Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

SapphosRock - what’cha got there? I’m intrigued by the square parcels.

PurpleHoodie · 16/10/2020 14:26

It's good news that she's hiring. It means business is going well.

The menu looks fabulous! Not Vegan, never going to be, but that menu would tempt me to eat vegan for lunch most days.

Also this:

Datun

Frantically trying to use sexual orientation to force women into complying with trans ideology when sexual orientation doesn't exist in trans ideology

Homosexuality does not exist in trans-ideology, and must be stamped out. Note that.

I've never eaten her food so of course I won't be commenting on it.

Five tweets, two facebook posts, oh the horror this business must be going through to be criticised on a twitter account with about 40 followers. Won't someone think of the bosses? And their profits!!!

MostDisputesDieAndNoOneShoots · 16/10/2020 14:33

Lost me at “spirit over-cloaking”.

Kit19 · 16/10/2020 14:34

If I lived in Brighton I’d order her food :) it looks lovely

As the crowdfunder raised more than £600 in 4 days (accompanied by derogatory comments about the café owner) after taking over a year (inc at least one special fundraising event) to get to £2200-odd, it must have been more than five tweets and two fb posts. Either that or they have magical powers of chugging and a brilliant career ahead of them in charity fundraising.

The OP even mentions that the group have been badmouthing the business inside private facebook groups.

Several people have accused the workers of furlough fraud on this thread. All I said is if that statement about workers being required to do shifts whilst furloughed is correct then it is not workers who are potentially breaking the law. I have no idea whether that statement is correct or not, I can only comment on what she wrote.[/quote]
Workers can't conduct furlough fraud as they don't run their own payroll. You have stated that the people who do run the payroll are "potentially" breaking the law. This was after the business owner had set out her own clarification on the furlough payment problems raised by staff which made it absolutely clear all laws were being followed by those whose job it is to do so. You have chosen to add additional speculation about two members of staff commiting fraud despite having all the information to the contrary.

The posh phones thing made me laugh aloud today.

Yesterday my phone died. (The battery started leaking and the phone stopped working.)

So today I went to the shop it came from and got another, complete with Bluetooth (or so it claims). It came with £10 calls credit on it, and cost me £5.

Posh. Very posh.

Incidentally, is there any way to be sure that the email address given by the agrieved ones goes to the owner of the shop, and is not just a way for someone ill-intentioned to harvest data?

Solidarity with women. All the fucking way.✊

Needmoresleep · 16/10/2020 14:37

You seem to have a problem with both women and bosses. Or is it women bosses.

Without bosses there would not be workers. My expectation is that both groups are mainly good with a few rotten apples. It would be sad to have a more negative outlook.

Haha. Without bosses of course there would still be workers. There just wouldn't be someone profiting from their labour.
SapphosRock · 16/10/2020 14:40

We had the fully loaded wraps (mock chicken with sweet potato, avocado, sushi rice and other delicious stuff) popcorn cauliflower and coconut & dark chocolate bites. Lovely lunch.

Unless they are women who feel unable to work for an employer anymore do to her bigotry and lax workplace practices in which case its lol you're fucked and can't get benefits and if you complain we'll accuse you of terrorism.
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/10/2020 14:42

How many of the workers at this café who have walked out are women? How many of the workers at this café who have stayed are women?

I feel it may be rash to assume that all the workers in either category are the same sex, and that the sex in question is exclusively either male or female.

(Especially in Brighton!)

FloralBunting · 16/10/2020 14:42

I must say the "throw up enough random shit to distract from the ill treatment of women by the self defined 'righteous'" is as transparent and convincing as ever.

I'm sure lurkers are taking note.

PurpleHoodie · 16/10/2020 14:42

I like the honesty box approach.

PurpleHoodie · 16/10/2020 14:43

They will be Floral.

FloralBunting · 16/10/2020 14:43

Apropos of nothing, I give no shits for male opinion. Just noting that for posterity, it being FWR and all.

Me too. I always look at each side's statement of events to work out which one is more plausible (as would any employment tribunal).

jj I've just remembered a time when a colleague racially abused our manager. Am I obliged to be on the worker's side there, too?

Datun · 16/10/2020 14:48

Workers can't conduct furlough fraud as they don't run their own payroll. You have stated that the people who do run the payroll are "potentially" breaking the law.

Yeah but, to be fair, jj's arguments are so transparently gabble, they consistently end up having to make imaginary appeals to fictitious authorities, as a last resort.

YouTube, for instance, and possibly mumsnet were all potentially breaking copyright law for showing Posey nail Harrop to the wall. Jj seem to be rather committed to the notion that it was only a question of time before Sky News prosecuted the lot.

Also that women drawing attention to naked photographs of a violent predator boasting about targeting women in a women's homeless shelter, were breaking laws on showing photographs of naked people. Or something.

Jj seems to thoroughly enjoy telling women that they are all in imminent danger of having their collars felt.

Kit19 · 16/10/2020 14:50

What floral said

itchyfinger · 16/10/2020 14:50

I lived in brighton for a while and always got happy maki sushi rolls on deliveroo when I was feeling lazy but didn't want a greasy takeaway. I saw on the Vegan Brighton group that they were campaigning to boycott her because of this and that all the staff had left (good luck to them getting a new job in these times). I couldn't believe how many people on the group were agreeing to boycott her, absolutely awful. All for not donating to a cause she didn't believe in!

Escapeplanning · 16/10/2020 14:52

Unfortunately this shit opinion here is very visible to all. Smearing identifiable people in jobs with professional financial responsibility is nasty. If this unfounded maligning is going on here you can guarantee that the same and worse is being said about them elsewhere.

Winesalot · 16/10/2020 14:52

I'm sure lurkers are taking note.

I would not be surprised that many lurkers will be seeing the singular determination to accuse a woman who has been upfront about her religious beliefs of deceit, fraud and harassment of her staff.

And the single minded support of a group of ex-employees that seem to be more concerned with getting their friend's double mastectomy surgery funded.

What has also started to happen, is that the group's twitter account is now receiving quite a bit of attention to people calling them out for their behaviour.
