I've just seen this on Twitter. That'll be even more lost readers then. Not that I'm one of their readers.

She says it was her choice to go

Wonder what she'll do next. She helped make me a feminist as a young un in the 90s. I salute her!

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/11/2020 21:28

Did I imagine it - I thought that they were getting rid of LOJ as well ?

Scout2016 · 16/11/2020 21:31

I read on one of Glinner's mailouts that the Guardian didn't renew Little Owen's contract. Are they getting rid of both sides to start again?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/11/2020 21:32

This is now trending on Twitter. Julie Bindell has commented on it, amongst others.

Scout thanks that's where I read it.

SmallPug · 16/11/2020 21:36

@Mashingthecompost and @Woods52 - Unherd, The critic, Spiked (online). The Times, the economist and the spectator (online spectator has more diverse stuff than the actual magazine). People question spiked but they publish a range of authors with different views.

RuffleCrow · 16/11/2020 21:38

I think she, Hadley and anyone else who's not shit at the guardian should start their own paper. Blah blah blah death of print media blah blah blah...I think it's been exaggerated quite frankly. If toilet paper like the graun can keep going despitr being largely garbage then there must be market for something that makes sense and is readable.

lekkerkroketje · 16/11/2020 21:45

The Economist is GC and very good for analysis, but they do tend to treat anyone outside the London/Brussels/Washington metropolitan elite as a foreign species to be observed with curiosity. Their monthly lifestyle magazine is lousy though.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/11/2020 21:45

gary linekar tweeted 'sorry to hear that.'

cue the wailing mostly from fellas, 'no, gary, no.' 'are you a terf, gary'

urgh.

Janice Turner giving The Guardian & a certain male columnist a going over for hounding out Suzanne and hosting Frankie Boyle:

If she is leaving then I am leaving. I have deleted the app and hidden the guardian on my Google feed. Might resubscribe to the times.

Yes the Frankie Boyle stuff makes me sick. On what planet is it the ‘right side of history’ to joke about rape and disabled children? It makes so angry the way the woke crowd just turn a blind eye to this malicious and disgusting stuff that was completely outrageous when Boyle was performing it (so no excuse that times have moved on) and when he was a fully grown adult. Yet if any woman has so much as liked a GC tweet in her life, she is hounded to death for it and never forgiven.

ArabellaScott · 16/11/2020 22:23

Every so often I forget what Frankie Boyle said and have to go and check.

It is always worse than I'd remembered. Abhorrent things.

I'm a bit speechless at the obituary for the Ripper. Who was it that fundraised for a museum of women's rights that turned out to be a Ripper museum?

We are through the looking glass.

ArabellaScott · 16/11/2020 22:34

Guardian alternatives - I still browse the site sometimes, but don't buy it. I just try to look at lots of different sources. Reuters, Times, Spectator, Herald, some of the online sites like Counter Punch, BBC, Mail, Telegraph, The Sun, small local papers. And take all of it with a large pinch of salt. The media is in a difficult place right now. I am less and less inclined to read some of the 'columnists' that now pass for journalists - so much of it is just loud opinion. A few writers are worth reading, but one can find any amount of opinions on social media - what I really want and miss is quality reporting.

It was something to do with the Diva/awards owner - a relative?

Interesting. I just noticed that Squealer now has a patreon. Is he setting up some sort of woke Pravda or something?
HecatesCats · 16/11/2020 23:02

I'm really enjoying newsletters atm Glosswitch's, Helen Lewis's Blue Stocking, Oliver Burkeman's Imperfectionist. I like Stephen Bush's Morning Call from the New Statesman (his take on the latest news plus links elsewhere) and Prospect Magazine.

AnotherLass · 16/11/2020 23:08

I haven't seen any confirmation of their not renewing Owen Jones's contract. I think it was just rumour & speculation on the basis that he was crowdfunding to make his own media, but he could be doing both.

NotBadConsidering · 17/11/2020 02:55

Good for her, she’s been treated appallingly. It’s such an awful publication these days.

Woods52 · 17/11/2020 06:42

Thank you @SmallPug! Much appreciated!

SmallPug · 17/11/2020 07:48

Agree with HecatesCat about the newsletters. Glosswitch’s is very good. I’ve just got into Helen Lewis’s and Caroline CP does one too.

Tootsweets23 · 17/11/2020 07:49

Kath Viner has been a disaster - not just on this issue but many others. Her inability to protect the paper's liberal values in the face of authoritarian bullies inside and outside the organisation will damage the paper for years to come. She never understood that she had a duty and the the power to stand up to them, and if she had the tone of this bloody debate would have changed. No idea what the finances are like but editorially she has been terrible.

highame · 17/11/2020 07:51

AnotherLass did he (LOJ) raise any cash? or are his fan club a bit strapped

ScrapThatThen · 17/11/2020 08:04

I am really impressed with the 'joining the dots' and investigating journalism in Private Eye. It's a slightly impenetrable format at times but really exposes the cess pit of politics that we have.
