BBC making a documentary about savile

One of the many tweets about this:
Because everyone ignored the mainly middle aged women (eg the ward matrons) who kept saying he was dodgy.
There's a lesson here - listen to women who are raising safeguarding concerns.

What an absolutely excellent point

If the BBC want a documentary to be made about this, they should commission an independent production company to make it, tell them they're welcome to focus on any/all aspects including the way the BBC covered up for Savile, fully fund it without exercising any control or influence, and commit to broadcasting it whatever it says without any quibble.

Hear hear

The "only the women" comment has stuck with me over the years.

StealthPolarBear · 14/10/2020 22:21

Yes really good points.

They should start by releasing all the relevant facts before making dramas.

They have never really explained why they kept promoting him, giving him more air time and more prominent shows when there were so many rumours about him.

StealthPolarBear · 14/10/2020 22:24

I also would like them and others to acknowledge what the middle aged women are banging on about right now. Start planning the documentary for some time in the 2030s

They're really goung to do this?

I find it massively inappropriate of the BBC to even consider making this considering the part they played, I'm cynical about their motives.

HowFastIsTooFast · 14/10/2020 22:28

I'm absolutely staggered that it's the BBC who are making this. The same BBC whose bigwigs and stars covered up for him, and in whose studios he felt up young girls. I'm astounded that they've got the bloody nerve!

Onedropbeat · 14/10/2020 22:30

The bbc were the people who stopped Jonny rotten from speaking out about what he knew about saville

He tried to get it out there and was shut down

It’s all about making money. They don’t give a shit about the children, they just want viewers.

What was the comment? Made by who?
Thelnebriati · 14/10/2020 22:34

I can't wait to see the BBC's expose of the individuals within the BBC who covered up for Saville.

They're making a documentary, not a drama.

I would be very interested to see how they address their own accountability.
He was known around Leeds as a predator when I was a teenager in the 90s.

In-fucking-deed.
Mischance · 14/10/2020 22:35

I am very disturbed that this programme is to be made. It is not in the least "entertaining" and is not in the public interest - so why?

A friend of mine was a patient at Stoke Mandeville when JS appeared on a visit. She was asked if she would like to meet him, and the nurses advised her not to, because they saw his behaviour as inappropriate. They knew, but no-one listened.

StealthPolarBear · 14/10/2020 22:37

The BBC say they won't sensationalise his crimes.
So that's OK then.

BBC to make drama about Jimmy Savile's life

NervousInYorkshire · 14/10/2020 22:41

Apologies- I was going by what I read on the thread.

That it's a fucking drama miniseries is a whole different thing and my dander is now up. Thanks for the link.

HowFastIsTooFast · 14/10/2020 22:42

@NervousInYorkshire My Nan used to go to the discos in Leeds in the 50s when he was a DJ, and even back then the girls all knew not to go near him and never, ever to be left alone with him.

StealthPolarBear · 14/10/2020 22:43

Sorry that was my fault.
Doesn't drama suggest it won't necessarily be factual?

AnyFucker · 14/10/2020 22:44

The fucking hypocrites

zanahoria · 14/10/2020 22:46

The narrative that annoys me is when the media say he groomed the nation, I think some police chief said it first. It is not true and simply an excuse for police incompetence. Most people thought he was a bit creepy and plenty had heard stories about him. He only ever groomed his victims and those in power - mainly the media and the police but also politicians and royalty.

zanahoria · 14/10/2020 22:55

it was the commander of the Met who said he groomed the nation, on the release of a report.

MollyButton · 14/10/2020 22:57

IT could be good if its as good as the Shipman one - although that did back slightly off from saying no one looked at the death because they were elderly women on the whole.

Catiopea · 14/10/2020 23:05

Isn’t this all about the ‘drama’ of ‘nobody knew’ when it should be the fucking outrage that plenty of women people knew and nobody men gave a fuck until it gave them ‘woke points’ to?
