Stephanie Davis Arai is, in person, a softly spoken, very gentle woman. With so much empathy, it just emanates from her.

Absolutely in awe of Stephanie, her integrity in the face of loud opposition and vile smears and her commitment to what is right.

@northstars

I googled the case and am finding some of the coverage very odd. Several headlines saying things like “High court rules children under 16 CAN take puberty blockers as long as they understand the consequences”?? Surely that’s the opposite of what the courts have ruled Hmm
It's my understanding that from a legal point of view it's possible, but the judge has ruled that it's highly unlikely that the repercussions would be understood. Certainly from 13 down, and even from 13 to 16.

You would be taking your reputation and career your hands to prescribe blockers to anyone under 16 from now on, is my understanding.

Whatwouldscullydo · 01/12/2020 13:43

Yes your

I think they should be a bit more careful with what those who are posting say, with a between the judgment and the fact that the GIDs barrister is suddenly worrying about the effects on shoe undergoing treatment when its been sold they can stop any time and all is fine, its become even clear its no longer about the health of the children.

I'm.surprised anyone wants to be assistant with the conclusions that will be drawn by that now.

DisappearingGirl · 01/12/2020 13:44

Hopefully this outcome will pave the way really nicely for the broader independent review of GIDS.

They've confirmed that the current evidence base is rubbish, that puberty blockers likely have long-term effects, and that young people probably can't consent to them.

Seems a great lead-in to allow the broader review to ask whether there is sufficient evidence for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to be used in young people AT ALL.

DickKerrLadies · 01/12/2020 13:44

Fucking Sheroes, every one of you.

lostintheday · 01/12/2020 13:44

Good interview on World at 1 on Radio 4 with the interviewee (sorry didn't catch who he was) saying he feels it is unlikely any clinician would now prescribe PB without going to court to gain approval, as it would open them up to potential law suits. Also said he feels it is likely this will lead to a shift to more therapeutic treatments rather than experimental treatments.

BettyDuKeiraBellisMyShero · 01/12/2020 13:46

@BettyDuKeiraBellisMyShero

Yep. The first headline on BBC Cambridgeshire was: ‘Gender reassignment: NHS loses puberty blockers legal case‘

Now it’s been changed to:
‘Gender reassignment: High Court rules on puberty blockers for under-16s‘

BBC Cambridgeshire have now changed headlines AGAIN!

The THIRD version is:

‘Puberty blockers: Under-16s 'unlikely' to be able to give informed consent’

Grin The absolute state of British journalism Grin

nauticant · 01/12/2020 13:46

It'll be this one Collidascope where HuffPostUK tried to spin the decision to mean the opposite of what it really means:

There's going to be a lot written about this in the next weeks. This from the Transgender Trend statement is telling:

The judgment handed down today has established the salient facts about puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones

Puberty blockers are not ‘fully reversible’
Puberty blockers do not ‘buy time’, they are the first stage of a medical pathway very few children come off
There is no evidence that puberty blockers alleviate distress
The pathway of blockers and cross-sex hormones has serious physical consequences, including the loss of fertility and full sexual function, with profound long-term risks and consequences
The treatment is experimental

The most damning evidence of complacency in the service is the fact that the GIDS offers troubled adolescents no alternative therapeutic treatment pathway. Far from being a last resort treatment, blockers and hormones are the only treatment for children with complex histories and mental health conditions. This is the result of a service that operates on the basis of ideology in place of clinical standards. The judgment raises the issue of medical negligence and our immediate concern is for the children who have already been through this medical system

viques · 01/12/2020 13:49

@Whatwouldscullydo

Luckily the very wise and thorough judgement anticipated this pathetic “save all our children” plea by very carefully outlining various ways Gillick competence should be, and has been judicially recorded, according to the particular effects and demands of the medical procedures under discussion . The judgement makes it very clear that where long term effects of a procedure are unlikely to be understood , then invoking Gillick competence is not appropriate. The judgement also made it clear that there are also situations, and the administration of puberty blockers is one of them, where parental consent does not apply as well. Only courts can now make that decision.

So this faux plea for preserving the rights of young women to seek abortions , (made incidentally by someone who can’t even refer to herself as a woman) is a red herring. What a shame Mermaids and the Tavistock havent been so virtuously concerned with the well-being of young women, and young men, before.

Datun · 01/12/2020 13:50

And yes to everything you say about Stephanie and Transgender Trend. Working quietly and respectfully in the background always centring children and their needs.

Indeed. She has been vindicated today. Again.

This is really interesting.

Talking to children to find out why they think they're the wrong sex would be a real start in unravelling this whole mess.

Where they are getting their information, why they think it means what they do, all of it.

Let's find out exactly why children are showing up in their droves to block puberty and take lifelong drugs, and why so many people don't want it challenged.

I think some outlets jumped in early without fully understanding the judgement.

I think some many journalists didn't want the judgement to mean what it means. So they tried some doublespeak.
BeUpStanding · 01/12/2020 13:55

Does anyone have a link to the full judgement, not just the summary? Sorry if I've missed it, thread is moving too fast!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/12/2020 13:55

Interesting...

I am currently on puberty blockers from a private provider – will these be stopped?

This judgment applies to the treatment, not to the provider, so all providers, public and private, are bound by it. See the responses above. This includes any treatment administered in the United Kingdom.

If my puberty blockers from GIDS are stopped, can I access them via private providers?

This judgment applies to the treatment, not to the provider, so all providers, public and private, are bound by it. See the responses above. This includes where providers are based overseas, but treatment is administered in the United Kingdom

Far from being a last resort treatment, blockers and hormones are the only treatment for children with complex histories and mental health conditions.

We’ve had Mumsnetters confirm this with personal anecdotes in previous threads, parents whose children have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and chosen not to go ahead with blockers have simply been discharged from GIDS and left to their own devices.

GIDS have no alternative pathway to blockers and eventual cross sex hormones.

‘Gender Identity Development Service’ my arse.

I’ve got this update from GIDS queued for archiving at present:
