Woman's Hour 20 October: Has Mumnset become too politicised?

I assume this is about the the audacity to criticise the gender identity ideology. I wonder if they'll have a proper discussion. Remember that Jenni Murray only felt free to talk only as she was walking out of the door.

Oh, I joined Women's Register just after the name change and old hands were still calling it Housewives': I never knew Mumsnet was an offshoot but it makes so much sense.

Women's register kept me sane through three babies in three years!

Destinysdaughter · 19/10/2020 23:30

Not sure if I even want to listen to this tbh, I find WH to be middle-class wank most of the time. But I KNOW this thread about it will be bloody brilliant! Grin

Pluckedpencil · 20/10/2020 05:29

Just thinking about this. I would DEFINITELY listen to an UNEDITED Mumsnet hour podcast. You could have one about baby formula for the people who think that's what Mumsnet is, and then a a separate hour for the real Mumsnet, where we talk, feminism, politics, Christmas presents, and how to get chewing gum out of hair. Guest speakers from the forums, an "I'm a......ask me anything slot...I'd love it!

TanteRose · 20/10/2020 06:24

thanks to this thread, have just downloaded the book mentioned upthread onto my Kindle.

and I'll try and catch WH later

anotherhumanfemale · 20/10/2020 07:42

@Pluckedpencil

Women's hour should be asking itself whether it has become too politicised....while we on Mumsnet are leaving politics out of it and talking about whether this gender thing is actually justifiable, they are too busy worrying about how it plays with middle England. We are talking philosophy, science and sociology... they are talking politics.
Exactly this.
NeurotrashWarrior · 20/10/2020 07:52

I'm fucked off with that click bait title.

"Too politicised....?!"

Women, get thee back to the kitchen!

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/10/2020 07:53

The book is an analysis of why mn became political.

Because women need their own spaces to discuss political things that affect them!

Always have and sadly always will!

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/10/2020 07:56

@senua

I haven't heard the trailers etc.

Is anyone sending in pre-emptive emails?

About to send furious tweet.

Then I have to time school drop off and toddler's park scoot to listen with fury while baking stuff for the holiday that probably won't be happening.

MaMaLa321 · 20/10/2020 09:22

thanks for the heads up, the book looks interesting, from the sample I read, and I'm down for the webinar. Like others have said, it'll be interesting to see WH's take on this, and whether there will be any discussion of their pathetic coverage of trans issues. I doubt it, somehow.
I also find it interesting how GN has developed. It was started not too long ago, and I think it's been designed so that it doesn't become another MN. I believe that the Feminism board has become a thorn in the side of MN - they had probably no idea of how it would develop into one of the few online places where you could discuss trans issues and that has caused the organisation a lot of problems.
So, no Feminism board on GN, which seems incredible to me.
Unfortunately for the organisers, GN is as boring as hell, populated by a very small number of posters.
What I'm taking a long time to say, is that MN is like Frankenstein's monster, and has developed in ways that the organisers didn't envisage, and wouldn't do again if they had the chance. So, aren't we lucky that we HAVE got MN?

InflamatoryWrit · 20/10/2020 09:44

I am putting this here because the other thread where terms were being discussed was zapped last night, and it is at least vaguely related:

On BBC radio 4 this morning there was a discussion about the words veggie burger or vegan sausages as misleading descriptors. Because veggie burgers aren't burgers, and vegan sausages aren't sausages, as any fule kno. And it is right that words have meaning. Therefore we must put a stop to this or risk misleading shoppers blah blah etc etc.

Looks like the BBC can spend generous air time and exert a lot of energy standing up for sausages. The word woman though, meh.

nauticant · 20/10/2020 09:59

OK everyone, it's about to start so get ready for the singing nuns.

It looks like I've started a (mildly) controversial thread. I feel like, finally, I've arrived.

Jane Garvey's intro talking about anything BUT the politicisation of Mumsnet - 'are you a user? What do you get from it? Do you enjoy using the site' - until right at the very end when she had to mention the book. (Which does, inconveniently, mention politicisation in the title.)

I get the impression WH have the brooms at the ready to sweep any awkwardness neatly under the BBC carpet. Hoping to be proved wrong.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/10/2020 10:10

Unless JG actually said the phrase "too politicised yesterday," I think it's young twats at the bbc writing twatty things to get listeners to listen.

JG hasn't said anything other than how valuable mn has been for certain campaigns (so far.)

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/10/2020 10:12

Abs I saw that as general filler "do call dear listener" crap.

nauticant · 20/10/2020 10:14

Just before the programme started the continuity announcer trailed it by saying:

"Has Mumsnet become too politicised?"

This is what BBC Radio 4 are saying. However, once the programme started Jane Garvey trailed the item differently.

OP posts:
NeurotrashWarrior · 20/10/2020 10:16

Yes, twatty twats.

I hope that's addressed!

AbsintheFriends · 20/10/2020 10:17

Yes, Neurotrash - agree, though I wondered if this was WH trying to steer the discussion into less choppy waters. Encouraging people to email/tweet to say they found MN invaluable when researching different brands of reusable nappy or whatever.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/10/2020 10:23

I've read a good article about the book;i think it should discuss anything but nappies!

Mn helped me recognise the signs of abuse that by friend experienced and what she should do.

AbsintheFriends · 20/10/2020 10:29

Women on MN 'talk about the same sort of subjects that are on woman's hour...'

WITH ONE GLARING EXCEPTION.

Helmetbymidnight · 20/10/2020 10:31

its great so far!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 20/10/2020 10:31

She's 'one of us' :)

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/10/2020 10:31

Whoop!

Shout out to fwr by the Prof!

I take umbridge with the asssertion that there's no gatekeeping though.

Oooh JG can't say certain things on MN Jane has just said...

AbsintheFriends · 20/10/2020 10:31

Oooh - the elephant has been mentioned!

GlomOfNit · 20/10/2020 10:32

Yay, Jane G. I will miss her. I did think this might be 99% crappy clickbait trailing by some woke or provocative bugger at the Beeb.

I knew about this book, but I think I'll definitely be getting it now.
