I follow Jo on Twitter and feel that the GoodLaw project is a needed and good thing when it comes to holding ministers/gov spending to account. He seems to take refuge in the rule of law and facts .... so, so WHY after the recent ruling on puberty blockers is he tweeting and retweeting Trans folk who are sharing (in emotive and extra detail) their experience post ruling. What his deal?? What’s his skin in the game? Looked through some old tweets and he really seems to have come down hard against women’s rights.
Ca anyone explain his deal here?

Having posted above I wondered about Maugham the superhero so I had a quick search on twitter and was struck by how often you can find tweeting about him being a "superhero".

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 18/12/2020 16:40

These tweets are a useful guide to how JM views himself:

"I'm sorry-not-sorry for continuing to tweet out @Okwonga's piece (that I regret I missed when he published it in June). But the point he makes - that it's not enough to think yourself good, as though your very presence on this earth were enough - could not resonate with me more."

@SophocIestheFox

I expect he assumes that the demographic who loved him for Brexit will be the same people as will love him for this, because he’s fallen in to that classic lefty trap of “all right thinking people ought to believe this”, which is a trap I’ve come to see I’ve fallen into myself in the past. He believes that those who oppose him are knuckle dragging homophobes and EDL types who’ve never been over the village bridge.

He hasn’t read the room.

I think 99% of his lawyer colleagues are calling him out for being a total doofus and laughing at him. I wonder if the penny is starting to drop that he’s got this one wrong or whether the support of a load of anime avitars is still keeping him going in his belief that he’s on the right side of history.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/12/2020 16:50

He hasn’t read the room.

Just like he didn't last Boxing Day.

RealityNotEssentialism · 18/12/2020 17:11

Lol, yes that backfired. I think it’s probably likely that one of his children identifies as trans, or maybe a niece or nephew. He’s way too emotionally involved in the case and his comments about how the judges undermined parental authority suggests that he has serious skin in the game. It also explains the gigantic volte-face from an initially GC position in 2018. I have sympathy with him there (must be completely horrendous to have a child going through that) but he’s making a public laughing stock out of himself and clearly isn’t thinking rationally.

Manderleyagain · 18/12/2020 17:32

I think this issue must be close to him. I have seen twitter gossip that it is. I think really he should pass this campaign to someone else because the things he is saying about it are rather undermining to glp. I don't actually know that anyone else is involved to hand it to though. Is it a one man band like pp asks?

It's surprising how many lawyers are blocked by him on twitter. Lots of male ones too. People he might actually meet in professional life. Very strange behaviour.

PlantMam · 18/12/2020 17:40

@Ereshkigalangcleg

He hasn’t read the room.

Just like he didn't last Boxing Day.

I’m calling it ‘Foxing Day’ from now on in honour of Jolly.
ghislaine · 18/12/2020 17:40

I think the change (somewhere around 2018) in his references to his three daughters to his three children is telling. Not proof. But interesting.

Pretty sure that the GLP is also Just Jolyon. Do you ever hear from anyone else representing the GLP?

nauticant · 18/12/2020 17:42

The governance of GLP often comes up here:

goodlawproject.org/about/ (scroll down)

Stewart Wood is on twitter but doesn't seem to have Maugham's mania. Rupert Evans keeps a pretty low profile.

teawamutu · 18/12/2020 18:39

He hasn’t read the room

He's far too busy fucking Jolsplaining to it.

ghislaine · 18/12/2020 18:55

According to the annual report they had no staff until early 2020.

VicSynix · 18/12/2020 18:59

He's now having a row with the Secret Barrister.

Which has resulted in the Secret Barrister deleting their tweet and Mr FoxyWoxy being agressively threatening anyhow.

Though having helpfully pointed out that Mr FW is assuming the Secret Barrister is a male, and isn't that just a tad misogynistic, I am now obviously blocked from reading his tweets.

PlantMam · 18/12/2020 19:29

‘Jolsplaining’

Grin
HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 18/12/2020 19:29

The GLP has a Comms Manager. I think her mother may be a well known former director of the GLP and she previously worked as Harriet Harman's Adviser and Parliamentary assistant. So do Sam Smethers and HH also think like this?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/12/2020 19:32

Sam Smethers from the Fawcett Society? Good grief.

teawamutu · 18/12/2020 19:43

Although I'm slightly annoyed with myself for not realising maughamsplaining works better.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/12/2020 20:11

What a huge coincidence it is that the GLP advertised a post and the best candidate turned out to be the daughter of one of the directors! What are the odds? I note that Rachel Smethers has been involved with the Fawcett Society too, for over five years. No doubt this voluntary role was also given to the best candidate who applied.

Urgh & Christine burns shoved their oar in

twitter.com/christineburns/status/1340006695347601408?s=21

I have to say I always assumed Secret Barrister was a woman

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 18/12/2020 20:14

Christine also assuming The Secret Barrister is male. As you do.

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 18/12/2020 20:15

I'd always assumed SB was a woman to. The 'as you do' was flippant.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 18/12/2020 20:21

As a not so secret barrister, chambers is split between the women who think SB is a woman and the men who think SB is a man.

Whereas all of us think SH is a man

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/12/2020 20:28

Rachel Smethers sounds about as much of a switched on feminist as her mother.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/12/2020 20:29

What happened with the Secret Barrister?

RealityNotEssentialism · 18/12/2020 20:34

Nah, I reckon SB must be male. The amount of mansplaining coming from that account is off the scale. Although I am somewhat impressed that SB has gotten involved in this because to date, SB has assumed a rather cowardly stance of refusing to get involved in any of the debate over gender identity stuff.
