Facemasks on for a trip to the Bluestocking

We haven't had a Bluestocking thread for fucking ages.

Anyone fancy a socially distanced, tables of no more than 6, Bluestocking?

The goat has been covid tested and the patriarchy busting canon polished up to remove all possible virus traces from its surface.

Remember, MN spans the globe, and it's always before the 10pm curfew somewhere.

Blindingly, I was given some 'proper' black peppercorns as a gift and really noticed the difference in the flavour and what a kick it has. Your gran was right!

Blindingly0bvious · 24/10/2020 09:49

Indeed she was, Tofu and I will never forget nor be able to properly recreate her oatmeal stuffing. With pepper.

BTW just putting it out there but we have discovered Waitrose vegetarian haggis and it is freakily not bad.

TofuDelights · 24/10/2020 09:58

Black pepper is essential in bashed neeps too! Very disappointed with the neep I bashed recently, maybe it's not the right time of year yet. Shame we don't have a local Waitrose, veggie haggis sounds great! I'm now thinking about broth, proper broth, with carrots, leeks and pearl barley, yum. And a good crack of black pepper, of course!

midgebabe · 24/10/2020 10:13

The veggie haggis was not a patch on the real thing , for my taste buds anyway

But ooh yeah, proper broth now the nights are drawing in

EBearhug · 24/10/2020 10:30

Isn't the Waitrose one MacSween? It is in my local Waitrose, anyway. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian haggis.

TheChampagneGalop · 24/10/2020 10:33

Good morning Brew
A bit too early for haggis veggie or otherwise I think Halloween Grin
What is everyone up to today? I'm just knackered and look forward to a lazy day.

ArabellaScott · 24/10/2020 10:49

I don't mind veggie haggis. Can do vegan white pudding with left-over porridge, too [showing off scavenging/culinary skills]:

Vegan white pudding

Left-over porridge/oatmeal
finely chopped onion
spices: nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, salt, pepper (any other spice you fancy)
flour to make into dough

fry in patties. It's honestly very nice.

MaudTheInvincible · 24/10/2020 10:53

What is white pudding made of usually? I only ever have it when visiting relatives in Ireland, and have never really worked out what it is.

Coffee here Brew

SophocIestheFox · 24/10/2020 10:56

suet, isn’t it?

Breakfast haggis is a key component of a full Scottish, along with tattie scones. boak, imo bit there you go Grin

quite fancy that white pudding recipe, i have oatmeal. yum!

SophocIestheFox · 24/10/2020 10:57

the haggis is boak, not the tattie scones, which are food of the gods!!

ArabellaScott · 24/10/2020 11:21

Yes, usually beef suet. I make my porridge with milk, so mine's not vegan, but you could easily do it with water.

Also had some success with fried banana skin 'facon' this summer. Banana skins scraped, marinated in soy sauce, with garlic powder & smoked paprika, fried.

No no no, tell me it isn't so. Some cold hearted mean spirited carnivore came up with this to fuck up vegans, amirite? Facon sounds like a crime against food Shock

TofuDelights · 24/10/2020 12:29

Banana skin facon?! That's a new one on me! Haven't had white pudding for ages! Arabella, do you have to cook the onion first or does it go in raw? Sounds delicious BTW! I am keeping my banana skins to ripen the last of this year's tomatoes. Yes to EBear, MacSweens veggie haggis is really good. Lazy day here too I think, thank goodness it's the weekend Brew

Lemonyfuckit · 24/10/2020 13:02

Afternoon, are you open yet? It's a trifle early but could I have a very dirty vodka martini please. Extremely dirty. I've done my regular lazy weekend morning of reading all the depressing things the woke stasi have been saying and I feel in need of sustenance and sisterhood.

On the white pudding chat, has anyone found Scottish white pudding for sale down south? Have only managed to find Irish and it seems very different. MIL does however post us some down along with a supply of rowies....

CaraDuneRedux · 24/10/2020 13:09

One vodka martini so dirty you could splash it on the back of a dirty white van and it wouldn't change the colour coming right up...

I'm an omnivore, I like the facon! Even just as an experiment in what can be eaten in a post-Brexit-Covid rationing era. Smile And banana skins are apparently quite nutritious.

And no, I don't cook the onions first, Tofu.

Right, yardarm is achieved, time for a livener.

Lemonyfuckit · 24/10/2020 13:23

Many thanks, your very good health all!

WarOnWomen · 24/10/2020 13:56

I like leftover curry for breakfast sometimes. But then I used to eat spoonfuls of powdered milk when I was younger. Spoonfuls of dry Horlicks too.

boatyardblues · 24/10/2020 14:35

There was a frightening amount of gin in this week’s shop. The pandemic restrictions were slightly more bearable when the sun was shining. Not so much when every day is like a wet weekend and it’s so dark.

boatyardblues · 24/10/2020 14:36

I’ll start with a Long Island Iced Tea please, barkeep.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2020 14:41

Today is exactly like a wet weekend. I'll be quite glad when the clocks change tonight, I think, it was just too dark this morning.

DH is doing a massive bread baking session, sticking up the freezer with homemade wholemeal and oatbran pittas. (They're very good, and don't spike his blood sugar). I'm working through a huge backlog of ironing. I got round to listening to tuesdays woman's hour during the first lot.m

Brewteabreak now, of course.

Ugh at the weather.

Oat bran pitta bread sounds delicious. Recipe?

You just reminded me, tea and chocolate break.

Womantheonlykind · 24/10/2020 14:52

Been out to collect the windfall from the storm so an afternoon of peeling apples for me.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2020 14:53

It's just a pita bread recipe but made with wholemeal flour, substituting around 20% of the flour with oatbran. We do ours without salt because of his BP, so the oat gives flavour and texture.

highame · 24/10/2020 14:54

dry Horlicks memories of childhood, thanks Waron
