I assume this is about the the audacity to criticise the gender identity ideology. I wonder if they'll have a proper discussion. Remember that Jenni Murray only felt free to talk only as she was walking out of the door.

I listen to R4 science and politics as much as possible but turn to R6 when WH is on.

Not for me at all

Tootletum · 19/10/2020 17:20

Well yes, if women talking about issues that affect women, it's political. Or to put it another way, has polarised politics seeped into every aspect of our lives, so that every point of view is immediately seen as left wing or right wing? Can't I just say that most things I think depend in the context? No problem with a bloke in the next cubicle, big problem with penis in my fanny uninvited?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 19/10/2020 17:25

I am looking forward to seeing what Emma Barnett will do with Women's Hour.

She seems a sensible type.

fortran · 19/10/2020 17:35

Reminds me of this.

Bloke in the next cubicle will unfortunately be a very big problem for those women who have suffered sexual assault . Female only spaces should be for females only.

Woman's Hour - or rather the BBC - has really missed a trick: probably the biggest upheaval in UK women's rights for a couple of generations and they bottled it.

If you think about it, Mumsnet is probably the first time ever that women from all walks of life, different ages, different backgrounds etc have had the opportunity to get together and talk, without worrying about what people think of them or having to put up a typical 'female' front.

This, 100%. I don't even have kids, but I come here because it's so bloody refreshing to be surrounded by women for a change.

And while I was always a feminist and FWR helps me critique and focus my feminism, it's the boards like relationships and AIBU, with so many stories of the shit some women get dealt and how low their expectations are socialised to be, that keeps my feminism burning hot.

Exactly. If you are looking for incandescent rage-- well that was me when BBC and WH!! were keeping completely silent about this gigantic issue facing women. I will not forgive the nasty misogyny required for that programming decision.

Cismyfatarsey · 19/10/2020 18:17

I have read the book this is based on and it is fascinating. The writer is very critical of the idea that women should only talk about babies. She is an academic and it is a study of the influence of the site.

There are 10 pages on Man Friday!!

THIS.

The BBC's deliberate silencing of women's voices in all this is shameful. Let alone their collaboration in feeding young children copious amounts of "born in the wrong body" woo.
I know they're not alone but I pay for them - unlike the Guardian etc that I stopped funding years ago when I saw their inbuilt bias and misogyny.

OK that does sound interesting! I've not listened to a whole Woman's Hour since my mum had it on when I was younger.

I no longer trust the BBC as a broadcaster though, after reading the continual misrepresentation of feminists (such as JKR) whilst every other day there is the steady drip drip drip to promote transition of children with no discussion of the medical realities or recognition of the often sexist and homophobic backgrounds. Ditto the many articles on "sex work", focusing on the privileged middle class few and conveniently ignoring trafficking, poverty and addiction. Not to mention the victim blaming stance they seem to take when men kill their partners.

So I'll listen but I'm not hopeful.

@AbsintheFriends

I'm hoping the fact that this topic is being discussed on Woman's Hour tomorrow may mean some of the WH production team have a quick scan of the boards today. On the off chance, here's a quick message to them:

GET OFF THE FECKING FENCE AND START FULFILLING YOUR BRIEF TO COVER CURRENT AFFAIRS FROM AN UNASHAMED AND UNAPOLOGETIC FEMALE PERSPECTIVE YOU CRAVEN COWARDS.

Thanks!

This. When will Women’s hour think about our daughters?
BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 19/10/2020 19:16

REALLY wish we had a like button...
NewlyGranny · 19/10/2020 19:41

We have to remember that the percentage of people identifying as trans at the BBC is the same as the percentage of men in the UK prison system coming forward to identify as women.

That's enough to change the balance of any institution.

Asterion · 19/10/2020 19:42

Oh noes! We have used up all our politicising allowance!!

This far and no further, ladies

BlackeyedSusan · 19/10/2020 20:41

op, its ok, we're mumsnet so can be political.

didn't notice your typo until you pointed it out.

And yes it does imply that women should not be political. especially mothers who should be all milk and cookies or something.

EvenSupposing · 19/10/2020 20:47

I don't give a shit if they spend 20 minutes saying 'that Mumsnet is made of diamonds and EvenSupposing shits gold'. They lost the right to chat about us when they buried their heads in the sand and said 'la la la la we're not listening' for four years. They can fuck off and talk about Netmums. Fuck 'em.

Pluckedpencil · 19/10/2020 21:11

Women's hour should be asking itself whether it has become too politicised....while we on Mumsnet are leaving politics out of it and talking about whether this gender thing is actually justifiable, they are too busy worrying about how it plays with middle England. We are talking philosophy, science and sociology... they are talking politics.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 19/10/2020 22:11

Am looking forward to the webinar, thank for the link.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Wankers. Coming over to MN to see how we are doing after they shat on us from a great height? Pissed on us and told us it was raining? They can FOTTFSOFAWTGTFOSM.

In short, I am unimpressed.
