Poland bans almost all abortions

Frightening,

'Poland's top court has ruled that abortions in cases of foetal defects are unconstitutional.

...

Once the decision comes into effect, terminations will only be allowed in cases of rape or incest, or if the mother's health is at risk.'

Read this with dismay, it's effectively a ban as it accounts for 98% of current abortions in Poland. Poor women.

ArabellaScott · 22/10/2020 17:18

I hate the feeling we are losing all of the rights we've fought so hard for.

They're so fragile aren't they and so easily rolled back.

Babdoc · 22/10/2020 17:21

I share the concern. I can only hope that all women qualify for a termination under the threat to health clause, as a term pregnancy and labour are more life threatening than a termination. So any sympathetic Polish doctor has a loophole to go ahead.

ArabellaScott · 22/10/2020 17:38

It's a bit mystifying, according to that article, doesn't even seem that people had pushed for it. Women's rights get attacked at times of national stress.

But yes, Babdoc, let's hope there are still ways women who need them can access safe abortion. Apparently many go abroad for treatment at the moment.

That's horrific.

Awful news. Sad

NiceGerbil · 22/10/2020 17:57

They have tried a couple of times before recently and got pushback.

Gutted for women and girls in Poland.

SunsetBeetch · 22/10/2020 18:05

Wow Sad

SimonJT · 22/10/2020 18:09

I just saw this, “rape or incest” as if rape or incest would ever actually be proved to allow an abortion to go ahead. Some very worrying things have been happening in Poland recently.

OvaHere · 22/10/2020 18:09

Not good news, not just for women either. Some foetal defects are incompatible with life so this means a not insignificant number of infants are destined for a brief and painful life. There's no kindness in that.

FairFridaythe13th · 22/10/2020 19:04

What is happening? And in Norway it looks like you can get 3 years jail for misgendering someone - and you can bet your boots it will be women filling up the jails. It seems like a worldwide clamp down on women.

ArabellaScott · 22/10/2020 19:28

It seems like a worldwide clamp down on women.

It does. And no, it's nothing to do with kindness, never has been. Just about control. Anyone who's ever had to deal with any of the issues that are very, very quickly very obvious would know it's a horribly cruel thing to take away legal, safe abortion.

I'm probably going to regret posting this on the feminism board but it could be a good thing for some foetuses who might otherwise have been aborted but who actually could live a happy life. My sister is severely disabled and the fact that someone could abort a child with her condition makes me feel sick, it's basically saying her life isn't worth living.

I do think abortion should be safe, free and legal but I wish we could have a more nuanced discussion than 'my body my choice' and a recognition that more than one life is being weighed here.

popcorndreams · 22/10/2020 19:43

This is just so awful. Really sad to hear this today.

ArabellaScott · 22/10/2020 19:45

It's not saying that at all. I'm all for nuanced discussion, but please don't try and twist people's words into things they've not said.

But any of us could have been aborted? I'm sure you love your sister dearly and feel protective of her. I know I do with my sister but what would uyiu have happen?

How distressing do you think it is to carry an unwanted baby to term? Who is going to look after these babies? Some of whom will have disabilities?

So would it be a good thing for a child to be born to a mother who does not want them, healthy or otherwise?

So it would be a good thing to force a woman to continue a pregnancy that she doesnt want to????

ThistleWitch · 22/10/2020 19:49

erm but I wish we could have a more nuanced discussion than 'my body my choice' - no, its my body, its my choice, not yours, not some random politician, MY CHOICE

bathsh3ba · 22/10/2020 19:49

It is saying that the life of the woman who chooses to abort a foetus like her is more important than that of the foetus, ie her life has less value.

Cocothefirst · 22/10/2020 19:50

No, it's not about your sister. Yes, the woman is more important than the foetus. It IS her body, her choice.

That's right, the woman whose body is carrying the foetus IS more important than the foetus, the woman's life DOES have more value.
