Can someone please explain... (trans)

So I've been trying to follow this trans situation for a while but now having skin in the game in the form of a child (and also noting through work how more and more people are identifying as the opposite gender) I need to understand it better.
Feel slightly embarrassed asking but:

 1. How exactly do the words sex and gender differ in this area?
 2. What reasons do trans people give for wanting to change their physical bodies? As in what do people believe they will get from this that they couldn't get in the body they were born with?
 3. What are children being taught at school about this?
Thanks!

You're getting a little into conspiracy-theory territory there.

You'd think, wouldn't you.

midgebabe · 16/12/2020 18:24

So you accept that not all people have a gander identity

And we know ( you do too, I don't believe you are stupid) that everyone has a sex

Yet you seem to conflate the two.

Positrans · 16/12/2020 18:24

@Alethiometrical

If anything, DSDs prove that sex is binary

This. Chromosomal mutations occur because of sexual reproduction.

Indeed, but not all pregnant people are female.

I do.

Your problem is that I simply don't believe I'm not female

Female = of the class that produces eggs

Are you telling me you believe you are of that class?

I know I am a woman because of my body, and having given birth I am 100% certain that I am female, with no ambiguity in my sex.

What does your body tell you about your sex?

Positrans · 16/12/2020 18:25

Gender identity is one of a huge number of sex characteristics.
Alethiometrical · 16/12/2020 18:25

The rest of us shouldn't be expected to redefine "woman", a category that exists in material reality, to conform with your subjective experience

Nor can we allow UK law, and public policy, to be determined by the undefinable concept of 'gender identity.'
**@titchy* "Of course you were positrans, of course you were. There there"*

You know, I'm told they take a bit of a dim view of people being patronising on this forum. I'm going to assume you are a man.
Literal violence that. Be careful.

I don't think anyone is denying that gender dysphoria exists are they? Just that gender dysphoria doesn't mean that someone actually is the opposite sex?

midgebabe · 16/12/2020 18:27

No only females can get pregnant

That's what the words mean

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/12/2020 18:28

Gender identity isn't a sex characteristic, it's a disputed internal feeling based on sex role stereotypes.

This is pointless - you know I'm going to say that not all females produce eggs, and then you'll say "the class..." and I'll say, if you don't produce eggs, your not in the class that do, and it'll go in a pointless circle at the end of which I will still believe I am female and you still won't.

It doesn't matter though - I don't need you to believe me, and you don't need me to believe you.

titchy · 16/12/2020 18:28

Indeed, but not all pregnant people are female.

All pregnant people are biologically XX, owners of large gametes and specific phenotype. The word for those people is female. It's the very definition of the word.

I agree - gender dysphoria doesn't define your sex, however, gender identity is one of thousands of defining sex characteristics.
midgebabe · 16/12/2020 18:29

I think gender identity can be physical , not just a reaction to stereotypes , but a disgust at your body driving that mental
Image

Still would not mean you are actually the other sex

titchy · 16/12/2020 18:30

But that is only because you simply do not understand what 'of the class' means. The fault is your ignorance not ours.

No gender identity is not a sex characteristic. It does not affect fertility in any way

Sex is simple and binary and you can have any or no gender identity no matter what your sex

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 16/12/2020 18:31

Only females get pregnant, no matter how they personally identify.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/12/2020 18:32

and I'll say, if you don't produce eggs, your not in the class that do

The class is about reproductive role. You don't become a member of the other reproductive class just because you don't produce gametes.

Women are born with our eggs but we don't have any after menopause. It has never been the case that we suddenly aren't female.

Dull, pointless, unconvincing sophistry.

titchy · 16/12/2020 18:32

Will you have prostrate exams? Or cervical smear tests? If you have a heart attack or liver condition will you ask for the female treatment protocols to be administered or the male ones?

Passmeabottlemrjones · 16/12/2020 18:32

This is pointless - you know I'm going to say that not all females produce eggs, and then you'll say "the class..." and I'll say, if you don't produce eggs, your not in the class that do, and it'll go in a pointless circle at the end of which I will still believe I am female and you still won't.

So you are saying that women who, for whatever reason, don't produce eggs aren't female? That they aren't in 'the class of female'?

What is your definition of female?

Are you saying that a person who doesn't produce eggs from their ovaries because of, say, chemotherapy is the same as a person who doesn't produce eggs because they have a cock and balls? Confused

Positrans · 16/12/2020 18:33

@midgebabe

Sex isn't simple binary though. I mean it's just a fact.
