I follow Jo on Twitter and feel that the GoodLaw project is a needed and good thing when it comes to holding ministers/gov spending to account. He seems to take refuge in the rule of law and facts .... so, so WHY after the recent ruling on puberty blockers is he tweeting and retweeting Trans folk who are sharing (in emotive and extra detail) their experience post ruling. What his deal?? What’s his skin in the game? Looked through some old tweets and he really seems to have come down hard against women’s rights.
Ca anyone explain his deal here?

For the blocked, it says: "I wonder whether you'd be more careful if you were not operating from behind the cloak - for the moment at any rate - of anonymity?"

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/12/2020 01:43

I think the secret Barrister is male!

I think so too and always have. They don't generally take what you would call a female-centred outlook on controversial male/female cases they've looked at. I know that isn't conclusive as some women don't but it's my feeling.

I would agree that the live tweet along for some reason feels very female. Which makes for an interesting discussion in itself - why or how do we interpret certain behaviours or speech patterns as 'male' or 'female'?

OvaHere · 19/12/2020 10:31

Is there any reason SB couldn't be a collective of a few people, male and female?

Running a high profile twitter account must be time consuming if it's only one person who presumably has quite a demanding day job also.

C0NNIE · 19/12/2020 11:11

I think SB is a woman. Other QCs who know SB personally refer to SB using female pronouns.

Manderleyagain · 19/12/2020 11:24

Maughan referred to SB as 'he', and said something about his salary - like he knew.

RoyalCorgi · 19/12/2020 13:46

I always thought that SB seemed in most respects male (esp given their pronouncements on things like sexual abuse cases) but there's a bit in the book where they mention crying in the toilets after a particularly awful case. I've never known a man admit to crying in the toilets.

I once saw Guido Fawkes name a particular (male) barrister as being the SB but no one ever seemed to pick up on it, so it might just have been a wild guess.

The collective idea is a possibility too. All that blogging, tweeting and book writing must take up an awful lot of time.

RoyalCorgi · 19/12/2020 13:54

Also, that #LawActually thread - lots of references to Colin Firth being a sex god and crying during the sentimental bits. Has to be either a woman or a gay man...

PotholeParadies · 19/12/2020 14:15

In my opinion, women find it easier to pull off a male voice online than the reverse.

PlantMam · 19/12/2020 20:37

Jolly is just salty because SB has more followers.

Simon Myerson QC may slightly restore your faith if you’re not already following him!

There is now a real fear among some women at the bar about engaging in this issue. It’s too easy for the nebulous “bringing the profession into disrepute” to be used as a complaint to try and disbar barristers who express views publicly. It is particularly concerning for people towards the start of their career who have no other options to fall back on, and particularly frustrating when they might be much more qualified in the relevant areas of law than certain other barristers I could mention...

Helmetbymidnight · 19/12/2020 21:52

that oliver may is another woman hating asshole- still, his tweets dont seem to be getting a great deal of love yet.

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 19/12/2020 22:01

I do wish these people would be specific when they talk about denying 'trans rights'. It sounds so awful, so bigoted - really it means saying not to relinquishing the right to single sex spaces, sports and so on. Why are they so disingenuous? Or is it that they just haven't given it any thought? In which case there are so many disappointing people out there masquerading as grown ups.

Helmetbymidnight · 19/12/2020 22:05

theyve swept a superficial eye over it and they cant hear women- its astonishing.
that barrister must be a dim-wit- just chanting meaningless slogans- i cant understand it.

on the simon myerson thread, interesting to see even QCs say that jolyon has blocked them! what must they think of him!

yourhairiswinterfire · 19/12/2020 22:11

I hope these morons realise they've made the word 'transphobic' mean absolutely jack shit. I just roll my eyes when I hear it and assume someone has mentioned chromosomes or said 'woman' or something. They can all pat each other on the fucking back for causing that.

I also wish people would stop acting like children are small adults, with adult knowledge. Really concerning. It feels like everyone responsible for child protection is sleeping whilst safeguarding is being bulldozed by idiots who know fuck all about it.

(As a side note, I find it amazing how the judges involved in the Keira Bell case apparently shouldn't have been involved because they're ''cis'', yet no one throws that around when it's people like ''cis'' Jolly and his mates waving the flag for them. And you can bet there'd be absolutely no issue with the judges ''cisness'' had they decided in Tavistock's favour.)

RealityNotEssentialism · 19/12/2020 22:29

So Oliver May sounds like a prize wanker. Looks like one too.

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 19/12/2020 22:38

theyve swept a superficial eye over it and they cant hear women

Every time

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 19/12/2020 22:40

I also wish people would stop acting like children are small adults, with adult knowledge.

How did we get here when we never really got safeguarding right/entrenched in the first place? I don't get it.

PotholeParadies · 19/12/2020 22:42

Of course, it must be that us Gender Critical people hate trans people, Oliver. It couldn't be that we are motivated by the same concerns over child welfare that you have.

It couldn't be that we also reasoned out what the combo of misled/abusive parent + doctor-shopping could lead to, without safeguarding, could it?

merrymouse · 19/12/2020 23:44

I’m not very impressed by a lawyer who talks about a right to ‘self identify’.

The existing law is based on a right to privacy. If he thinks the government needs to classify people’s identities, that is a different proposition.

AnotherLass · 20/12/2020 00:10

Timothy Brennan QC, who is the head of Devereux chambers, has been tweeting things like "irresponsible" and "lost the plot" at the GLP's mad tweet.
