Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

Sorry Rufus...

Kantastic · 15/10/2020 22:39

Thanks Rufus! I still get really mad thinking about it. I give off vibes that scare men in my normal life (or so I'm told) but it turned out my corporate personality that I toned down the scariness for wasn't able to handle the situation, so I went into a freeze state. I hate how female socialisation can be weaponised against us.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with that too, things like that are so awful when you're a teenager.

Winesalot · 15/10/2020 22:40

Well forgive me if that was insensistive but I presumed since people were so quick to believe the bosses version of events over 10 of their workers than I assumed few had been in the position of the workers and perhaps didn't realise bosses routinely lie about workplace disputes.

Seriously, fucking tone deaf!

Also, how many of us have actually been given the line ‘we don’t employ young women because they go off and have families’.... oh yes, and we don’t bother reporting them because they will just deny it. Although when I was sacked while pregnant they did it in such a way that it was about ‘cultural fit’ and was told by lawyers it would be too hard to prosecute. And this was just 10 years ago. It seems nothing has changed from reading these boards.

So, tone deaf in the extreme to tell women on a feminist board about employment laws being ignored or bosses lying. Or women not having to fucking put up with listening to misogynists in the workplace. Or feeling fucking powerless.

But obviously it doesn’t matter, because we are women!!!!

persistentwoman · 15/10/2020 22:40

@littlbrowndog

Bullies love to bully.

They always love a gang to bully with.

And if they can find a woman to bully.... - even better...
RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/10/2020 22:40

Murdoch does not own the Daily Mail...

jj1968 · 15/10/2020 22:42

@Butterer

Well thats the position isn;t it. No-one seems to be even considering the possibility that the bosses version of events might not be true. Instead it's the workers who are liars, terrorists and extorters for err, leaving their jobs and organising a letter writing campaign against their former employers.

Murdoch famously backed the bosses and accused workers of being lying abusive militants in pretty every strike his papers ever covered. I know how popular his flagship paper is on here so assumed it must have rubbed off.

I don't think we've seen pictures or bios of this lot but if they're flouncing out of their jobs over a fundraising poster for a cosmetic mastectomy, then they're not working class by any meaningful definition of the word. Culturally or economically. But sure, let's all pretend that jj's standing in solidarity with the working classes instead of ganging up with a bunch of bullies because they're attacking a woman and he's into that.

jj1968 · 15/10/2020 22:43

@Winesalot

So why are you automatically believing the bosses version of events in this dispute?

It was a bit embarrassing

Then one of the lads thought it was a good idea to tell my boyfriend

And then they nearly had a fight

And then I completely lost my shit at both of them and frightened them into stopping, I basically yelled

YOU....BACK IN YOUR OFFICE

YOU.....BACK IN YOUR CAR

And then i went and trembled behind a display for a bit

But no...not nice and mine isn’t anything to speak of really, amazing what we downplay

PhoebeSnow · 15/10/2020 22:44

jj1968 grow up hth!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/10/2020 22:45

Thank you persistantwoman

Quaagars · 15/10/2020 22:45

OK, will reword (sorry for the clumsily worded explanation!)
It markets itself as an LGBT friendly cage, regularly fundraises for LGBT causes.
Doesn't mean it's exclusively for LGBT people, it's open and welcoming fit everyone, just your usual cafe.
Just markets itself as an LGBT "safe" space so to speak and raises money regularly for LGBT charities.
Anyone can go in though, it's a cafe for everyone!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/10/2020 22:46

@Butterer

That's it. Cuppa calls.
Enjoy Brew

Im thinking of a short...but its getting late

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/10/2020 22:46

Fuck me quaggers

They aren't just flouncing over the letter are they. They have several other serious grievences which you dismiss cos their boss said they weren;t true.

I'm sorry thats such a shitty attitude, you have no idea what it was like working there, she's clearly somewhat eccentric to say the least. 10 people don't give up their incomes in the middle of a pandemic for nothing and if they aren't working class then why are they working in a cafe on zero hour contracts?

Quaagars · 15/10/2020 22:48

@PotholeParadies

It's a vegan café. If a trans person asks to put a 'Legalise Fox Hunting' poster up, do you think that'll be transphobia too?
OK, genuinely lost now. What are you actually talking about Confused Grin

Bad women. More wrongthink.
Honestly jj - why are you spending so much time on here? It can't be any good for your blood pressure having to confront so many intelligent, articulate women with backgrounds in law, politics, medicine, education, safeguarding and the rest?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/10/2020 22:49

Oh bless you

OldCrone · 15/10/2020 22:49

Do you know any of the people involved jj?

littlbrowndog · 15/10/2020 22:50

Haha rufus.

Wish I had booze in.

In Scotland you can’t drink anywhere else. But at home

I call that bullying by Nicola

SapphosRock · 15/10/2020 22:50
