I've just seen this on Twitter. That'll be even more lost readers then. Not that I'm one of their readers.

@DrDavidBanner

I was unaware that the Guardian ran an obituary on Peter Sutcliffe.

DAFUK???? Shock

Well, it wasn't complimentary in any fashion. It was interesting - it put his heinous crimes front & centre & contextualised the appalling paths he chose.

The Guardian covered the shocking mismanagement of his crimes comprehensively throughout the main paper & Comment sections.

So disappointing. She and Hadley main reason for reading. Fingers crossed new column somewhere soon.

That's sad, but she was far too good for them.

I was done with The Guardian years ago. I'd rather read The Daily Mail these days. Their feminist articles are far better and far fairer.

I'd argue that this leaves no need for an obituary. I wonder if Suzanne's reaction to the obituary was the final straw?

O that's sad. Viner seems hell-bent on sacrificing the graun at the altar of wokeism.

John Crace is still worth reading

and the Mail is FULL of misogynist crap

but I do begin to wonder

I'd started looking at it again recently, I bought it for years and at one point I was a subscriber but now I subscribe to The Times, my 20-something self would have been horrified. Back to boycotting it then....

Used to be a Guardian reader, now I buy the Saturday Times and the Spectator. I’ve decided I need my views challenge and be allowed to disagree with articles in a grown up way, which both these publications allow me to do whilst reading writing by exceptional people too.

@Quillink that's what I thought. Editorial solidarity and all that, even though they showed none to her. That petition organised against her by her colleagues - just awful.

But she has just tweeted that it was entirely her choice to go

Flowers Suzanne.

I don't know how she's stuck it out so long. Its been miserable watching the once proud Manchester Guardian slowly turn into the hipster version of the Independent.

Will Freddy M be back then? I always thought, perhaps wrongly, that Freddy left because of Suzanne.

Oh no.

She was one of the very few journalists left at the Graun who had any principles. The way she's been bullied was outrageous.

@Mashingthecompost I agree! All suggestions welcome...
CNN app is good for international, but would love a decent outlet for intelligent domestic stuff (without having to hand money over to Murdoch’s evil empire). New Statesman is OK, just obvs very Labour centric. Spectator again good for a free browse, but just too posh/Tory to actually buy.
There’s definitely room for something better. Hope someone takes notice!

A big loss for the guardian, and very unsurprising given their direction of travel...

I look forward to seeing her join a paper that respects her views and her writing.

I don't blame her. It really has come to a pretty pass when, as a PP pointed out, the Daily Mail has better feminist content than the Guardian! But I agree that, even though some of its content is still shockingly misogynistic, it does. Which doesn't say much for the Guardian.

I really do need to take out a subscription to something.

@Quillink

Suzanne's tweet previous to announcing her departure called the obituary disgusting. Good for her.

Yep. So much for #SayHerName. Their lives are disposable. His gets an obituary.

That’s so sad. I’m amazed she stuck it out for as long as she did after That Letter.

Imagine working somewhere that purports to represent the fourth estate- supposedly to uphold the voice of the people in critiquing and holding the establishment to account- and being a signatory to that letter. What do they imagine a newspaper is for? Hugs and pats on the head for toeing the line like a good girl? I can’t even begin to articulate what I think of a management that allowed the supporters of that letter free rein, in effect enabling and encouraging bullying of a staff member because of her views. It pains me to imagine being Suzanne, and having to go into work knowing not just that your colleagues have called for you to be sacked for your own personal views, but that the management don’t apparently want to do anything much about this.

I hope she takes them to a tribunal.

I read the Graun for twenty plus years and the last ten have been like a crap relationship, I just keep hoping they’ll change. They’ve only got Hadley and Marina that are any good now, even John Crace seems to have lost his edge.

It was the only paper I bought, what the fuck happened.

Perfect example of how the left only ever paid lip service to feminism. Never walked the walk.

They'll be a reckonin' some day.

Well that's The Guardian finally written off (haven't actually read The Guardian for a long time, even as a freebee from Waitrose, it got that bad).

I only discovered Suzanne Moore recently from here - she is spectacular. Like a proper firework - she goes Bang, you think WTF, and when you read her piece, it is so beautifully put together and rains sparks.

She can put out a small tweet and hits the nail straight on the head.

I look forward to buying whatever publishes her work.
