Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Andy Wightman has resigned from the Scottish Greens

Because of the intolerance around sex and gender issues. Not too much of a surprise - I think he’s always been pretty gender critical but fighting to keep his mouth shut because he feels he has really important work to do. But the Scottish Greens make it more or less impossible to be in the party if you don’t cheerlead every single accepted view. His loss is a real blow to Scottish politics. I’m so angry with the SGP for chasing him out.

Hmm, I wonder if the other co-convener that isn't Patrick Harvey should perhaps make way for Mridul?

carlaCox · 18/12/2020 17:49

As sad as it is to say - this is what we desperately need - some "sensible men" to stand up against this stuff and show people that it's not just us "hysterical terfs" that see the conflict of rights here.

So, Andy, thank you.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 18/12/2020 17:52

I've tweeted support for him. I'm fucking angry that this is even up for debate. How fucking dare they enshrine in law a man's right to intimately examine a traumatised woman?? What the fuck is becoming of this country. Angry

Jeez first time never posted. Then appeared like 👍

He says in his letter that he was told if he voted for the amendment to the recent Bill - the amendment that allows rape victims to choose to be examined by a woman- he’d face disciplinary proceedings.

Anyone in the Scottish Greens: your party is promoting rape culture. Victimising rape victims. Making their ability to pursue criminal proceedings dependent on agreeing to be examined by a man.

I don’t really see how anyone of good conscience could remain associated with this political party. It’s obscene.

Grellbunt · 18/12/2020 18:09

Oh he is just soooo hilarious

Lorna Slater. White woman from Canada, she doesn't score too well on the old oppression points. All she has to offer is her expertise on environmental matters, and who cares about that nowadays. She's not an MSP though so won't have to make way.

Wee Jordan Henderson (Alyn Smith's ex) has also joined the Greens. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Alyn Smith left the SNP too...

Ironically, the Greens are going to eat themselves!

Sexnotgender · 18/12/2020 18:59

I hope they start with Patrick Harvie, he’s such a little shitebag.

Love this.

Really principled decision. But personally heartbroken as it's a huge loss for Scottish Parliament next year (he sadly has very little chance of re-election on the list as an independent candidate. which he must know. Making it an even more significant decision. A candidate needs huge public profile to be elected as an independent - Margo MacDonald and Dennis Canavan are only ones to have done it.)

This line from the Guardian's report speaks volumes - "There are not thought to be any trans women working at medical examiners in Scotland at this time."

In other words - we're all getting our knickers in a twist over nothing.

I despair about the Guardian. I really do.

Namechange2020lalala · 18/12/2020 19:19

I have so much respect for Andy Wightman, he's a stellar writer and research, he's taken on big landowners and his approach to things is balanced and methodical. Why Partick Harvie thought he could shit over that is galling.

MondayYogurt · 18/12/2020 19:31

As climate chaos and acknowledgement of the dire situation we are in has become more mainstream, the Greens have become less relevant. So they've had to expand their remit, just as Stonewall has done.

All the responses I’ve seen from SGP members very earnestly insist simultaneously that
(i) this is a stupid distraction because there are no transwomen in these roles, and anyway there’s no legal distinction between sex and gender, so women are fussing about nothing, and
(ii) this is an attempt to create a precedence in parliament that there is a difference between sex and gender, and therefore is a horrible transphobic dog whistle and will change everything.

They don’t seem to see that these is a contradiction between there. And also the constant use of the phrase “dog whistle” about this is so annoying. There is nothing dog-whistley about this - there is an explicit and unashamed declaration that sex and gender are not the same.

The Edinburgh Greens (of whom Andy was formerly a member) sent out an earnest email saying how terrible this was and how they stand by our trans-siblings, and listed all the key issues the SGP were concerned with and were still committed to. First in the list was equality and diversity, and with the somewhat surprising omission of anything connected to green issues ...

Remember the abuse, death threats, rape threats and all round VILE comments JK Rowling got?

Totally absent now it’s a man saying the same thing. Of course some people disagree with wightman but they’re expressing themselves in a totally different way.

Can’t see any orders for wightman to suck their hairy trans dick....

Yep. How can the Greens be so wilfully blind to how this looks?

Attention.

Subscribers to the Encyclopedia Transgalactica must remove the pages on the non-person Wightman immediately.
Extra articles on Wiminx will be sent out in due course as replacements.

littlbrowndog · 18/12/2020 20:41

These insults to JK. Actually make me feel ill

It’s like a torrent of hate unleashed against women legitimately as she is just a terf

All these men getting to unleash their hate and feel good about it

If they put the word woman instead of terf would they be condemned?

Manderleyagain · 18/12/2020 20:45

It's quite something to see lots of people from different political parties speaking on twitter about how much respect they have for him.
