The police have arrested a 38 year old man - this man on his mountain bike, cycling around Belfast looking for women to stab over 1 hour 20 minutes. why did he stab and/or punch SIX women? Victims aged 19-22 years old. he punched two women in the neck or head

arrest article: www.belfastlive.co.uk/news/belfast-news/belfast-police-probing-six-alleged-19112718

The timings and what he did:

  1. 7.51pm on the Ormeau Avenue - second woman stabbed
  1. 8.56pm on Donegall Square West. - third woman stabbed

Any guesses where he spends time online?

It'll be those foul 'incel' sites.

Sexnotgender · 16/10/2020 10:48

That’s awful, those poor women 😔

Who wants to bet the perpetrator is going to turn out to be some basement-dwelling incel who spends all his time on woman-hating forums like reddit?

If the police find women hating forums that he was on, will anything be done about them? What can the police do about women hating forums?

It definitely won't be a coincidence that a his victims were female and around the same age.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 16/10/2020 12:18

And yet I'm pretty sure NI hate crime laws still don't cover sex (do correct me if I'm wrong!), so this won't be classed as a hate crime, cos hating women is just fiiiinnnee....

littlbrowndog · 16/10/2020 12:28

Imagine just going out and a man is going around stabbing and hitting women

Why would someone do that

The hate for women

Kaiserin · 16/10/2020 12:29

Sounds like misogyny hate crime...

I know some worry about the concept of hate crime when it relates to speech (I worry about that too, it's a dangerous concept), but targetted physical violence such as this deserves to be treated as an aggravating factor when handing out sentences.

criticalthinking · 16/10/2020 12:45

I am from and live in Belfast, you're right our hate crime does not include sex. My MP actually made a reference to that in relation to this case and got a barrage of abuse online. The main thing I hear people saying about this is 'he's likely been turned down one too many times' - which just makes my head spin. We also had to predictable headlines in local papers telling women not to go out alone etc - super depressing.

First thing I thought of too, angry uncle

JKRisagryff · 16/10/2020 12:49

Grin angry incel rather!

Redannie118 · 16/10/2020 12:52

These kind of attacks seem to be getting more common. There was an almost identical incident in Manchester a few weeks ago, except the victims were all expected to be members of the LGBTQ community( all attacks took place inside the gay quarter)

but targetted physical violence such as this deserves to be treated as an aggravating factor when handing out sentences

Absolutely. It is shocking that because targeted physical violence against women is so commonplace and so acceptable that it isn't deemed necessary to make it a hate crime.

MedusasBadHairDay · 16/10/2020 13:04

Thank fuck they've caught him, but I wish I were more hopeful that it'd lead to any positive changes.

Absolutely. If he went and stabbed six black people, or 6 Muslim people or 6 trans people it would be taken into consideration. But hey ho, it’s just women so who gives a shit.
JKRisagryff · 16/10/2020 13:22

How can it not be a hate crime when it’s clear it’s been done out of rage-fuelled hatred for women. What other reason could there be to go on an indiscriminate rampage?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/10/2020 13:25

How can it not be a hate crime

Hate crimes apply against certain characteristics protected under the Equality Act, but not all of them. Women are less equal than others. It is currently not legally possible for a hate crime to be committed against a woman in the basis of her sex.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/10/2020 13:27

Hate crimes apply against certain characteristics protected under the Equality Act

I just checked the CPS guidance ( www.cps.gov.uk/crime-info/hate-crime )

"The term 'hate crime' can be used to describe a range of criminal behaviour where the perpetrator is motivated by hostility or demonstrates hostility towards the victim's disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or transgender identity."

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/10/2020 13:34

Let’s say that the perpetrator attacked transwomen instead of natal women. Transwomen are consider women in law in NI is that right? So would that be a hate crime against women but this crime wouldn’t be a hate crime against women?

caughtalightsneeze · 16/10/2020 13:37

I'm not sure how it differs from CPS guidance, but the PPS information, which would be the relevant one in N Ireland is here.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/10/2020 13:37

Depends, if they were attacked because they were trans -> hate crime. If they were attacked because the perpetrator thought they were female not hate crime.

Interesting, no "transgender identity" in NI hate crime legislation.
caughtalightsneeze · 16/10/2020 13:40

I couldn't see misogyny being made a hate crime here in N Ireland. It's practically obligatory in order to be a member of any of the political parties (particularly the DUP despite some of their most senior members being female).

caughtalightsneeze · 16/10/2020 13:42

Interesting, no "transgender identity" in NI hate crime legislation.

Yes, I noticed that it actually refers to 'transexual'.
