Irish women will be heard (trending)

Hi everyone. #WeWillBeHeard is trending on twitter in Ireland. It is in reponse to Amnesty International, the National Women's Council of Ireland and other major NGO's calling for people who "defend biology" or who are gender critical to be disenfranchised.

Their words: "..Let us say unequivocally that the statements of newly launched organisations that seek to defend biology or fight gender identity and expression do not represent the wider LGBTI+ community nor feminists in Ireland... We call on media, and politicians to no longer provide legitimate representation for those that share bigoted beliefs."

This is a thread with pictures and the hastag which is trending

A response letter from The Countess didn't fight for this thecountessdidntfightforthis.com/we-will-be-heard/

And an archived copy of the original ridiculous letter they are replying to (usual tropes about being far right etc) archive.is/glPXl#selection-1561.0-1561.202

I brought it up with my mom, an old-school feminist and she was shocked to learn that you can change your legal gender just by filling out a form, and that they’re sending kids to London for hormone blockers.

The more people on my Twitter feed who declare their pronouns makes me want to add “female” to my bio.

I work on the climate change issue and that seems to be particularly bad.

Was expecting there to be some great letters to the editor after the FOT article yesterday but theres only one and its hyperbolic rather than sharply written

highame · 02/12/2020 07:53

Can't find it now, but did I read up thread about Irish transkids (assuming under 18) being sent to London for treatment? I think after the ruling, not anymore

miri1985 · 02/12/2020 08:09

The Tavistock clinic (the clinic which was involved the Keira Bell case) are the ones who were treating Irish teens on puberty blockers, they held a clinic in Crumlin hospital 4 times a year. Edocrinologists in Ireland brought concerns about how it was being run and that they felt children were being wrongly diagnosed but their concerns were supressed by the HSE

www.independent.ie/irish-news/health/doctors-in-row-with-hse-over-claims-childrens-transgender-care-is-unsafe-38920159.html

It will be interesting to see how this is progressed now that Tavistock is hampered by the KB ruling, I can't see the HSE approving something that a UK court has so strongly criticised.

I wonder where this will leave allowing gender recognition certs for under 16's, you would hope that there would be a genuine examination of the path that has been gone down with regard to this and some introspection about the problems with the GRA but I think itll just go forward full speed ahead.

If this concerned anything else I would fully expect the government to get a roasting over what they have done but I'm not expecting any politican to stick their head above the parapet on this one.

highame · 02/12/2020 08:16

I hope the ruling helps Ireland, even if politicos blame the Tavistock, instead of their own zeal. The resultant win for our Irish Sisters and their children will be worth it.

Thanks for the infomiri

@afloat - I was in your situation two years ago - but I was not a working academic, just finishing higher level specialisation and got called out by my professor - if you knew the area of my thesis and her area of expertise you would really cry for the future of mental healthcare for adolescents in Ireland.

7Days · 02/12/2020 09:46

To change the subject slightly, does anyone know much about the Hate Crime Bill currently going through?

SecondRow · 02/12/2020 12:27

I need to get up to speed on that, 7Days.

Just found this (skipped over earlier search results quoting Colm O'Gorman Wink) and note in the last paragraph the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and other "relevant agencies" to be consulted – perhaps a need for women's groups to assert their stakeholdership.

7Days · 02/12/2020 13:16

Me too.
The countess site has a template letter on it, which is great, but I'd like a few more perspectives.

Wish I read legalese myself.

Hi, I wonder is anyone in Dublin? Colm O'Gorman has retweeted a picture of an Amnesty International sign which had graffiti on it. With the tweet. "I see they've(sic) moved onto vandalism (sic) now. Nice".

He didn't get away with representing the grafittied sign being current as people called it out as being from a previous campaign Amnesty were involved in (they may have been aligned with misogynistic view of prostitution, i.e. exploitation of women) from 2017 and not even in Ireland.

When he finally responded to @iseult (White), he said it looked like Amnesty Dublin's office. Now I was curious about this and looked on google earth (street view) at Amnesty's entrance in Fleet Street. It seems to be a door entrance. Obviously with a stairs behind and not street level. However, the Amnesty International sign itself is on a background of green painted wood. The one O'Gorman tweeted (and stated was just like the Dublin office sign) was simply on a bare red brick background. So completely different background from the one in Dublin. He wouldn't be that disingenuous, would he?

Does anyone walk along that area and could have a peek? Fleet Street, opposite the Hard Rock Cafe. Is the Amnesty sign on a painted wooden background or on bare brick background. I am very interested if a tangled web is being woven even more.

SimplyRadishing · 02/12/2020 23:23

So happy this is trending

Fucking disgraceful.
Amnesty should be ashamed.

334bu · 02/12/2020 23:25

Picture according to Twitter dates from 2017 protest against AI's stance on prostitution.

7Days · 03/12/2020 06:08

Why double down?
Brazenness, fear?

In this situation, most groups get the 'courtesy' of mealy mouthed platitudes. It's most odd

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/12/2020 07:45

When you’ve backed yourself into a corner all you can do is double down and hope in time you’re on the right side of history (you’re not) or enough time will pass to make it all water under the bridge.

I wonder if members of the public can comment on this. Or, is it worth sending comms to td's?

Any update on this?
Cailleach1 · 03/12/2020 19:29

I don't have anyone in Dublin at the moment that I can ask. However, I looked at the google timeline of the building in Fleet street. Lots of building work went on and the full length sign seems to have been there before it was reduced to the smaller Amnesty sign on the wooden facade which is painted.green. Carrolls Irish gifts installed. Timeline for last photo is September 2019.

If the Dublin Amnesty sign is still on the forest green wooden background, I would be thinking someone tried to hornswoggle everyone that it was an honest and innocent mistake. It would be such a flag.

Anyone have a relative around Trinity or who goes along Westmoreland street or Temple bar? Take a quick phone snap and share with all us lovelies?

Cailleach1 · 03/12/2020 19:35

I'm not on twitter or Facebook. Only mumsnet.

ForeverFaithless · 03/12/2020 19:35

I'll take a cycle in there on my bike tomorrow and take a pic.

MadamBatty · 03/12/2020 20:34

I’ll be going by there tomorrow afternoon, I’ll have a look too

Cailleach1 · 04/12/2020 12:08

I've just noticed the signs themselves appear to be different. On google earth, the sign over Amnesty's Dublin office has the candle on the left. The one O'Gorman, honestly and innocently dontcha know, retweeted because "it looked exactly like our office in Dublin which is currently closed" has the candle on the right.

So, if the picture on google earth street view is correct, not only is the background different to the retweet but the layout of sign itself is different.

Which bit looks exactly like 'our office in Dublin' again? À propos of nothing, what would be the definition of a sleveen?

XXSex · 04/12/2020 13:32

Watching with interest
