Irish women will be heard (trending)

Hi everyone. #WeWillBeHeard is trending on twitter in Ireland. It is in reponse to Amnesty International, the National Women's Council of Ireland and other major NGO's calling for people who "defend biology" or who are gender critical to be disenfranchised.

Their words: "..Let us say unequivocally that the statements of newly launched organisations that seek to defend biology or fight gender identity and expression do not represent the wider LGBTI+ community nor feminists in Ireland... We call on media, and politicians to no longer provide legitimate representation for those that share bigoted beliefs."

This is a thread with pictures and the hastag which is trending

A response letter from The Countess didn't fight for this thecountessdidntfightforthis.com/we-will-be-heard/

And an archived copy of the original ridiculous letter they are replying to (usual tropes about being far right etc) archive.is/glPXl#selection-1561.0-1561.202

It links to 'full letter' here
gcn.ie/irish-lgbtq-community-stand-irishsolidarit-transphobia-trans-day-remembrance/

Which is not changed so that's good.

It still references defending biology (?) as a bad thing.

Ok I'm more relaxed now.

The shorter version in the change petition is interesting but the full letter stands. Good.

miri1985 · 26/11/2020 23:57

Anyone else noticing the silence about this letter from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties?

SecondRow · 27/11/2020 08:09

miri1985, is it that they are used to holding the state to account, but treat the NGO/third sector as the good guys on the same side as them? Gentlemen's agreement? Genuine question, I'm not that well informed on them.

peanut2017 · 27/11/2020 08:13

That Aidan Comerford is one the creepiest guys I ever have the misfortune to come across.

Did anyone see the YouTube clip of him trying to do a comedy act and actually could be interpreted as transphobic? Will try and find it

mobile.twitter.com/antlawson1974/status/1275951486732730373?lang=en

Here is the video showing him trying and failing to be funny. He literally bullies women online for a living it seems. Sad little man

SecondRow · 27/11/2020 08:20

By the way, purplepizzabunny, are you able to say what you got deleted for yesterday? Do we have watchers on the Irish threads now too?

purplepizzabunny · 27/11/2020 08:28

I used an inappropriate term when referring to a trans woman so I was told

purplepizzabunny · 27/11/2020 08:29

I emailed iccl earlier in the week about this. They have not responded.

SecondRow · 27/11/2020 08:45

Ah ok... Glad you're still here though, I tried to @ you and it wouldn't let me click on your name, I feared the worst Sad

7Days · 27/11/2020 08:46

These NGO type organisations are useless.

Cailleach1 · 27/11/2020 08:56

Why haven't they linked directly to the letter that damned people who defend biology or that they called for women's voices and public representation to be suppressed.

That is the letter all those gobshite TD and organisations supposedly for human (now we know that means men) rights put their name to. Not that abridged version. It is dishonest.

He used to haunt OMGWACA with his attempts at humour. And then used it as a PR outlet for his book.
Abhannmor · 27/11/2020 09:30

Visit the Amnasty FBpage and give them your tuppence worth!

purplepizzabunny · 27/11/2020 10:02

I get the impression though Comerford is very out on his own. He is still ranting away but no one from TENI really seems to engage with him.

Don't know if anyone read it but a certain TRA is writing a book about how she and a former friend used to do illegal castrations. Awful stuff.

SecondRow · 27/11/2020 11:05

Jesus, purple Confused

Is that supposed to convince people that what we need is "trans healthcare" on demand, because the only alternative is backstreet butchery?

purplepizzabunny · 27/11/2020 11:13

Well this particular individual compares themselves to the "Jane" movement of pre Roe vs Wade America. Even though it comes across that they operated on whoever came in without doing any screening.

NiceGerbil · 27/11/2020 15:53

SecondRow that is one of the major arguments for abortion.

So, looks like that reasoning is going to be taken and turned around to say feminists are hypocrites etc etc..

SecondRow · 27/11/2020 16:09

Yes that's how I meant it NiceGerbil, that they are appropriating women's fight around abortion to position elective surgery as essential healthcare and as the only possible therapy for "being trans".

notyourhandmaid · 27/11/2020 16:18

Finding Irish Twitter very depressing at the moment. The number of people lecturing and denouncing a female journalist for sharing an article. Jesus.

(I know Twitter is not the world. But as someone wise noted on another thread, it's very journalist/politics/charity-heavy and it has a disproportionate impact.)

That book on unsafe surgeries sounds appalling. The desperation and fear that many trans people seem to feel is something that is actively stirred up and is so out of sync with actual risk and normal human responses... healthcare is absolutely needed but it's a mental health issue. These are vulnerable people, absolutely - but they are being victimised by the trans rights movement, not by the rest of the world.

NiceGerbil · 27/11/2020 17:28

Sorry second missed that- yes of course you're right.

Is there any argument they make that they haven't stolen from another movement?

xxyzz · 27/11/2020 18:21

No.

You're right @SecondRow went through ICCL's recent press releases and they're all against the State or EU, nothing about NGO's or private companies etc and they have partenered with Amnesty on several occassions so it is probably some sort of gentlemans agreement. I know I heard them speak out about Church control several times so I guess thats why I was misstaken.

Absolute cowardice that they haven't said anything when NGO's are calling to limit freedom of expression, makes me think of the JKR quote “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 27/11/2020 20:20

Paul Howard has tweeted again about it.. The more exposure the better. There's such a suggestion that people can't be allowed think or discuss that it's frightening.
