twitter.com/MeUndies/status/1321127734601379842?s=20

Retailer called MeUndies announces new range of Harry Potter themed pyjamas. Attracts predictable responses. Also, notably, huge kickback against the first few woke replies.

This person has utterly lost the plot. No attempt to engage with any replies, of course. I'd have said alleging JKR is advocating violence against trans people was libellous.

Brands continue to disappoint, but @MeUndies takes the cake this week. For a purported LGBTQI friendly brand their Harry Potter partnership upset me. I wrote them and asked them not to support anything that helps a TERF profit, and they said no. Don't buy their stuff. Ever.

Seriously, multiple super-defensive and dismissive emails that they've done enough for the LGBTQI folx out there. You can't hurt people with a campaign like this and not care, say you've done enough in the past, @medundies. Your greed is showing.

Seriously, this wanton disregard for the safety of LGBTQI folx makes me hope that @MeUndies takes a serious hit to their bottom line. Soft underwear is everywhere, people. Buy the stuff that doesn't support campaigns and voices that advocate violence against trans folx.

So they caved? What are they going to do with all the garments they have already paid to be manufactured and the very lucrative license they are throwing away?

chunkyrun · 31/10/2020 16:15

On a happier note m&s Harry Potter range has been lapped up with few negative comments

@Whatsnewpussyhat, they're not scrapping the new product line. They say they can't afford to do that. However, they don't plan to make any more HP products and they've issued a cringing apology for any offence caused, which has annoyed those who stood up for them this week.

I don't really see this as caving. Caving would be endless grovelling (like they expect) and pulling the line totally.

Unfortunately, they will find out that any 'compromise' (disavowing JK but keeping the line) is NOT good enough, as whats expected it total capitulation to what they shout. So I cannot see this stopping the attacks somehow, I can actually see it being made worse..as they see that their whining gets a reaction, so more whining might get the HP stuff gone totally Hmm

Beamur · 31/10/2020 17:49

They won't ditch it. They will have invested too much in the stock.

SunsetScreech · 31/10/2020 18:12

I'm sure they will do well from it too. Most people are not on twitter and won't see the whining.

Apparently some of the M&S stuff has sold out already.

What they have done is the worst of both worlds.

They'll take the profit from the sales which is pretty hypocritical and will lose any sales from people who would have stood up for them.

FairFridaythe13th · 31/10/2020 21:14

Maybe whoever manages the copyrights might decide that they are damaging the brand and withdraw their contract?

FWRLurker · 01/11/2020 14:43

Social media caving is annoying but TBH probably is a nothing burger. 99.9% of their customers do not follow them on Twitter. If this sells well they’ll do another line, this time without tweeting about it, because they are a company whose purpose is to make money, end of.

If they fire someone for this otoh then I’ll be pissed. Otherwise it’s whatever.

queenofknives · 01/11/2020 19:02

I'm not sure I'd call it grovelling. What I read said they disagree with JK's comments (fair enough, it's a free country) and they support and do stuff for the alphabet people. They didn't actually say sorry, even. I thought that was fairly calm and sane as these things go. Or was there a later apology as well?

FWRLurker · 02/11/2020 00:05

I think it’s odd to say “we as a company disagree” unless literally every employee in the company was asked their views anonymously and all disagreed with JKR (which obviously is not the case). If they’d said “company leadership disagrees” or “the ceo disagrees” then fine.

Malahaha · 02/11/2020 06:48

Update on another thread; MeUndies responds to a letter of enquiry asking what exactly JKR said that they disagree with.

bellinisurge · 02/11/2020 06:56

It's odd. My wish to buy HP merch increases daily. I never used to be up for that sort of thing.

queenofknives · 02/11/2020 07:48

I don't think companies should have opinions about stuff like this! Just make pyjamas, that's all they have to do! I wish more companies would go the Spectator route and just tell complainers where to go. To be fair to MeUndies they seem to be trying to keep everyone happy... obviously won't work, but I can appreciate they're trying!

ParadeOfRemotes · 02/11/2020 08:03

It's so divisive where it doesn't have to be. Following this debacle over the past few days I thought MeUndies were firmly in the TRA camp with the statement that they 'disagreed' with JKR statement (thank you for the link to the letters - exactly my first thought when people say they 'disagree')

Now the utter pasting they are still getting from the mad TRAs makes me rethink.

I do feel sorry for small businesses, happily going about making merchandise that people want, only to become the centre of a crazy-storm.

The M&A stuff is gorgeous. Boden also did beautiful HP stuff, they might still have some in stock.

My DS is only 4 and obviously hasn't read the stories or seen the films but he loves HP from seeing Lego HP. I was idly thinking last night about how on earth I'm going to begin to explain this stuff to him in only a few years.

ParadeOfRemotes · 02/11/2020 08:04

M&S not M&A. Never seen gorgeous Harry Potter mergers and acquisitions related items HmmSmile

Damn, was interested in this, and its deleted apparently. :(

ParadeOfRemotes · 05/11/2020 07:45

That's annoying. It was an interesting/measured letter from the OP and response from the company. I'm not sure what MNHQ concerns are as I didn't read beyond the original post. Do we need to write to them to find out? Wink

PostItJoyWeek · 05/11/2020 10:48

The thread showed the email that had been sent directly to the customer who had asked what MeUnds objected to about JKR. It was not an email issued as a public statement. It included the name of an employee. I think that's why it was taken down. Various posters pretty much immediately pointed out that the employee was being put at risk on MN.

ParadeOfRemotes · 05/11/2020 13:55

Ah yes of course, that makes sense. The employee sounded lovely although I still don't agree with the stance the company have taken.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 11/11/2020 15:06

Saw this yesterday on Facebook, for goodness sake no one can sell HP merchandise anymore without the required amount of pandering to ease the mob Angry

Still hasn't stopped one commenter calling JKR a piece of *&$! though.

How does Mermaid support LGB people? Haven't they made homophobic comments in the past?

StrippedFridge · 11/11/2020 18:46

Clearly they've been subjected to a shakedown.

Extortion is wrong.

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 11/11/2020 21:16

Mermaids don’t give a flying fuck about LGB people.
