www.ed.ac.uk/equality-diversity/students/educateyourself/what-does-being-trans-and-or-non-binary-mean-new/what-is-transphobia

I don't know if this has been shared here before, but it doesn't feel right! :/

this is a great, informative article about transphobia. horrible what trans people have to face in this country, some truly terrible abuse (some of it here on mumsnet)

thank you for sharing!

ArabellaScott · 15/01/2021 08:49

Do be sure to report any abuse you see, Philip. Mumsnet is very heavily moderated.

Apollo440 · 15/01/2021 09:51

Another baseless allegation of transphobia. Merely dicussing the subject and pointing out obvious absurdities in gender ideology is not transphobic. Provide receipts or cease your whinning.

RoyalCorgi · 15/01/2021 09:54

A round of applause for CharlieParley's post. You ought to send it to them. What an embarrassment to see one of the UK's most prestigious universities publishing such nonsense.

StrippedFridge · 15/01/2021 10:20

The worst thing about that article in my opinion is that I came away not knowing what the university think transphobia is, and thus how anyone there could test whether transphobia is happening, which was supposedly the purpose of the page.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/01/2021 10:21

I can't help wondering if these people are acting on behalf of the University - do the university "high ups" approve of these reputationally damaging statements being released on their behalf?

HuckfromScandal · 15/01/2021 10:37

A load of total hocus pocus claptrap.
Sadly the people within the Uni, and the unions who are attached to the UNI who voice any gender critical views are roundly and viciously turned upon, and therefore we tread very carefully - but we continue to fight this nonsense.

littlbrowndog · 15/01/2021 10:38

Cease your whining. Bloody love that 😂😂😂😂😂

RadicalFern · 15/01/2021 10:45

Don't discount the whole university vivarium! I'm a postgrad at Edinburgh and my department is certainly not immersed in this nonsense on the academic staff level.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 15/01/2021 11:00

You know what, Radical - it does put me off.

Which is something that a university with massive costs and a huge drop in funding and Covid's subsequent loss of overseas students might want to consider. I can't be alone in reading that and thinking "fuck it, I'll apply elsewhere".

I can't believe that the recruitment department would approve of the implications of that Wrong-Think drivel.

Maybe I should ask them? If this is the university's position then I don't think I'll get the most out of my studies - sex is a significant factor in my field.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 15/01/2021 11:07

The manifesto was at least properly formatted and structured. Although it was undeniably more bonkers than this. I mean there's entertainment value in the manifesto. Eyebrow raising stuff. Serious suggestion of having been written under the influence.

This is just badly written and stupid. It's what I would have expected to find on the website of an extreme fringe group but not a university website.

Agreed, CharlieParley. And a round of applause from me too for your excellent posts on here.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 15/01/2021 11:49

I can't find a definition of misogyny on the university website.

Seems odd.

nestoftables · 15/01/2021 11:56

Very good point vivarium! Re there being no similar statement on how not to be misogynistic.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I am affiliated to the uni but not confident to express my views on the internet! So I'm being very tentative...

Wasn't it Ed Uni where Julie Bindel was assaulted after she'd addressed a meeting? Not surprising, when inflammatory material like this is used to wind up potentially unstable students, staff and visitors. It's deeply irresponsible of the university managers to allow it let alone promote it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/01/2021 12:08

I think the Action for Trans Health manifesto still possibly holds that title.

That's the Edinburgh branch as well! Maybe someone contributed...

jhuizinga · 15/01/2021 12:11

Nest - I looked for a definition of misogyny too but couldn't find it. As a graduate of Edinburgh, I find it really hard to believe that the university, based in the city that gave us the Enlightenment, gives support to such ideological, incoherent, fact-free twaddle. I regularly get asked to donate money to Edinburgh Uni. In future I think I may respond by explaining why I won't.

weebarra · 15/01/2021 12:16

@jhuizinga, totally agree. As someone who spent 4 years there, and most of that split between the philosophy and psychology departments, I'm so disappointed in this, but not surprised.

Manderleyagain · 15/01/2021 12:16

One thing I took away was that the piece is pointing out how different the trans experience is compared to everyone else. That just makes the case to collect, monitor & analyse data on gender reassignment and sex separately, (rather than losing eg. trans men in amongst the male category) just as those nasty gender critical feminists keep saying.

Chrysanthemum5 · 15/01/2021 12:19

@jhuizinga please do the university know why you won't donate. Until it hits these organisations where it hurts they will take the easy route of chasing woke cookies rather than using any critical thinking

fatblackcatspaw · 15/01/2021 12:20

it would be great to campaign for graduates to write and complain about this twaddle. I went Stirling as I thought Edinburgh Uni's commitment to pulling down Enlightenment buildings beyond the pale myself. I can write as a local to tell them how shit they are as well. As a beleagred local population with student housing foisted onto us ... don't get me started!

There is a section on Gender Equality: if you dig down a bit you do get some much more interesting things, which do focus on women: www.ed.ac.uk/equality-diversity/inclusion/gender-equality
jhuizinga · 15/01/2021 13:19

I did look at the Gender Equality section, Jammy, but was disappointed that there was nothing specifically about equality between the sexes. I've no doubt much of the work on equality does focus on actual women - but how can this be monitored when the word women can include men? It's so intellectually sloppy for a start.

fatblackcatspaw · 15/01/2021 22:04

ooh article in The Scotsman about this www.scotsman.com/education/edinburgh-university-article-transphobia-sparks-protest-womens-rights-group-3102213
