Irish women will be heard (trending)

Hi everyone. #WeWillBeHeard is trending on twitter in Ireland. It is in reponse to Amnesty International, the National Women's Council of Ireland and other major NGO's calling for people who "defend biology" or who are gender critical to be disenfranchised.

Their words: "..Let us say unequivocally that the statements of newly launched organisations that seek to defend biology or fight gender identity and expression do not represent the wider LGBTI+ community nor feminists in Ireland... We call on media, and politicians to no longer provide legitimate representation for those that share bigoted beliefs."

This is a thread with pictures and the hastag which is trending

A response letter from The Countess didn't fight for this thecountessdidntfightforthis.com/we-will-be-heard/

And an archived copy of the original ridiculous letter they are replying to (usual tropes about being far right etc) archive.is/glPXl#selection-1561.0-1561.202

SecondRow Roísin Ingle re-tweeted Jenni Murray's article about leaving Women's Hour too.

Very few responses, almost like people were keeping their heads down. Despite that, there was only one person who dared argue with Roísin, a man (who worked at a maternity hospital) who tried to do More Inclusive than Thou and accused Jenni of being a t*. He deleted the comment and deactivated his account in response to the mockery.

Sunset, no, not really. I may have wandered off down some other Twitter rabbit holes but they don't seem to be catching the flak in the same way O'Gorman is.

I remember with the HSE cervix thing the NWCI just completely blanked everyone who tweeted at them so maybe everyone's given up. I have to admit I haven't formulated anything myself that I feel could provoke them into an answer but I'm still anonymous on Twitter myself so that's a disadvantage.

Seatime · 25/11/2020 10:52

Suzanne Moore wrote 'Why I Had to Leave The Guardian' in UnHerd. It is an excellent read.

Weatherwarning · 25/11/2020 11:01

@SecondRow

As this is kind of the current Irish thread I wanted to mention that Roisin Ingle tweeted Suzanne Moore's brilliant long piece on why she left the Guardian

twitter.com/roisiningle/status/1331504787582570497?s=19

Someone on here said a few months ago they thought Roisin "gets it"... I admit I was skeptical whether she'd ever properly put her head above the parapet. She'll get the snide Irish Twitter blowback for this but how much will be interesting. She's beloved, but still a woman, so... 🤷🏼‍♀️

Glad to see that I also saw Ian O''Doherty wrote an article in Saturdays Independent about cancel culture He did refer to JKR and the trans debate, and clearly was very critical of the treatment of Suzanne Moore. I feel he would have a lot to say about the letter signed by NCWI, Amnesty (and I think retweeted by Paul Murphy TD?). It will be interesting to see if the Independent will allow him to comment.
SecondRow · 25/11/2020 11:03

Yes Pothole I know she hasn't blundered into anything because she's tested the waters before now. Didn't know the guy left Twitter. Interesting in that he couldn't just leave a disagreement stand.

Same kind of response this time round "supporting a known bigot/transphobe, your conduct has been noted" kind of tone to it, as always without any constructive discussion of what's objectionable about Suzanne's piece.

The NWCI are a waste of time. Their very slow (even reluctant?))response to the cervical check,, *people with a cervix" controversy showed them for what they really are. The veneer of wokeness was far more important than the word woman. That kind of feminism is so 20th century you know 🙄
PotholeParadies · 25/11/2020 11:21

It was only a temporary absence from twitter. I think that once it was pointed out to him, he realised the optics of being a man, shouting down women like Jenni Murray for being the wrong kind of feminist, while publicly representing a maternity hospital.

I don't agree with getting people sacked for having the wrong views on twitter, but I do approve of women telling such men to pull their heads out of their arses when they make a bloody living from organisations that only exist because of women's biological reality! Perhaps there was a danger of the former, thus his retreat.

I wonder how many women have stopped donating to Amnesty over this debacle?

I did, and let them know exactly why.

littlbrowndog · 25/11/2020 11:33

Amnesty turned off their replies. The cowards

irishfeminist · 25/11/2020 11:33

The NWCI recently appointed this person to their board so that tells you all you need to know.

I know, Irishfeminist – the very next day they tweeted about quotas on corporate boards. Quotas for women, one presumes, but what's the need if they can be filled by women and men? May the best womanly woman win!

SecondRow · 25/11/2020 11:57

Also, as weather warning says, the NWCI's belated and reluctant response to being asked to weigh in on the HSE dropping the word woman came only after they'd consulted with TENI and reassured us they would be consulted on any new wording. Again, why, FFS? If the National Women's Council isn't confident saying the word women must be used in essential women's healthcare without taking a sensitivity check... Aargh. I'm not over it Biscuit

Annasgirl · 25/11/2020 12:15

Well that was wonderful to read - although there was some awful stuff in there amongst the support. I suppose I say awful because I never go on Twitter except to support items like this, so I don't get into the cesspit (but it really would damage your mental health to spend more than 1/2 an hour on it, I think).

I agree that Roisin might break ranks and definitely Ian but, while I often agree with him, Ian is a known contrarian.

Lol, he is a known contrarian, which is probably why I like him. Grin There are occasions where I disagree with him, but he is very outspoken about cancel culture, no platforming, the perpetually offended etc. He is probably the only mainstream Irish journalist who isn't afraid to say it as he sees it, and I respect him for that.
Annasgirl · 25/11/2020 12:33

@Weatherwarning, I knew him years ago and he really is very nice, but loves to get people upset (which is why I love reading him).

I said I think Róisín gets it and I saw her tweet this morning and I still think she gets it but she's waiting. She would be openly pro trans otherwise I'll bet. She posted something last year and I queried her on it mentioning her daughters, no reply and she's fairly robust. I like to think she couldn't defend it re ssafe spaces.. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her..

SecondRow · 26/11/2020 16:50

Roisín's getting the "so disappointing" pushback now, over a hundred reply tweets and I assume more I'm blocked from seeing. Not sure if she's engaged again, probably best not to.

7Days · 26/11/2020 17:04

I hope she holds firm.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 26/11/2020 17:41

So far she hasn't engaged she's posted a few things before this, feelers perhaps. My feeling is she's thought this through and will hold firm. I wonder will she bring Marian Keyes say with her. I don't expect Marian to speak out now but at same time not to do a Nicola Coghlan/Alison Curtis on it. One of the OMHWACA girls retweeted re feminism including the trans community.. It's even obvious from that they can't say trans women as obviously transmen would be included..!

Duckwit · 26/11/2020 18:24

Never fear, Aidan is on the case!

Something tells me Roisin won't be downloading 'Shinigami Eyes', eeeeeeeek!

Yikes!! That feels like a bit of a threat tbh.

''Transphobic accounts''. Without downloading the app, I have a feeling these 'transphobic accounts' will just be people who know what a woman is, yes?
