Hi everyone. #WeWillBeHeard is trending on twitter in Ireland. It is in reponse to Amnesty International, the National Women's Council of Ireland and other major NGO's calling for people who "defend biology" or who are gender critical to be disenfranchised.

Their words: "..Let us say unequivocally that the statements of newly launched organisations that seek to defend biology or fight gender identity and expression do not represent the wider LGBTI+ community nor feminists in Ireland... We call on media, and politicians to no longer provide legitimate representation for those that share bigoted beliefs."

This is a thread with pictures and the hastag which is trending

A response letter from The Countess didn't fight for this thecountessdidntfightforthis.com/we-will-be-heard/

And an archived copy of the original ridiculous letter they are replying to (usual tropes about being far right etc) archive.is/glPXl#selection-1561.0-1561.202

Comerford spends a lot of time online for someone with two autistic daughters.

He wrote a book about them, I'm not bringing it up out of nowhere.

Is he a comedian or something?

MarDhea · 26/11/2020 18:48

Yeah, there's a lot of menz telling Róisín that her thinking is wrong, that she's doing womaning wrong, etc. etc.

How telling.

There's plenty of women too, but the tweets from men have a common tone (and an inordinate fondness for facial hair).

The thing about being a writer is, you have to stand over your words.
She is right to just let it lie til they move onto the next victim.
Stick it out Roisin.

SophocIestheFox · 26/11/2020 19:03

That comerford chap would have got on great under Joseph McCarthy: “Are you now or have you ever been a Known Twitter Transphobe?”.

How keen some men are to tell women we don’t know what’s good for us. How very keen. And how little I respect that sort of man.

Weatherwarning · 26/11/2020 19:15

@Duckwit

Never fear, Aidan is on the case!

Something tells me Roisin won't be downloading 'Shinigami Eyes', eeeeeeeek!

That does come across as having threatening undertones.

I am laughing at the one saying her non transphobic friends need to re-educate her. Silly woman whose purity of thought was corrupted. Good to know the wrong think can be corrected. Wink

Quite. "We've got a list. There's a system. You don't want to be marked in red, like these people, do you? Do you? We can put you on that list, no problem."

Here is the totally not creepy looking 'Shinigami Eyes' twitter account.

Roisín's words were carefully chosen. I think what irritates me most about the "Suzanne's a transphobe you know" responses is that... the piece wasn't about one thing. It was a look back over a good couple of decades of Suzanne's career and a whole lot of things that happened and observations she made about the different kinds of people she worked with and wrote about. Funny how they've no curiosity about WHAT resonated with Roisín. Reducing Suzanne's life in journalism to the one thing they think they know about her.

But yeah I dare say Roisín knew what she was opening herself up to but I sincerely hope she's not too shaken by who ends up turning on her or who stays silent (at best).

Abhannmor · 26/11/2020 20:01

@contactusdeletus

I wonder how many women have stopped donating to Amnesty over this debacle?

I did, and let them know exactly why.

My ex just did , after decades as a member.
SecondRow · 26/11/2020 20:09

Ooh, Duckwit, that might come in handy so I can see how much support Roisin's getting without having to read all the drivel Wink

Abhannmor · 26/11/2020 20:10
@Weatherwarning, I knew him years ago and he really is very nice, but loves to get people upset (which is why I love reading him).
Have loathed him since his slimy and disingenuous defence of the torture at Abu Ghraib. The fact our views coincide on this is just very 2020 tbh !

NiceGerbil · 26/11/2020 20:49

I stopped over the right to sex stuff a few years back.

Just reading through the Twitter stuff.

The letter is up on change and they have altered it. WTF?

Rather than address/ explain it. They just delete a part and then say this this the letter what's the problem...?

And it's been signed by massive charities etc.

It seems that now there are so many words everywhere they have become so cheap that people can alter stuff and just think that's a fine thing to do. Even with the evidence of what they have done. And just not engage with any questions/ challenges etc.

The whole trajectory of things is really worrying. The world seems to be turning back in so many ways. Becoming more tribal, insular. Anti science.

This alteration of a letter with no note to say it's been done or why or anything is just bizarre to me. Basic honesty is a massive deal to me. It freaks me out tbh that people who presumably see themselves as good kind decent etc can sit down and say. Oh yeah that bits a bit dodgy actually. What shall we do? Oh just delete it and if anyone says WTF just ignore them....

?????

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 26/11/2020 21:06

That's appalling. There's such a sinister tone to a lot of this, it gives me the creeps, it's different to other disagreements in that way.

A life’s work and some excellent feminist activity down the wazoo because she dares to raise questions. She even mentions lovely trans people that helped her and that she’s not bothered about spaces.
Cailleach1 · 26/11/2020 21:37

So, have they changed the letter that the crowd of women hating gobshites actually signed? Are they now pretending they signed a different one; one which wasn't advocating for that women's voices and political representation be removed if stood up for their rights.

If so, would that not be lying by omission? Well worse really, as they are hiding/ doctoring what they did. Are those the depths to which @Amnasty have sunk? Along with all the other gobshites.

I'm v.v. cross and calling a gobshite 'a gobshite' is a satisfying vent. Sleveens and gobshites, the lot.

Yeah, ,Chaka, and I'd be prepared to bet Roisin's reply guys have never read a full column of Suzanne's in their lives - being about, yunno, wimmin's stuff - and definitely didn't read the whole, long, UnHerd article. The criticisms of it being long and meandering, as if column inches are a finite resource on the internet, not to be squandered on women's witterings, are just another way of saying the public realm was never really women's to occupy on our own terms.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 26/11/2020 22:02

Interesting tweet from Paul Howard regarding a friend who's getting a mauling.. Must be RI. Will he join her?

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 26/11/2020 22:04

It definitely is her as all being discussed in the thread twitter.com/AkaPaulHoward/status/1332029440944123906?s=19

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 26/11/2020 22:06

Ooh and Alison Curtis has liked it tho she has tweeted a few time against JKR.

SecondRow · 26/11/2020 22:25

Hey, HeyGirl :) Thanks for the link. Can't keep up with twatter today...

I find it interesting that a fair few of Paul Howard's followers don't know who he's referring to. Roisin has loads of followers but I'm betting a large proportion of them are women. No wonder she "gets" Suzanne and the guyz don't get her!

NiceGerbil · 26/11/2020 23:13

NiceGerbil · 26/11/2020 23:14

Second thing down in green shows that change letter is different to original.

NiceGerbil · 26/11/2020 23:17

Ok so that's the original one.

I'm heading over to change to see the one on there. Having had the displeasure of ploughing through the sodding thing earlier it's the least I can do!
