Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

Well. If she is biphobic for believing in one soulmate then she probably could be said to be divorcephobic and phobic about anyone remarrying after losing their soulmate etc.

@Kantastic

I guess not many of you have any experiences of putting up with the rants of an offensive bigoted boss

Jesus H Christ. I'm bisexual and even if my boss had said word for word what the spoilt brats claimed (which I do not believe for a second) I wouldn't give a flying far. Some of us have experienced actual PROBLEMS. And I would say almost anyone who's ever had a job has experienced worse from their boss than chat of a kooky belief system.

When I worked in telesales, a long time ago, we had a delightful manager who in his morning motivational team talk would regale up with his wonderful insights often into women's lives. He had a particularly bugbear about women not wearing make up, he didn't expect anyone to you understand, there was no dress code, but he couldn't fathom who a woman wouldn't want to make herself look attractive and feminine.

We talked a lot about what to do about it as a team. People got sacked for very little in those kinds of jobs and no-one was in a position to risk that. Eventually someone did make a complaint about him. She was told to drop the complaint, resign or be dismissed, a bit like happened to these workers. She left.

Anyway we all put in a joint complaint after that, she got legal, and eventually she got reinstated in a different office and he 'resigned'.

Great to know the feminism chat board would have been on his side. Top work.

Hey, jj. Suppose it was your shop window and I asked you to put a

I ❤ JK Rowling

poster in it?

Suppose you said no, and I asked you why, and then, on the basis of your answer, tried to get your business destroyed for misogyny, homophobia and anti-Scottish sentiment?

Still okay with that?

EvenSupposing · 15/10/2020 21:48

@Kantastic

Missing t up there which I feel the need to replace. I wouldn't give a flying fart.
Don't worry. If you leave the T out someone will turn up to remind you very very quickly...

@HartnellAvenue

This. This right here is why MN is accused of being transphobic. You brush off her absolute batshit crazy cultish "religion" which was only started in 2007 by saying "it's a bit out there" and you think that her acting directly discriminating on the grounds of someone's gender identity is OK. Because its a transman who wanted to put the poster up in a cafe window in the most LGBTQ friendly city in Britain asking for support from random people for top surgery.

The cafe owner didn't say "no because I don't allow posters". Unbelievable the things some posters here will shrug off. Oh and when I was on twitter I would have been called a terf so I don't subscribe to the TWAW mantra and I do believe in sex based rights... but you and she are in the wrong here.

Really? If this is not extortion, I don’t know what is!Hmm Have people lost their minds?
jj1968 · 15/10/2020 21:52

@PotholeParadies

I would say no and leave it at that. I wouldn't launch into a diatribe because presumably they would be a customer/potential customer and that would be unprofessional and unnecessary.

And this is clearly more than about just the letter.

Did you ask him to put up a poster urging women to stop wearing make-up?
Did you ask him for his views on why he like make-up on women?
Did you organise a meeting to inquire about his views?

If the answer to these questions is no, then it is a terrible analogy and it's literally comparing apples and pears. Or possibly apples and the Eiffel Tower.

Now give over with the faux workers' rights shtick. You only give a fuck about trans shit. You know it. We know it.

What utter, utter, stupidity. Of course no one here would have been on his side. Other than all the posters who come in here getting rage-ons every time a woman says no to anyone, they'd have found a reason to blame her for making the complaint very quickly if that scenario was posted here. How can you be so dense that you dont see the differences between the scenario that you just outlined and the scenario this thread is about? Fucking hell.

EvenSupposing · 15/10/2020 21:54

Diatribe?

Is that like a rant?

Like when a woman has the temerity to disagree?

Fatarseflanagan09 · 15/10/2020 21:57

How come these rancid twats keep getting away with this shit, surely its extortion and hate crime, have real women any rights at all?

Quaagars · 15/10/2020 22:02

Just read that statement linked.
Why did she need to go into all that?
Why not just say no thank you, and that you already give to charity or whatever, just like people usually do when approached by people charity collecting?
You don't usually go into a spiel about why you think they're wrong and don't believe in their charity!

I guess not many of you have any experiences of putting up with the rants of an offensive bigoted boss and not feeling like you can say anything because you might get sacked.

Since most of the posters on here are women, I'd be surprised if most of us hadn't had that sort of experience.

Quaagars · 15/10/2020 22:06

The owner has also theorized that bisexuality only exists as a result of unresolved trauma

Yeah, she's entitled to her beliefs, but someone wanting their charity supporting surely doesn't need all that - why not just a thanks but no thanks?

Because they wanted to know why and she was honest with them

I dont think people like honesty

I mean they say they do...but then someone is honest (and polite) and all hell breaks loose!

This is what happens if you stereotype and despise women (on here and in general).
jj1968 · 15/10/2020 22:08

@Kantastic

How is it different? Was his misgoyny wrong, but bisexual workers should just put up with listening to that kind of crap? Given her cult appears to support theosophy if she'd started banging on about root races and the aryan age of aquarious would that be fine too? It's just her religion? People should not have to put up with offensive views based on their sexuality in the workplace end of. If people have religious beliefs then they are entitled to them but on this subject they should keep them to themselves. And when it comes from a boss it's even worse.

Quaagars · 15/10/2020 22:08

Cross posted with butterer
OK, fair enough but still, come on, as I said, entitled to beliefs but if those beliefs are bigoted ones people aren't always going to agree with you.
