Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

They've done two status updates

My god these people are relentless.

LangClegTheBeardedVulture · 16/10/2020 17:06

I sent the owner some flowers and I'm planning on going down tomorrow to try out their food. Her cafe sounds lovely and I feel dreadful that this is happening to her.

PurpleHoodie · 16/10/2020 17:10

That's lovely Lang.

Indeed they are.

Her email was a 'hate crime' apparently.

Ignorant, woman hating twits. And it's pervasive. All the people who hate women, or hate their lives, or feel somehow disenfranchised, just view this as an exercise in relief and respite.

Apart from absolute cringe of evidently ignorant people telling others to educate themselves, the overt fury that women have boundaries, opinions, and any sort of power, however small, is difficult to watch.

Even on this thread, we have people who are desperate to be able to criminalise women's boundaries.

It's rather depressing, Butterer. And I don't blame you for not going there. Not one bit.

Datun · 16/10/2020 17:26

"This is the law"

🤣🤣🤣

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 16/10/2020 17:29

‘Please educate yourself’

Stupid fucking phrase

Used by stupid fucking people

PurpleHoodie · 16/10/2020 17:33

Eeeks. They haven't read, or understood the Equality Act have they?

Numpties.

Racism is also huge in their circles.

What sent me to FWR for the first time was when a FtM person who had received buckets of support from the LGBT+ group I was running wanted an exception made to rules about sharing personal political stuff to members' emails to send out what they called 'positive trans messaging' and what was actually anti women political propaganda, and when they received a 'no, because group rules' informed me I was no friend to LGBT+ people (despite group I'd run for decades and all the support to them) and I heard the 'phobic' word for the first time. Group was immediately used to send flying monkeys at me, it wrecked a community that had existed for years and supported so many before this individual turned up and trashed it via a tantrum over the word 'no'.

I came here looking to find out wtaf 'microaggressions' and 'positive messaging' was and why I'd been attacked like this, and discovered that this was by no means an isolated or unusual experience. It's depressing to read of another bewildered person being the victim of someone with serious issues around boundaries, an obsessive pursuit of anything perceived as a slight out of all proportion, and absolutely no ability to empathise or show respect for another person: merely rage that service was demanded and not provided.

As so often demonstrated by the remarkable posters on the relationships board: when you encounter someone who behaves in that way towards you, a reciprocal, positive, healthy relationship is not possible and no one has to settle for any relationship with someone who believes they are entitled to treat you in this way. Regardless of their reasons.

BasiliskStare · 16/10/2020 17:41

That twitter is horrid. I have largely until recently ignored this sort of stuff ( yup - shame on me) , but increasingly I am annoyed and doing small things to make my views known. I'll get better I hope

Cloudybean · 16/10/2020 17:49

People keep saying she's spreading hate or whatever, but she emailed an individual who chose to then share it. If it was that harmful why would you do that, other than to try and throw a tantrum because someone said no?

There is a lot of poor legal understanding going around. They seem absolutely convinced that you can't express religious beliefs if they concern a protected category under the EQ. Have they never met any, erm, traditional clerics? Homophobia, misogyny, hatred of other faiths, especially minority faiths.

Check out armchair lawyer who doesn't realise that the gofundme is not for one of Anna's employees and thinks the poster person can sue Anna to get money for their surgery.

Butterer That sounds like an absolutely vile day and experience. Flowers

Oh good lord

I am so sorry butterer

Datun · 16/10/2020 18:06

Racism is also huge in their circles.

Classism, ageism, sexism, homophobia. It's a knee-jerk reaction to go to any one of those concepts in order to insult and demean. Actual arguments don't feature.

It's good to know people like that don't last five minutes on here, though, to be honest.

Datun · 16/10/2020 18:07

Butterer - sounds like a horribly traumatic time.

@PotholeParadies what am I getting wrong about the picture. If no one has a contract (which sounds like hospitality). If they were getting holiday pay with their paid (12.07%) sounds good.

ivykaty44 · 16/10/2020 18:15

what are they going to do when they've put her business into bankruptcy - then what, shell still have the same views, more people will be scared of TV

I don't know the details of how it should work. It doesn't sound immediately wrong- it sounds how I thought zero-hours worked. Can't save up holiday pay for a holiday week when you don't have set shifts and weeks to work. Book-keepers don't normally make screw ups with bread-and-butter issues like that.

Suing a random business for your surgery costs because they sent you an email on their religious beliefs though? Definitely not how any of this works!
