nestoftables · 17/01/2021 18:59

Ah yes a really good and thorough response to it. Hopefully the appropriate senior staff at the university will read it and reconsider.

It would be really good if people were to email the University Principal, Peter Mathieson, to express their thoughts on the published article. They can also include a link to the well-written rebuttal by XX Network, and ask him to respond to specific questions or points raised.

If you are alumni or regularly donate money etc it is well worth emailing the principal so that he is aware that people outside of the university bubble are paying attention to these issues.

He doesn't seem interested. It's only women being smeared and harassed, nothing for someone as important as him to bother about. twitter.com/ForwomenScot/status/1351539953302384645

Just read that Princess Anne is Chancellor of Edinburgh. I refuse to believe she's anything other than firmly feminist and on the side of biological reality. Ideally she and Baroness Nicholson are pen pals!

Ehmbeeh · 20/01/2021 08:04

What a display of ignorance on all fronts and an embarrassment to the university and Scotland. I hope something is done by the university to challenge their assertions etc

Eowynthewarrior · 20/01/2021 18:06

Those statements about the risk posed. Might make interesting reading should any litigation ever result for any woman assaulted. Is that their risk assessment ? Is that their diversity impact assessment where women of certain faiths and ethnic backgrounds would be excluded

Ehmbeeh · 21/01/2021 08:17

All the info any of us need to write to the university principle is on this thread.

The benefit of having my state pension, my own home and my family on the same page as me, is it places me in a strong position to take action. Others can’t get involved in any action because they are vulnerable due to the potential of career paths being scuppered, loss of earnings etc

My parents expectation of me included being an active citizen. They were, until their very last years. I am not as confident as either of them however writing an email to express my concerns is within my capabilities. Grammar is not my strength but I will not allow that to prevent me from using my right to freedom of speech. Some people in other parts of the world, especially women, don’t have that right and in exercising ours we provide example and hope. We who have those rights and are not vulnerable cannot allow various forms of bullying to silence us because if we do, we, unintentionally, lend our collusion to strengthen their position.
Edinburgh have now removed the page on the back of complaints:

www.ed.ac.uk/equality-diversity/students/educateyourself/what-does-being-trans-and-or-non-binary-mean-new/what-is-transphobia?fbclid=IwAR3plBjBwPxhvap9DM4CQ0ln4pENHpBKh8UAYogclW3t7WjpNYzTpp6puIA
Good! Would love to have been a fly on the wall when that happened.

Ehmbeeh · 10/02/2021 08:39

I hope there is not a backlash. If there is, typing fingers at the ready! 😉

highame · 10/02/2021 08:47

This is good news, but they've only removed because of the complaints and not because it was a load of BS

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 10/02/2021 08:51
